Latest Rumors: iPhone 2.2 Firmware + Costco $149 iPhone

Welcome to Wednesday’s iPhone rumor round up everybody. In the past day there have been some interesting reports regarding the launch of 2.2 firmware and Costco carrying the iPhone 3G at a significant price drop. Let’s get onto some more details shall we?

iPhone 2.2 Firmware to be Released on November 21st?

Greek site iPhone Hellas has an insider report that the upcoming 2.2 iPhone firmware will be released on November 21st. So far we’ve covered some of the highlights of 2.2 firmware, which will include Google Maps street view, walking directions, and location sharing. Another feature that has been reported is over the air downloading capabilites of podcasts.

The latest 2.2 screenshots that have emerged courtesy of BGR includes revisions to the App Store. You can now sort app categories by themselves! So now you can see Top Paid, Top Free, and Release Date in each category (this outta make it easier especially since it feels like there are over 1 billion apps nowadays).

Other changes include icons placed beside each category and the ability to browse through all the application screenshots instead of just one (sorta like browsing screenshots via iTunes). Check out these screenshots:

Regardless of what has been reported, most of us are in dire need of copy and paste, SMS forwarding, and landscape keyboard mode (Firemail currently solves this problem). Let’s hope 2.2 firmware will have more bug fixes to remove the dreaded sluggishness and lag of a jailbroken iPhone. Keep your fingers crossed!

Costco to Sell the iPhone 3G for $149?

Trip Chowdry from Global Equity Research is one man team who writes on trends and rumors from Silicon Valley. His latest “Silicon Scoop” reports that Apple is going to sell the iPhone 3G at Costco locations starting in January for $149. Could this really be true? I think this comment made by commenter ‘applecart’ on MacDailyNews sums it up: “$149 @ costco, PLEASE. jobs would sooner cut his wrist with a unibody.” LOL, now that’s what you call taking advantage of the incredible ah-loo-min-noo-um (damn you Jonathan Ive) unibody!

I agree that it does sound far-fetched that Costco would get their hands on the iPhone 3G so quickly. However, with the US economy currently in a endless downward spiral, maybe a price cut might incur some more sales. Reports have said that Apple is cutting back its iPhone production. Maybe Costco is the answer Apple needs to sell 10 trillion iPhones? One thing is for sure, if you buy the iPhone 3G from Costco you will have the limited iron-clad Costco warranty on your side!

So, which rumor do you think will pan out, if any?

Any upgrades are great, but who knows if we’ll get the ones we really want. It can’t be that tough to add the landscape keyboard to the Mail App, can it? And copy/paste? Come on. This should have been on there since day one. Maybe they just want to keep us griping, as it just brings more attention to the iPhone. ;-)

I’m more interested in the 32GB iPhone 3G rumours that are still floating around. Speculation is that we’ll see it by the end on Jan ’09. This comes from 8GB iPhone stock drying up and not being replenished. Apple may drop the 8GB, and just sell a 16GB and 32GB. Again, just rumours around the net, but I would like to see it happen. The memory is the only thing holding me back from upgrading to the 3G.

^ yeah i want to see a higher harddrive capacity but probably won’t jump on to 32 right away. Hopefully one day they will have 160GB iphones like the ipod classics. Bet they have the technology for that right now..it is just locked away in some vault underground. I wonder if there will be a decent way to upgrade your phone considering how we are all on contracts.

Not sure about the rest of the country, but the iPhone 3G has been available at Costco here in Edmonton since launch. The price is the same as if you were to buy it at a Rogers/Fido store.

Just add the ability to search for information in the calendar. Or not block others like Polar Bear from doing so.

    http://www.polarbearfarm.com/search/support/index.html

Till then, I don’t care what they do to the ‘toy’ part of the phone.

Apple keeps talking about this being ‘part of the enterprise’ and a business tool, but if you can;t do simple things like finding out what’s in your calendar, without flippinig through the ‘pages’, it’s just a lie.

    Or marketing. Same thing maybe.

Think about the copy/paste part… it is a multi-touch phone and look how many jesters that you have to do in safari you implement the copy/paste.. There is currently a very very good idea out with a very detailed video on how it would work in each application, and be available system wide. Remember that copy/paste on the iphone could be the copy/paste for multi-touch UI’s for years to come. Here is the link to that video http://venturebeat.com/2008/08/04/magicpad-details-how-device-wide-iphone-copy-and-paste-could-work/ As you will see in the video that is currently an app on the app store called Magic Pad that lets you copy/paste but only within the app.

Well, i know that for rogers if you’ve had your current handset for atleast 12 months your able to get an upgrade to a new phone..so aslong as the iphone 4G doesn’t come out before July 11th, mostly everyone will be able to upgrade.. or atleast the 9 million people that bought them on that day.

    I guess I stand corrected.

Do you guys have Rogers retailers in your Costco’s? Doesn’t Rogers have an exclusivity agreement? I went to Costco all the time in Regina before moving to Ontario and never saw one.

I don’t get it. What is stopping people from buying the phone and just popping in an active SIM card instead of activating it through customer service?

The iPhone 3G at Costco is a mini authorized reseller of Rogers/Fido and has no connection to Costco. I was talking about Costco selling the iPhone outright like they dell iPods.

I used to work at “wireless etc”, the wireless retailer in costco. I am quite sure that Costco will not carry the IPhone at a reduced price because when it came tie for negotiations to get the IPhone into our locations, even though we are not affiliated with Costco, Costco wanted all of our products to be carried at a reduced price, including the IPhone. This violated Apple’s policy and as a result almost lost us the opportunity to carry the IPhone. You will notice that the IPhone is actually carried at a reduced price, $5 off the 8GB and $10 off the 16GB. However these prices may have changed since I haven’t been working there in a while. At any rate, I don’t think that Glentel (owners of Wireless Etc.) would be took keen on Costco carrying IPhone and I don’t think Apple would offer it for a drastically reduced price.
