How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G (2.0.2) with QuickPwn (Video Tutorial)

by Gary on August 25th, 2008

Happy Monday morning boys and girls, hope you enjoyed your weekend! Today we have another video tutorial, but this time on how to jailbreak your iPhone 3G on 2.0.2.

Apple has been pretty good so far with iPhone software updates. Exactly one week ago iPhone firmware 2.0.2 was released. This update didn’t release any new features, but mainly its purpose was to “fix bugs” which many people have experienced with their iPhone.

In my case I jailbroke my iPhone 3G using WinPwn, a relatively straight forward process. Since my iPhone 3G is still on 2.0.1, updating via iTunes to 2.0.2 would in essence put my phone back “in jail”. So what’s a fella to do in this situation? Well, to solve this the fine folks from the Dev Team released QuickPwn!

With QuickPwn, it does not create a new custom firmware that you need to restore your iPhone with. That’s why we have WinPwn for Windows users and the Pwnage Tool for Mac users (I know, all these names can get confusing). QuickPwn will jailbreak your 2.0/2.0.1/2.0.2 iPhone/iPhone 3G/iPod Touch in a simple and painless process.

There are some caveats to updating your iPhone 3G to 2.0.2. If you’re interested in a future phone unlock (aka, using your Rogers iPhone 3G with another GSM carrier), updating to 2.0.2 via iTunes will update your baseband. This might hinder your phone unlocking chances in the future. As for me, I have my first gen iPhone that is unlocked and ready to take traveling if need be. I was experiencing some keyboard lag and general sluggish application launches on my iPhone 3G so I was eager to update.

Video Tutorial on How to Jailbreak iPhone 3G 2.0.2 with QuickPwn

These are the steps I took to jailbreak my iPhone 3G on firmware 2.0.2 (I am not responsible for anything that goes wrong with your iPhone 3G! USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!):

1. Plug in iPhone 3G, launch iTunes. Click on “Update” and let iTunes download/install 2.0.2 on your iPhone 3G.
2. Create a folder called WinPwn on your desktop. Download iPhone 3G firmware 2.0.2 and save it in the folder.
3. Download QuickPwn and save it in the folder.
4. After iTunes has updated your iPhone, shut down iTunes.
5. Launch QuickPwn and follow the prompts. Choose iPhone 3G. Select Cydia and Installer.
6. Browse to the 2.0.2 firmware saved to the WinPwn folder. Click next
7. Follow the instructions. Turn off iPhone 3G. Put into DFU mode.
8. QuickPwn will work its magic and in about 10 mins you’ll have your iPhone 3G jailbroken!

Here is the video tutorial…

**side notes: the pineapple logo appears during the QuickPwn process, even if you did not select it in the beginning; it will disappear later
**I filmed the video fairly quickly so excuse the odd parts and ends and missing theme music (aka the absence of Rick Astley); if you don’t like my videos, please cry in the comments as usual. :)
**Anyone here figure out my “shut it down” reference?
**I just happened to receive a text message right after the jailbreak in case anyone is wondering why that sound occured.

After updating to 2.0.2 I immediately noticed that the keyboard lag was gone. Now texting and typing was a lot faster, and moving around the iPhone was a bit smoother. Of course my 3rd party apps were gone, but after installing Winterboard again the previous themes were still on the iPhone. So far so good and I’m glad to be on 2.0.2! I will be doing a video review of my jailbreak to show what 3rd party apps are available for those that are on the fence (Quake is pretty neat!).

So if your iPhone 3G is on 2.0.1 and you’ve been waiting to jailbreak, this could be the time for you. Or if you’re on 2.0.1 and jailbroken, and have wanted to update to 2.0.2 and try out QuickPwn, hopefully this video tutorial has helped. Let me know how everything goes in the comments!

Is there a link to download the 2.0.2 software to save onto hard disk?
  • Justin
I've read 2.0.2 prevents some Apple store applications from working. Has that been fixed?
  • teenwolf
I'm already using 2.0.2. Can I still use quickpwn or do I have to use winpwn?
  • teenwolf
is this still the beta version of quickpwn?
  • @Justin: I forgot to add the links, updated! As for preventing apps from working, so far my App Store apps are working fine.

@teenwolf: QuickPwn is the only way to JB 2.0.2 at the moment. This is still the beta.

Since the 2.0.2 update of my 3G Rogers, I have been unable to use any Apps that were downloaded from the store. Tried sync, backup, restart etc... nothing works. I'm not really used to Apple being that clumsy!!!

