Apple Statement: ‘We Stopped Supporting Carrier IQ with iOS 5’

Apple has issued a statement over Carrier IQ, and in a note to AllThingsD, they mentioned Carrier IQ was removed from iOS 5:

“We stopped supporting Carrier IQ with iOS 5 in most of our products and will remove it completely in a future software update. With any diagnostic data sent to Apple, customers must actively opt-in to share this information, and if they do, the data is sent in an anonymous and encrypted form and does not include any personal information. We never recorded keystrokes, messages or any other personal information for diagnostic data and have no plans to ever do so.”

Apple clearly emphasizes the company does not record keystrokes or personal information. Earlier, Rogers and Telus claimed they don’t have Carrier IQ on any of their devices.

While this may prove to be true for iPhones running iOS 5, one our readers did find evidence of Carrier IQ on his Rogers iPhone 3GS running iOS 4.3.3. The Carrier IQ binary (/usr/bin/aw_ice2) is present on his phone.

Carrier IQ is taking heat in the U.S., as Senator Al Franken has demanded answers to questions over the alleged tracking of devices.

money, or at least the potential to know what their customers are doing to make something better, or more suited to their usage

Glad no keystrokes were recorded because that would be disastrous for people who use password managers like 1Password, Keepass, etc. I’m shocked Apple ever agreed to include something like this in their phone. It’s nice they limited it some what, but disheartening to see that they ever included it.

Ok I get that carriers want to make their network better but they still could offer up opt in and out options for the customer instead of forcing them into it.

i am assuming that carrier iq received data from our phones, with our purchased data packages, shouldn’t they reimburse us for that data that they stole from us? sounds like a class action lawsuit…
