[Update] Add SBSettings-Like Toggles To Your Homescreen On iOS [Without Jailbreak]

Update 3: Don’t bother purchasing IconProject–just visit http://iphoneza.co.za/IconSettings/ and it’ll do the same, but for free (thx @justinluey)!

Update 2: For Personal Hotspot, use (thx Paullomax):

prefs:root=INTERNET_TETHERING

Update: Here is a screenshot of my homescreen folder with shortcuts made, plus the images I used for the icons. If you want others, just do a Google Image search on your iPhone and crop the ones you find. – Gary

I’ve always said that the strongest reason for me to jailbreak my iOS devices till date has been SBSettings. Once you get used to the ease with which it gives you access to all the common system toggles with a simple swipe, you simply hate the fact that you cannot install it on your iOS device just because it cannot be jailbroken (such as iPhone 4S or iPad 2 running iOS 5). Luckily, a decent workaround has been discovered by The iPhone Addict (via iDB) which can somewhat replicate the SBSettings functionality by putting shortcuts to settings like Bluetooth, Wifi etc. on your homesecreen without any jailbreak.

Here’s a brief tutorial:

1. Download the App “Icon Project” available in the App Store for only $0.99.

2. Next you will select what kind of shortcut you want to make. In our case, you will choose “URL(Homepage)”. Simply input the link of the appropriate settings toggle into the text entry box, listed below:

About — prefs:root=General&path=About
Accessibility — prefs:root=General&path=ACCESSIBILITY
Airplane Mode On — prefs:root=AIRPLANE_MODE
Auto-Lock — prefs:root=General&path=AUTOLOCK
Brightness — prefs:root=Brightness
Bluetooth — prefs:root=General&path=Bluetooth
Date & Time — prefs:root=General&path=DATE_AND_TIME
FaceTime — prefs:root=FACETIME
General — prefs:root=General
Keyboard — prefs:root=General&path=Keyboard
iCloud — prefs:root=CASTLE
iCloud Storage & Backup — prefs:root=CASTLE&path=STORAGE_AND_BACKUP
International — prefs:root=General&path=INTERNATIONAL
Location Services — prefs:root=LOCATION_SERVICES
Music — prefs:root=MUSIC
Music Equalizer — prefs:root=MUSIC&path=EQ
Music Volume Limit — prefs:root=MUSIC&path=VolumeLimit
Network — prefs:root=General&path=Network
Nike + iPod — prefs:root=NIKE_PLUS_IPOD
Notes — prefs:root=NOTES
Notification — prefs:root=NOTIFICATIONS_ID
Phone — prefs:root=Phone
Photos — prefs:root=Photos
Profile — prefs:root=General&path=ManagedConfigurationList
Reset — prefs:root=General&path=Reset
Safari — prefs:root=Safari
Siri — prefs:root=General&path=Assistant
Sounds — prefs:root=Sounds
Software Update — prefs:root=General&path=SOFTWARE_UPDATE_LINK
Store — prefs:root=STORE
Twitter — prefs:root=TWITTER
Usage — prefs:root=General&path=USAGE
VPN — prefs:root=General&path=Network/VPN
Wallpaper — prefs:root=Wallpaper
Wi-Fi — prefs:root=WIFI

3. Then design your icon. There are a number of options here and with a little effort, you can make some really good looking icons.

4. Select “Create”.

5. You will then be taken to a web page that displays your icon and gives you the option to add to the homescreen. Click the icon displayed at the bottom of your Safari app as instructed on the web page.

6. Name your icon and place on your homesceen in the desired place. I recommend setting up a folder to put all your icons in.

That’s it, Enjoy!

The app says your icons won’t work if you uninstall the app. Does anyone know why? Doesn’t it just create a web page with the link to what you want? I don’t want the app running background things, I just want to make a bookmark to the Bluetooth settings!

Awesome!  Apple hiding the bluetooth so deep in the settings is beyond comprehension.  Until the 4s jb comes along, this will do very nicely.  Now if we could find some Appstore implementation of BiteSMS, life would be perfect.

😀

I’m guessing the app somehow overrides the default icon settings with a link to a file in your photo roll.  Without the app, the link is no longer active?

just a thought

Nice workaround. Cheers to the developer!

