Telus: Data Plans No Longer Required For Discount iPhone Pricing

Also this week, aside from the 6GB and other new data plans, Telus made a phenomenal industry-changing update.

The big news is that with Telus, data plans are no longer a requirement to get promotional pricing on various Telus devices, including the iPhone. For example, instead of having to get a $50 combined voice and data plan, you could now get JUST a $50 voice plan and still quality for promotional pricing for an iPhone ($159/$269).

The point is, as long as the plan and add-ons total at least $50/month, data plan included or not, the customer receives promotional pricing! So you could have a $30 voice plan, $15 for Caller ID and unlimited text messages and $5 for monthly long distance for a grand total of $50/month and receive the full iPhone discount.

Also, keep in mind the following requirements:

  • Once promotional pricing is received, the customer must keep their plan at least $50/month for the entire 3-year term or pay additional fees. If the total plan drops below $50, customers are charged half of their device balance, which could amount to a few hundred dollars.
  • Not all add-ons qualify to create promotional pricing as part of the at least $50/month service fee. Those ineligible add-ons include auto-expiry features, 911 fees, paper bill fees, various administrative fees, pay per use charges, late fees and taxes.

That’s stupid, why buy an iPhone without data… That defeats the entire purpose of having an iPhone. Buy an iPod touch and a regular phone, stupid posers, making no use of their devices.

It’s stupid alright! And sorry Romi, some people don’t need data because they’re near wifi damn near all the time, like my wife!  I have data for my phone but I got a killer retention plan that keeps my bill at $51/mth TAXES IN! My wife  can’t justify having another $50/mth cell bill for our household, but would love an iPhone with just voice.  Yeah, yeah, I know, buy it unlocked at full price and there ya go. Sorry no dice. $50 voice plan??  And caller ID and voicemail as a $15 add on? I have refused to pay extra for those add on for the last 10 years. You even hint of leaving your carrier, it’s the first things that get thrown in for nothing.  Now if they would allow promo iPhone pricing with $30voice plan, it would be a done deal for my wife, as I’m sure it would be for a lot of other  people.

Your ignorant. Just because you don’t use it doesn’t mean you should get it anyway the whole purpose is it is a phone/pda. Buy a friggin’ iPod touch; you’ll have the same functionality. I work at a phone retailer and I am astonished how many people act shocked when they can’t get the iPhone discounted on a 20$ month plan. Your another one of those ridiculously dumb people.

If the subsidy on your phone is 500$, and you only paid 20 a month, it would take over half your contract for them to make any money.

Then we have people like you complaining about cancellation charges when you lose/break your phones a year and a half through your contract. Sheesh.

Think things through. And don’t complain you cheap people.

Did I ask for a $20/mth plan? I was suggesting a $30/mth min voice plan. Who is the ignorant one here?  Using your logic, Bell must be losing money on me because I got my iPhone 4 at the sub price($51/mth taxes in1), but my plan straight up as a non-retention plan when pricing all the features I have, would retail for aprox $70/mth BEFORE TAXES!

Oh, I’m well aware that my sub price is worked into my mthly plan, and Bell is still making money on my discount plan and covering the subsidy, so spare me the “wanting something for nothing speech”. If they had their way, they wouldn’t allow wifi radios in their smartphones so you would be forced to use their data all the time.  (They did it with earlier Blackberry models in Canada where they were wifi capable in other markets, but not in Canada because the carriers didn’t want it). It took Apple to force them, that if they wanted to have the iPhone to satisfy the pent up demand in Canada, it’s Apple’s way, or deal with the influx of iphones coming over the border, where they would only make money on plans and never on the device.  Once that started, the carriers lost their control over hardware makers over the wifi functionality, thankfully!

And you said it yourself!  It’s a phone /pda which is exactly what my wife needs.  She has a Touch already(trying hard here not to spew descriptive adjectives about you level of intelligence!), but shockingly, she would like to carry one device instead of two!  Crazy, I know!

And for the record, I know of a few people who have gotten iphones from carriers with voice plans only at a sub price, but it’s like pulling teeth, but some of the carriers can do it and will do it as a last resort to keep a customer since it costs more to acquire a new cell customer, than to discount to retain a customer, but only through them directly, not at stores like yours with such skilled and understanding staff!/s

The purpose of having an iPhone is having a phone that’s connected to the internet, not having a phone that’s connected to a 3G network. You know, when you live in an area where you have access to wi-fi 99% of the time, what is stupid is paying twice for internet access.

Plus, there’s enough non-internet features already in an iPhone to make it an appealing choice anyways. I think of GPS, 720p video and a high quality camera (for a phone, at least).

Since I paid full price for my iPhone, I got to choose the plan that fitted me well, and now I’m perfectly happy with my 30$/month plan. And 3 years from now, I will have paid less than what would have cost me to get the subsidized iPhone 4 with a 50$/month plan for the same period of time.

Oh, and let me point out that calling names will not make your point more valid.

Lol that’s not even a good retention plan price for one. You got noobed.

Second, I was talking in general about people like you. 30 a month works out to 16.7 -> round up that’s still pretty damn close to a year and a half. You tried to sound so smart here. FAIL.

Third, if she wants both, you should suck it up you cheap son of a —–. Think, if you didn’t buy a touch and just bought an iPhone in the first place, call it 200 dollars, that’s the equivalent of over 5 dollars more a month you would be saving. Bet you didnt think of that einstien.

Fourth, the stores don’t have controls over promotion for upgrades. I work for Bell. Don’t act like you know how it works. Another uneducated statement. This in my Opinion is the stupidest thing I’ve read today. Thanks for this entertainment.

And say all you want about how educated you think I am. Most people on here will you see just like I do; cheap as hell.

Maybe you took “you” too literally, i thought you’d pick up on how I basically was categorizing the cheap ppl that complain about data on a cheap plan.

Sorry you couldn’t figure that out on your own.

Next time I’ll dumb it down for you.

For sure Gary, my point is out. I don’t need to say anything further. Please keep my posts up since they really are rant words and not extremely vulgar. And I believe they are more than valid points.

Others agree, based on the “likes” it’s definitely worth keeping up in the wall.