I am seriously considering going back to my Treo 680
  • ayyywa
same here. None of the downloaded apps work.
  • mikem
What's a poor Mac boy to do? Pwnage Tool doesn't support 2.0.2 yet. I'm hoping to see a new Ziphone release. It is basically what QuickPwn is (does not build a custom firmware). I used Ziphone when I first got my iPhone. Anyone else prefer Ziphone?
  • Justin
I believe I got the right QuickPwn (QuickPwnGUI120) and launch the software, gone through the select stuff and hit GO. However, it encounter a quickpwn.exe problem from Window and forces it to quit. What do I do? I noticed from your video that there are 4 files in the folder but I only have 3. the 2.02 restore file, QuickPwnGui120 ext plus readme.txt. what's the 4th one? That may be what's causing the error because I don't have it?
  • JD
im having the same problem. how did you get yours to work? or did you?
  • Justin
download the QuikcPwn version for your link above, seems to work now. Finger cross as I'm going through the power down steps, etc...
  • Justin
It works. Horray! Thank you so much iPhone Fan!
  • nice work Justin! You're welcome!
  • X1Zero
SHUT IT DOWN!!! USELESS!!! GET OUT! GEEEEET OOOOUUUUT!!!
    I know ur sneaky references....

does jailbreaking your iphone with quickpwn erase all your music and restores your iphone to orignal settings and i need to redownload all the apps and put all my music back? or does it just jailbreak and not touch my music and apps like ziphone?

    thanks
  • Mark
Just downloaded this and ran it, worked great took only 3-4 min all old apps work everything still on my iphone perfect!
  • ifokust
    i just tried it....success!
  • ifokust
spoke too soon....I'm stuck at the Apple logo (phone won't boot).
    :(
  • Justin
For me. all the content remain intact, so the Quickpwn only added Cydia and Installer. Works great.
  • ayyywa
Thought I should update my previous post about Apps not working after 2.0.2 update. Need to log in App Store and download a free app. Now all of them work.
  • ifokust
okay, after restoring my phone, restarting my machine, making sure all Apple related processes were killed i tried again.

    Success!
  • Darren
can anyone tell me where to enter the coupon code for a discount on the invisible shield? Please and thank you.
  • rich
I used quickpwn to update to 2.0.2 on my 1st generation iPhone. Everything works great except yahoo amil and you tube. I get "you must connect to you tube via the Internet". WTF is that all about. LOL.
  • Anthony
darren: enter iphoneinca for the coupon code

    quickpwn works great so far
  • Veasna
does 2.02 fix the keyboard sluggish performance on the first gen i phone?
  • john
well it crashes on windows xp laptop and on a vista right after you click go it starts do the hash then the text then crashes everytime
  • magimat
Ok, I'm really about to jailbreak my 3G now.. but I'm still a little worried about a few things. First, once its done, is there any difference between an iphone jailbroken with either QuickPwn or WinPwn? I mean can I still use iTunes and update to a new apple firmware by clicking update in iTunes?

Also, will I lose all my music, settings, downloaded apps, etc after jailbraking?
  • Robert J Perry the 1st
i'm gonna do it! ill let yall know how it goes...
  • Darren
yes i know the code...but where do you enter it?
  • Robert J Perry the 1st

hey.. i've been reading about jailbreaking and iphone hacks all night and I came across this IPA thing. It seems that many AppStore apps have been hacked and can be installed using IPA files and a little SSH hack. But all I read talks about firmware 2.0. I was wondering if anyone knows if all this is still possible with 2.0.2 ? What do you say iPhone Fan, did you try those hacked apps? Can you confirm it this hack still works with 2.0.2 ?

Thanks for everything.. this blog is an infinite source of iphone knowledge!
  • magimat
hey.. how come my last post got deleted?

Anyway, could you please let us know if there is any difference between an iPhone jailbroken with WinPwn and another jailbroken using QuickPwn? I know the two methods are different, but is the result exactly the the same or is it better to jailbreak with WinPwn since it installs a whole new firmware instead of just hacking the existing one?

    Thanks
  • magimat
hmm.. it seems I have some trouble with my posts, it seems to work and then they disappear.. so I'm trying to post from firefox this time since I noticed a javascript error on this page in IE7. I'm sorry if finally everything gets posted twice

    So here are my questions:

  • Those apps you talk about should work on 2.0.2 as OpenSSH is still available. :)
  • @anthony: jailbreaking with quickpwn will leave your settings the same since you don't do a restore. Apps will be still be there, except for the 3rd party apps through Cydia/Installer.

    @Mark: awesome!!

@ifokust: way to fix it up!

    @Justin: Nice work!

    @Darren: visit here: http://www.anrdoezrs.net/click-2941053-10566561
    then enter code "iphoneinca"

@rich: an update to QuickPwn has been released. Will be updating blog soon.

@Veasna: Yes...my sluggish keyboard is pretty much gone, but still slow at times.

