As the countdown to WWDC 2026 begins, Apple has officially announced the winners of this year’s Swift Student Challenge. For 2026, the annual competition’s focus is squarely on the intersection of AI and accessibility.
Apple selected 350 winners from 37 different countries and regions, representing a massive global effort. Among these, 50 Distinguished Winners have been invited to Apple Park in June for a special three-day experience.
What makes this year’s batch of winners stand out is their sophisticated use of AI tools to tackle complex issues. Susan Prescott, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations, noted that the breadth of creativity is truly remarkable. Students aren’t just learning to code, they are harnessing the power of Apple platforms and generative AI to build tools that are as technically impressive as they are meaningful.
One standout project is “Steady Hands,” created by 20-year-old Gayatri Goundadkar from India. Inspired by her grandmother’s struggle with hand tremors that prevented her from painting, Goundadkar used Apple Pencil stabilization and SwiftUI to create a digital canvas. Interestingly, she utilized Anthropic’s Claude AI to help unpack complex technical concepts during the development process.
Another Distinguished Winner, Yoonjae Joung, developed “LeViola,” an app that allows users to play the viola without needing the physical instrument. By using camera overlays and motion tracking, the app helps users navigate proper bow positions. Joung represents a growing trend of “Swift-first” developers who are leveraging on-device machine learning to create inclusive user experiences.
For these 350 winners, the journey is just beginning. As they prepare to head to Cupertino or join the festivities online, they carry with them the proof that a simple app playground can drive lasting change.
