Fido Releases New $50 Unlimited Plan, iPhone Not Eligible?!

To remain “competitive” and combat recent offers from WIND Mobile and Mobilicity, this morning Fido released a bombshell $50 Unlimited Minutes Plan. The new plan is a promotion and expires on December 31, 2010 and for some reason is NOT available for smartphones (AKA: iPhone)!

$50 Unlimited Plan

This new plan from Fido is available on a 3-year contract for non-smartphones. I find the smartphone restriction to be extremely silly and I hope Fido’s call centers get bombarded with calls (maybe so much that they will allow smartphones).

Note that other iPhone-related sites are indicating that this plan is iPhone-friendly which it definitely is not, at least from Fido’s perspective.

For reference, the plan is detailed below:

  • Price: $50.00/month
  • Minutes: Unlimited
  • Evenings/Weekends: Unlimited
  • Features: Unlimited Incoming Calls and Unlimited Canada/International Text Messaging (CDN to CDN, CDN to USA, CDN to International)

This is an amazing plan from Fido and brings back memories of the old CityFido Unlimited plans that started at $40, $45, and $50/month.

Do note however that there is no free Caller Display, or any other features, and that smartphone restriction (there has to be a way around that).

So if you’re looking to get Fido service on a non-smartphone, this is the only plan to offer unlimited minutes from a major Canadian wireless carrier. For iPhone users, call in and give Fido a lecture!

Some quick notes:

  • Eligible to non-smartphones devices only (mobile browsing devices). Customers will not be able to activate on this plan with a smartphone, Blackberry or iPhone.
  • Customers will not be able to add data add-ons for smartphones.
  • Available nationally in all regions.
  • New and existing customers.
  • Available on monthly, 2, and 3 year terms.
  • Offer expires on December 31, 2010.

  • Let the tricking of customer service reps into putting a data plan on the same account as this begin!

This plan has been available to fido customers for 2 months through retentions.
And available to iphone customers too.

  • Awood

    Fido – more like Fidud.

I still have the original $70 unlimited plan that includes 800 North American long distance minutes. And yes – it works just fine on my iPhone. Makes you wonder what Fido is playing at here with their idea of a “non-smartphone” plan.

  • Wow fido just told me that they won’t let me have this plan on my iphone!!! do you have it on yours?

  • Malextilley

I was offered this plan through retentions when I threatened to leave for chatter. you have to threaten to
cancel your contract with fido. they will give it to you.

  • JfromK

Could you not just get this plan with a free crappy phone, then add a data plan to it, even the cheapest flip phones are data capable, email or WAP browsing or something… Then throw the SIM card into your unlocked iPhone? Well I guess you’d have to trick a Rogers kiosk employee into punching out the SIM to Micro SIM size first.

  • Athibault

These are all bullshits , i know people working there and i pay less for unlimited local time ON IPHONE
You just have to tell them you know they offered it to some people and they will bend to your demands..

  • Awood

true and true. i STILL say it’s SAAAAD that you actually have to go that far. that it’s up to the consumer to threaten to leave Fido or to waste your own time calling/waiting/talking/begging for plans that IN THEORY they should just offer you hassle-free anyway.

  • Wuju

Would love to know if you and anyone can have this on an existing iphone plan and what is the trick. Thanks.

  • Wuju

Please help us and provide the tips on how to do it cause I would like to change it to that too.

  • dave

Why offer it on the iPhone…Wind, mobilicity and other low cost brands don’t have the iPhone, if you want an iPhone, well then thats the unfortunate price you have to pay to have. Tough Shit.

If you’re an existing customer and can’t find the ability to call customer service and get yourself that plan, well then tough shit to you as well. You signed up for the contract you have, no one forced you into it.

  • looks like Fido is shining light on Androids by shunning iPhone?

  • Nice trolling attempt, but Android sits in the smartphone camp too, ya know.

  • Yep, got it for my wife with a $10/Month credit and free CID/VM thrown in too. No contract, either.

It’s all in how you play the retention game. 😉

  • trolling? just expressing my opinion lol
im pretty known in these forums, not one for causing trouble lol

  • Ex

    We see no trolling here.

  • Tarek

I pay $35 for unlimited voice, 2500 text, free caller ID/voicemail on iphone.
I was paying $55 for the same plan minus the text msgs!!! Threaten to leave and they will sweeten the deal.

  • This is not the same plan. The retention plan includes long distance and has no data restrictions. Read more closely.

  • It is NOT the same as the $50 retention plan. Those people claiming they “already have this plan on a smartphone with data” don’t understand what they’re talking about. The retention unlimited offer is a totally different plan which even includes CAN/US long distance.

  • Ryanvgta

Rogers is offering $50 unlimited north america and unlimited text messages when you call the retention line.

  • I pay $35 for unlimited local calls as well. This is a true retention plan that trumps the old $45 plan.

  • Gerry18

That’s the strategy if you want to score a good “reasonable” plan to pay each month

  • Malextilley

Oh ya, this new offer is more like the $35.00 retentions offer. Just have to add texting I think. My point is Better plans than this are available to iphone users, through retentions.

  • Piranha

Already have this plan for past 8 months on my iPhone plan but had to make data pkg separate from cell plan to make it work out. Don’t ask why, it’s Rogers/Fido.. typical. 80bucks all-in! Not too bad. Had retentions throw in 1000 L.dist but would not bend on message pkg or discount 6gb data

  • intrrnet

Fido has changed the plan to $50 unlimited North America. All calls to North American numbers are included.

    This plan is expired.
