Updated Rogers Data Plans Coming March 18th

For all you users on Rogers and you want a data plan for your iPhone, it’s going to cost ya. Even though Rogers recently came out with an “unlimited mobile browsing” plan for $7, it does not apply to non-Rogers cellphones!

If you are using a data plan with Rogers, it can get VERY expensive. Take a look at the following example posted by a reader of iPhone in Canada:

  • Just got off the phone with Rogers “Customer Service”. I traveled to Germany and used my iPhone for just two days. Rogers charged me for 22 MB on these two days $1148. In my opinion this is ridiculous! If I wouldn’t have stopped using my Rogers phone after two days and used it for the rest of my stay (14 days) my phone bill would be $8036… just for data usage. At Rogers they think this is a valid price. I am recommending everybody with a similar experience to call Customer Service and be tough! Don’t speak to normal call center staff. Ask for a supervisor. I got a 50% discount on the data bill. That’s still more than $25 per megabyte. Compared to the $3 per megabyte for over plan usage a total rip-off. If I would treat my customers that way… I would be bankrupt within no time.

Yes, that’s right…roaming overseas with Rogers and using your data can be costly! The above works out to $52.18/megabyte! That is just absolute craziness! I was shocked when I read this, but not surprised. iPhone users in Canada are longing for a change in pricing plans…which looks like it could be coming on March 18th according to O_ssie from HowardForums. He posted the following information yesterday:

Effective March 18th 2008 (Preliminary updates:
————————-
Unlim WAP = $7
Unlim Vision WAP = $7 – 3 yr term with DECF (Data Early Cancellation Fee)

Non-Rogers & WM Data & Tethering – 3 yr term with DECF
$15 – 20MB ~ Tier 1
$30 – 20MB to 60MB ~ Tier 2
$50 – 60MB to 500MB ~ Tier 3
$65 – 500MB to 1GB ~ Tier 4
$75 – 1GB to 2GB ~ Tier 5
$85 – 2GB to 3GB ~ Tier 6
$100 – 3GB to 5GB ~ Tier 7
$0.03 per additional MB
*Note: Everyone starts off at the $15 plan and based on usage, you move up the tiers

ALL OLD PLANS GRANDFATHERED – ALL PLANS WILL NOT CONFLICT WITH $20 COMM PACK

So there you have it…the last time O_ssie posted about upcoming changes to data plans, he was correct. So right now we’re assuming that hopefully this post will also come true! By all means, these prices are not great at all–but they are a start in the right direction. I’m still dreaming of a $15 unlimited data plan, like all you lucky Telus users out there. Could you imagine having that on your iPhone? Now that would be incredible!

What data plan are you guys using on your iPhones?

I’ve also been searching the forums and your is the first report I have read where someone actually subscribed to the value pack and looked at what data charges really came through. Has anyone else reading this had success?

The new ZiPhone unlocking utility also allows you to change your phone’s IMEI so Rogers might think you were using a RAZR, which might help in getting around the restriction.

My brother is lives in Brazil. For 25 CAN (Tax included) he has unlimited 3G data access. Wirless communication in Canada is a bad joke. I left Rogers years ago and I don’t regret. It would usually take at least 40 minutes ANY DAY to get to a Customer Care associate and besides its services are VERY expensive.

Rogers sucks big time. Worse company I ever had to deal with.

Well I guess Rogers is SLIGHTLY moving in the right direction, but lumping 60MB – 500MB in the same group when the previous tier was 20MB – 60MB!! Give me a break!! Most everyone will be in the 60 – 500 group and end up paying $50. They need to make more realistic tiers, such as $20 for 100MB, $35 for 200MB, $30 for 300MB, etc…

I say that the Data plans just suck in Canada and until there is an unlimited data plan…. I will NOT use Edge :P Wifi seems to be doing the job and no need to pay extra when my Rogers bill is expensive enough! LOL

LOL! I Agree.. Data plans are completely unrealistic in Canada.. There is not one network that has figured out we are not all billionaires here in Canada… I went to the Rogers store today to ask about activating my iPhone with them.. The employee told me that I MUST get a data plan in order to use my iPhone. He said that if I only get a voice plan (which is exactly what I intended to do before I got there) I will be charged for data when I am not in a wifi area.. I am on Sasktel right now and my contract runs out in may, but my Samsung phone hooked up with Sasktel is now broken.. BTW I do not have my iPhone on Sasktel, as that is currently impossible. I have been using my iPhone for everything except the phone, but I would really like to get my iPhone working on Rogers. I do not need to access the internet all the time, and I have been perfectly happy with using it just on wifi. I am a student and I do not want a data plan at all. So, is it possible to activate my iPhone on Rogers and just have a voice plan.. and if so, what are the consequences of doing so.. if any?