    @John: Try another computer

@magimat: jailbreaking will not lose your settings because you will still have a backup in itunes each time you sync. QuickPwn: does not require restore; WinPwn: requires installing a custom firmware

@Robert J: Way to follow instructions! Nice work! :)

@magimat: I have not tried hacked apps and will not try them.
  • Camaro17
hey iphone fan nice work again, i have a question. Did the iphone dev team create QuickPwn? and if they did why would it come out on windows first i thought they prefer mac lol, and whats the difference between QuickPwn and Winpwn? i mean they both jailbreak, unlock and activate a 2G iPhone right? the only real difference is that WinPwn needs to do a restore and load a custom firmware, is there any bonuses/upsides to using Winpwn? or is it now obsolete?
Sorry for all the questions man lol

    Peace
  • @Camaro17: I believe they did. As for why it is Windows first, it could have to do with the people involved with its creation! WinPwn is just a quick solution...but remember, when you update to 2.0.2 in iTunes your baseband is updated too. So if you're waiting for a GSM unlock, your chances may be hindered. Aside from that, QuickPwn is just quick...it is the perfect solution for people using the iPhone 3G legitimately with a network, like us Rogers users. Jailbreaking has gotten very easy for those who try it now!

anyone try cracked ipa's on jailbroken 2.0.2, i tryed one and no luck, ill try again later
  • Andrew
ssh into on your iphone and on the app click properties and the numbers in a box. change them to 777
  • Stephen
I followed all the steps stated herein but as soon as I run QuickpwnGUI120, the program stops and does not do anything. Is there a particular reason for this? Has anyone experienced the same problem/ How do you fix this?
  • Try rebooting your computer, or redownloading the app again.
  • Luboss
i wanted to ask, i have an UK O2 monthly contract sim card and if i jailbreak my iphone 3g 2.0.2 using this method, will it still have reception?
the reason i am asking this is because i have seen a few people complaining that after a jailbreak, they seem to loose signal until they do a full restore via iTunes
    thank you
  • If the iPhone 3G is being supported by your carrier, this should work.
  • Luboss
what do you mean supported by the carrier?
    Thanks for replying
  • I mean if your carrier is an official supplier of the iPhone. You should still have reception after doing this.
  • Luboss
O2 are the only network selling the iPhones at the moment in the UK.
so i should give it a go? if it doesnt work, i can restore through iTunes if im not mistaking?
    Thanks again
  • 2hot4u
I have tried it on a averatec with xp and a hp with vista and it craps out right after the hashing I already have 2.02 so im not restoring then using quickpwn im just using quickpwn any idea ?
  • eva
Can I use QuickPwn on my 2G iphone (I'm still on 1.1.4) or do I have to use WinPwn?
  • It should work. The updated version of QuickPwn now has Bootneuter support to downgrade your baseband. But of course, do your research. I'm going to test it out on my first gen soon.
  • Camaro17
oh so Quickpwn doesnt work on a 2G iphone that i need unlocked? Thanks

    Peace
  • The latest version of QuickPwn has Bootneuter and that should work for your 2G iPhone...
  • anastako
sorry but the DFU process is completely whatever!

Does not work on mine 3G iphone
  • Dustin
im with rogers and i just pick up the iphone 3g. did exactly the same as the vid and havent had any problems yet. works great
  • Jennii
    Hi everyone!

Does anyone know whether or not I can return my phone to factory settings after using quickpwn? And if so, how?

    Sincerely,
    Jennii
  • Just do a restore to 2.0.2 firmware...and it'll be good to go.
  • gary
    Thnks bro,,, ur awesome
  • you're welcome! :)
  • Robin
The jailbreak worked, but it came with Installer v4.0 and none of the old sources work on it.
So you can get basic things that are already available in Cydia.
That's the only problem i had with this.
  • Tim
Holey crap. I did this and it worked. The Windows GUI crapped out, but the phone continued on and the jailbreak worked!!! Now to learn all about Cydia!! I tell you, this is definitely not for the faint hearted! :-D
  • Did it... This is definitely not for the faint hearted! Now I just need to learn all about how to use Cydia and such!!! Can I still plug in to iTunes no problem??
  • Dean
Has anyone tried doing this with Fido?

I just did it and it worked perfectly.... but on the top of the screen it says my carrier is Rogers... when i'm on Fido?

    kinda wierd no?

anyone else have it do the same thing?
  • aShae
I am thinking about doing this for my new FIDO 3G, which I am on contract for. I read in an above post that he lost his FIDO signal for a ROGERS one.. Is there any other problems with this method for FIDO before I jailbreak it...

FIDO FIDO FIDO? Thats all thanks
  • Should work regardless if you're on Fido, Rogers, or any other network. It does not affect what network provider you are with since the jailbreak has to do with the phone itself.
  • Aimee
I have a previously jailbroke original iphone. I did the jailbreak/upgrade to 2.0.2 using QuickPwn. My phone never left the pineapple screen and now the phone doesn't recognize my SIM (for Fido). Does anyone out there know how I can restore my carrier?
  • Try restoring and doing it again...
  • Aimee
I did the upgrade on my previously jailbreaked original iphone using QuickPwn. While I was running the download the pineapple never went away and the circle (processing icon) kept on spinning. Now my iphone no longer lists my carrier (Fido) or any others. Can anyone out there tell me how to fix this problem?
  • ogieone
ya after doing the jailbreak I can't call no one or use any of the call features. Is there a way to fix this?
  • Laurent
yea i can't use my iphon 3g to make phone calles either
  • Laurent
help!! can't use my iphone to call after quickpwn
  • teenwolf
    @ ogieone & laurent

Go into installer installed packages then uninstall Kate. That will do the trick
  • andre
    will this work?
  • teenwolf
    @ Andre

If you're talking about the phone fix. It worked for me.
