Product Review: Gelaskins for iPhone 4

Share:

Phew! iPhone 4 is finally here in Canada. To those of you who braved the lines, the past Friday, and got your iPhone 4, congratulations! I happened to be one of the lucky ones. I was first in line, where I went to purchase mine. They only had 2 32GB models in stock there, and I got one.

Something most people do when they get a new phone, is put it in a case or of skin right away. One of my favourite skins is Gelaskins, and they have a full line up of iPhone 4 skins, in many different designs, from many different artists. They install easy, and uninstall even easier, leaving no sticky residue, or any sign that they were there at all.

GelaSkins are removable covers for protecting and customizing your portable devices. They feature stunning, photo-quality graphics ranging from fine art prints to contemporary urban images designed by our growing family of artists from around the globe. Stand out in the crowd with personalized protection from GelaSkins.

They sent us a couple of Gelaskins to look at, and I decided to install the”Ink Pond” design, by Nananmi Cowdroy. This artist does some very cool black and white and pen & ink designs, and Gelaskins features a few more from this artist.

Installation is super easy, as it is basically a series of stickers that you just need to put in the right place. The back goes on great, and perfectly lines up with camera and flash. You just line up the edges, and smooth it out. It’s a good idea to wipe down the suface of the device, before installing, to avoid little bumps in the finished install.

It also comes with strips to cover the sides of the stainless steel antenna. This should help to negate the attenuation issue that has been widely reported, and adds a little touch of extra style. One downside, for some people, is that it completely covers the microSIM tray. If you plan on switching SIM cards, for some reason, you’ll have to peel back the skin on that side.

The Gelaskins also includes pieces for the front. It doesn’t include clear protections, for the touch screen, itself, but brings the style of the back skin, to the front.

For that finishing touch, you can download a wallpaper to match your skin, right from Gelaskins. Just search for your design and device, then click “Download Wallpaper”. Gelaskins is a great way to customize your iPhone 4. Check out all the designs, as I’m sure there’s one that will suit you. If you’ve browsed every image, and nothing is appealing, just create you own skin, by uploading your own images.

Gelaskins are just $14.95 for the iPhone 4. One of the more affordable ways to protect you new device. They are available at some retail outlets like London Drugs, but if you want to get the best selection, or customize your own, you have to order online, at www.Gelaskins.com.

  • Gonna have to check this one out, thanks bro

I don't get the “skins”. They don't provide your phone with any protection, just make it look cool. I prefer to buy a bumper case or something harder that actually covers the corners if it were to fall.

Skins/shields usually provide users with a more grippy surface to help prevent the device from slipping out of your hand. They also prevent scratches from things like putting your phone in your pocket with keys, in a purse/bag. The key is that they add this for next to no gain in the bulkiness/shape of the device.

I don't like them at all. I got one and gradually it lost it stick and bits got stuck to it and the phone looked terrible. Will give these a miss.

Yup love the GelaSkins and that they are Canadian too! Just ordered a custom skin which should arrive next week 😀

Actually skins do an excellent job in protecting my iPhone 3G, its fallen out of my shirt pocket numerous times, about a 1m fall onto carpet, cement, hardwood… never had an issue. The one time the skin got damaged was when my son dropped in into a box of Lego, punctured the skin, got a free replacement skin – iPhone still doesn't have a scratch on it.

Haha you said “bro”. Are you from jersey shore too bro?

Gary, which one do you recommend more? I understand you are on zagg's payroll.. But I am looking at getting something to negate the antenna issue that happens quite frequently on my Rogers phone in Toronto.

How are you going to turn down a guy who looks like Rambo with his shirt off, bro?

I have one on my ipod touch…not a fan. It doesn't seem to cover everything (but maybe that's just the ipod). I eventually went and bought a full body case from apple. I have much more confidence in the full cases. I have a Belkin on my iphone 4 and people can't even tell there is a case…though I also ordered the free one from apple : ) gotta have options!

  • BM

Sorry, but I just don't buy it. This is a piece of plastic that sticks to the outer shell of the phone. Yes it does protect against keys in your pocket, or a slight scratch, should it fall on the floor. I just don't see how it can protect against a hard fall like a full on hard case (like case-mate sells). The corners of the phone are still exposed and nothing absorbs the impact! To each his own I guess, but I'll stick with my case-mate.

These are TOO COOL! Just ordered mine.

  • Holly

Which Belkin did you get and where did you find it? (Or order it from.)

  • Sinison

Really I have had them on all my iDevices/laptops for years, never seen any of things you describe.. especially never seen any residue.. after years of being stuck to laptops and ipods..

Dude, in 28 sentences, you used 40, commas. That's, way too many, and really distracting, when trying to read, your article. Trying using, them only when you, would naturally make a, break or pause, in the sentence if, you were speaking, it aloud.

  • amoemabutt

haha, that was the, BIGGEST, thing that I noticed, when reading this article. Way, way, too, many, commas.

  • 1234

It's “Try to use” not “Trying using”.

  • Queen

this is not a grammar test lmao why do u all care so much how he types ? dont like it? … dont read it. keep your blunt, ignorant comments to yourselves. No one cares. lol