So that would mean that the app runs in the background to keep the link active? Like this same thing would be doable if we could put the address in safari but freeze it for a second and add bookmark/homepage before it opened the settings up. Ugh

You can do it. That what’ I’ve done, without having to buy the app, but I’ve only figured out how to get the bookmark saved in my bookmarks list, not on my homescreen (yet). Here’s what I do…

1. do a google images search for the image you’d like for your shortcut (example, search for bluetooth icon).
2. go to that image and bookmark it, calling it ‘Bluetooth’.
3. go into your bookmarks, and edit the Bluetooth bookmark, changing the URL from the image link to prefs:root=General&path=Bluetooth
4. Now when you are in Safari, select the Bluetooth bookmark and it’ll open the Bluetooth prefs.

Obviously this isn’t a complete solution and it likely adds more clicks to the process than just going the regular route…but, I’m hoping that someone will figure out how to add a bookmark to the homescreen from the Safari bookmarks and this will be done.

…that gives me an idea…

That was a waste of 0.99.  You save 1-2 taps, but this isn’t the desired solution.

Those 1-2 taps add up. Having a shortcut to Bluetooth on the homescreen is priceless. $0.99 isn’t a lot. I bet the developer is pretty happy his app has exploded.

Amazing workaround! Any way that the icons in this post could be made available in full res? Thx for sharing!

This is a great workaround and I can finally put a Bluetooth link in the home screen, but I don’t understand how this work; why is it trying to launch then closes Safarii first before it goes to the Bluetooth window?

The icon you are creating is a URL shortcut which, by default, opens in Safari.

Anyway to actually “activate the wifi/bt”? Where and how did you get those icons does not seem to be included in the app?

Thanks!

If only we could save that as an actual page/HTML bundle on the homescreen.

I tried this page, problem is if you save it as a homescreen icon it must reload the page and icons every single time you open it. It’s not cached. So if you hit the Airplane mode it would toggle it on, but you can’t use this to toggle it back off–you get a “not connected to internet” type of error.

This works pretty well. I am looking for the URL for the Personal Hotspot. I have tried various versions of prefs:root=PERSONAL_HOTSPOT

All to no avail. Any ideas??

I am using it to make custom icons for website shortcuts. I love being able to create an icon instead of having a miniature screenshot of the site as the icon.

Wish there’s a way that you can access the quick toggles even within an app like SBSettings.

It’ll be great if it’s in the pull down notification center screen. 🙂 So it’s always accessible anytime.

There’s an app just released called app switcher (99 cents) that allows u to put the shortcuts in notification center. I then just moved the app to the top of notification center and it works great.

Anyone know how to get mail to the mail fetching screen through one of these shortcuts?

I like to have fetch going but not during the night when I’m trying to sleep.

This is sooooooooo fu**en badass! Thank you so much for sharing this! Now I will actually use my bt headset when driving. It stuns me why Apple just doesn’t make things easier, but you have Usman. You’re the man!

If you’re on the fence about spending the 99 cents I advise you act fast… I have a feeling Apple will be taking this app down from the store.

Justin Luey

You don’t need an app to do this, iOS has a robust URL scheme that you can use.

This web site makes it easy to save all the shortcuts with an icon:  http://iphoneza.co.za/IconSettings/

Just click the shortcut you want, and select ‘Add To Home Screen’.  Free and easy.

Wow man, your way is much easier and adds the icons for you already! How long has this been around? I just wasted 99 cents. Is it safe for privacy? I’m not sure how this all works so just wanna make sure.

These have been around for a long time.  I used a different one before, but I can’t find it right now.

These should all be perfectly safe, because they are just bookmarks. You can look at the URL before saving to make sure it’s not redirecting you to any strange links.

All we need now is someone to make a new site with better icons and a little nicer design.

DON’T BOTHER WASTING YOUR MONEY!

Justin Luey posted a link to a site that does it ALL FOR YOU!

Free and easy…. Just how I like em 😉

Usman, you should update the page so that people don’t waste money for something that is out there for free and easier to use.

Not working with iPhone 3gs. Could it be due to the new iOS 5.1? I just updated to the new software. Please help me find a solution. I tried both the new .mobileconfig and the old version, neither worked.

the Rios website below doesn’t work on 3gs either, so I’m thinking its either a problem with iOS 5.1 or iphone 3gs.
