iPhone 2.2 Firmware Preview: Streetview, Bus Routes, Location Sharing

Share:

iPhone 2.2 firmware should be coming soon and along with it a new list of features. What’s coming in store for us? We’ve previously broken down 2.1 firmware, but will we get the new features we wished for in upcoming 2.2 firmware? According to leaked screenshots we should be getting Streetview via Google Maps, walking directions, transit times, and location sharing. I love seeing these previews so let’s take a closer look, shall we?

Google Maps Streetview and Walking Directions

For those who have used the Streetview feature in Google Maps, you already know how cool this feature is. It allows you to take a virtual tour of any major city that Google has mapped out already. Currently only major American cities have Streetview but this feature comes in very handy if you are planning a future trip or want to do some reconnaissance. Note the tiny circle in the corner with a map of where you’re looking. COOL!

Transit Routes

If you notice the tab in the middle above, you’ll see an option for bus routes. Well now you’re going to get some more detailed information on transit times. We’re not sure if this will have Canadian transit times implemented, but just imagine the possibilites for those who take transit (those in Vancouver can already use the Translink iPhone website).

Location Sharing

This is a major feature I’ve been waiting for, the ability to share my location with others. As you can see above you’ll now be able to email your GPS coordinates to a friend or family member. If they also have Google Maps on their phone (or are already using an iPhone 3G) you guys can stalk each other in real life.

This is what makes me love the iPhone so much–firmware updates that bring new features to the phone itself! Hopefully Apple will address the current lag I’m still experiencing on my iPhone 3G. Fix that and I’ll be a very happy camper once firmware 2.2 is released! What do you guys think of these upcoming features?

I would love to have a landscape keyboard! how hard is that to do, its in the web browser already- come on apple! and copy and paste would be nice- but not necessary, overall I love the iPhone because it will only get better as time goes on! Best purchase of my life!

It’s nice yes. Apple needs to add landscape capability with the keyboard for their default Apps if they really want to go against the other giants in the smartphone industry. Finally, and most importantly for me, we need native the background push/notification service. I’m still amazed that there is no Task manager (To-Do) app by default. It is included by default in Symbian, Windows Mobile and Blackberry OS, why shouldn’t it in iPhone OS?

These are nice things but hopefully they address the real problems the phone tends to have. I’d like to see a more stable safari, landscape emails built in to the mail function, fix the minor glitches with the ipod, flash for safari and finally i really hope they can add a simple ‘cancel’ button to stop you from sending stupid and/or drunken text messages 😛

  • SSK13

P.s. any idea when 2.2 is set to be released?

I am kind of waiting for the turn by turn instruction for the GPS and Google Map WHILE DRIVING. Now I am only available to use the turn by turn by pressing NEXT NEXT NEXT, but it does not tell you automatically while you are driving. Only seeing a dot flashing on the map is simply not enough…hope they can address that usability.

  • You should be fine if you turn on Airplane Mode. Another sure easy way to be able to use your iPhone’s WiFi without worry of data usage is to take out the SIM card. Problem solved. 🙂

Google Maps does include transit info for Vancouver. Try it on a desktop computer — I find it more useful than the TransLink trip planner. Don’t know about other Canadian cities, though.

  • It would mean that we are getting transit directions as we are already able to do that with google’s service. I use it all the time. http://www.google.ca/transit

It’s a LOT quicker to load than the bloated translink website, although their new mobile website is quite nice.

How about a release where no new features were added, only bug fixes? I’d settle for automatic fetch to be working again. A bug that kills fetching while the display is off is a fail of epic proportions.

Yeh, I’m in the same boat. My TomTomOne car navigator crapped out on me recently and I’ve had to rely on the not-so-great Iphone Google Maps app, which is better than nothing, but no substitute for a proper navigator. Adding turn by turn live navigational functionality to Google maps would be great, so as to avoid having to add yet another app (and likely pay mega bucks for it). From the sounds of it, this value added functionality is coming soon… great, cuz I could not find any car navigator apps in the Apple Store…

I want MMS (picture) messaging. So stupid, the iphone takes pictures, and my plan with rogers includes picture messaging. But for some reason iphone doesn’t have it. And i tried Swirly MMS (from Cydia), and it doesn’t work for me. So get on that Apple.

Not being able to download some attachments – like WMV, mime, etc – is my bone of contention! If Apple cannot do this than hopefully someone will construct an application to do this function. I downloaded a landscape keyboard (free) and it works just great for email etc. But no reason for Apple not to keep up with the competitors to iphone 3G.