Just get a free phone from them and put the sim card in your iPhone and it’ll work. or if you know someone that has an old gsm phone on rogers take it in there and they can set you up with an account using the old phone. Once that is working swap the sim in your phone for the rogers sim and you’re off.

Getting the sim card is not a problem for me.. I am just wondering what the consequences of not having a data plan are… According to the Rogers employee, not having a data plan would mean I would have data charges up to 2000$ every month as a result of the iPhone constantly accessing internet. He says the only way to avoid that would be to buy the most expensive data plan, or only turn my iPhone on in wifi areas.. This seems quite bizarre.. is it true?

That’s not true. The iphone won’t even connect to EDGE unless you put in the server information. And you can request to Rogers to get EDGE completely disabled. It took three months to get them to finally do it, but it is possible. now i just get annoying errors all the time that it can’t connect to edge, better than the annoying $300 bills though.

    Hello,

I have been following the rogers situation with their data plans too and I have added the 20 $ communication value pack to try it. I have sent one email and surfed on one page with Safari for a total of 36 KB. I’ll wait for my invoice next week before doing anything else, because a Data representative told me that I will be charge 0,05$ if I use a non-Rogers device.

My oncle has an iPhone and he added the 20$ communication value pack the first week of February. The representative told him that the value pack can be use with the iPhone. He has received his invoice today and Rogers did not charge for the 23 MB used with the iPhone.

But if Rogers mentions on their site that the “unlimited web browsing” works only for Rogers device, I am not sure if I would challenge them until they realize their mistake and charge 10000 $ for 200 MB of download….

I’ll keep you inform next week.

Cool info. I was thinking of calling Rogers and just disable my Edge as I’m never going to use it but I guess since I haven’t filled in any server info and in services I have Edge turned off and so on, I should be fine :)

    No thats not true.

All you need to do is go into Settings > General > Network > EDGE on iPhone and remove the Rogers connection information and iPhone will not connect to the EDGE network ever. You simply will not have data access outside WiFi areas. This way you only need to get a voice plan, which is exactly what I do. (I added the 2500 text message plan though since i find myself using a huge number of them since its so easy with iPhone)

do you think it is worth the risk of getting the unlimited data and using it my edge is disabled at this point but i see that you seem to have gotten the best of rogers way to go!!! please keep posting the charges or no charges when you get your next bill.

Has anyone else had experience with rogers, and if so what bundle did you go with?

The trick a rogers tech taught me was to uncheck the “remember password” option in the server settings. This way every time it tries to connect to the server you know because it asks for your password.

Now I dont have an iphone (yet) so I’m not sure if this is an option in there, but this trick has saved me a ton of cash on my HTC tytn. Its trying to connect about every hour to some server.
Rogers needs to be straightend out asap.

These new plans are apparently going into effect tomorrow, however I’ve called twice and they have no idea what I’m talking about. But thats no big surprise.

    Word to you and yours.

Well it’s the 18th and I’m searching everywhere on the Rogers website for these new data rates, but I can’t find them. Anybody else find anything? I was also in a Rogers store on the 16th, and they had no idea about any changes taking place, but like MOpie said, that’s no surprise! :)

Just got off the phone with Rogers about their data plans and it looks like there may be an option for iPhone users right now. We cannot have (nor do we want) the $7/mo unlimited data plan because we do not have certified phones and the data is text only, not html and no e-mail. HOWEVER, he suggested the “Windows Mobile” plan which is does NOT need an approved Rogers device, so he said my iPhone would work with it for unrestricted data and e-mail. Right now they have a deal that for $15/mo you get unlimited data/e-mail for 90 days, then you have a choice of a 2mb – $15/mo, 4mb – $25/mo, 8mb – $40/mo, 30mb – $60/mo or 500mb -$80/mo plan.

I am changing to this for march 21 to get the unlimited access for 90 days. It is likely they will extend the promotion of get better pricing by then anyhow.

We will keep your 10 mb plan for now but if needed we can get more access for a limited price.

He knew I was talking on a non-certified device but he didn’t know what it was until I told him.

P.S. He doesn’t know when the iPhone is officially coming to Canada.

Hi I have found your site very interesting I bought an iphone internationally the other day and put my sim card in it. It works and I have been trying to set up safari and email phoned rogers and set up the unlimited browsing. Also set up edge with the passwords they gave me. I told them it was an iphone. Haven’t connected yet via rogers and having trouble setting up to my wireless network at home. Even though it sees it and connects still can’t browse. On the way home it connected to Wi-Fi at the hotel. Friends in latin americas have the iphone and love it without the hassles Really want to use it in Canada to the ful capability What do you suggest?
