Back in January, Corning unveiled its Gorilla Glass 2 at CES 2012 as 20% thinner (0.8 mm), much stronger and scratch resistant than previous version. Since Apple has already made it official that the iPhone uses Corning Gorilla Glass, it is quite safe to assume that the the iPhone 5 will sport Corning’s latest iteration, the Gorilla Glass 2 as pointed out by 9to5Mac. It is also believed that apart from making Apple’s iOS device glass, Corning is also producing some MacBook Pro stuff for the Cupertino giant.
In the New York Times’ iEconomy series, Corning is said to have already shifted its glass manufacturing facilities to China (most likely for Apple):
“Our customers are in Taiwan, Korea, Japan and China,” said James B. Flaws, Corning’s vice chairman and chief financial officer. “We could make the glass here, and then ship it by boat, but that takes 35 days. Or, we could ship it by air, but that’s 10 times as expensive. So we build our glass factories next door to assembly factories, and those are overseas.”
