Apple announced today that it has reached another important milestone: iOS users have spent more than $10 billion in the App Store last year, including $1 billion in December alone. Developers have earned $15 billion on the App Store to date.

The press release highlights that the last month of 2013 was the most successful in App Store history, as customers downloaded nearly 3 billion apps.

“We’d like to thank our customers for making 2013 the best year ever for the App Store,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services. “The lineup of apps for the holiday season was astonishing and we look forward to seeing what developers create in 2014.”

Apple introduced iOS 7 last year, the biggest change since the original iPhone, which surprised the tech world with its redesigned user interface. Also, it heavily contributed to the App Store’s success because developers could take advantage of the more than 200 new features and APIs, so developers such as Evernote, Yahoo!, AirBnB, Pinterest, and others could re-imagine the user experience, and increased the efficiency of their applications.

The App Store is available in 155 countries across the globe and features more than 500,000 native iPad apps.
