iPhone 2.0 Sneak Peak: Screenshots of Features + Video

by Gary on March 14th, 2008

There are some things to look forward this summer, aside from the beautiful sunny weather. If you haven’t read my post about Apple’s SDK Press Conference Summary, you’re in for a surprise.

This summer will bring the release of iPhone 2.0 OS in June. Just yesterday a few screenshots of the new features and a video were leaked showing the new features.

From left to right: Cisco VPN, Exchange Mail setup, iPhone 2.0 homescreen with AppStore, mass email delete:

It doesn’t end there though! iPhone 2.0 has already been JAILBROKEN by the iPhone Dev team! That’s right, cracked before it has been officially released! Man, those guys really are amazing. Here is another possible screenshot from 2.0, showing parental controls:

Here’s a little video for you of a jailbroken iPhone on 1.2:

(thanks to TechCrunch for the video)

Definitely some neat stuff! Looks like we have a lot to look forward to in the next big firmware update. :)

• The hackers got the firmware jailbroken from an emulator of the 2.0 firmware as i understand it. I may well be wrong?

Does anybody else have any information as to if they used an emulator or not?
We know there have been a couple of crappy videos here and there on the web, but we finally got our own grubby paws on the yet-to-be released iPhone 2.0 beta, which isn't officially due until this June. It isn't exactly awash with changes, but here's what you need to know:

Exchange is so on! Changes are pushed over the network, but over WiFi it does check-ins, so it's not as instantaneous.

There's no contact search that we can see, so far. Maybe that only gets turned on if you have thousands of contacts (which we definitely do not).
There's a new button in the calendar, but we don't know what it is and can't make it do anything.
The App Store is there, of course, but doesn't do anything yet (except error out that it can't connect).
Wondering when Apple will make good on its agreement to license Cisco technology? Well, the branded Cisco VPN screen has definitely been added to the VPN settings. We couldn't really test this one, but assume it works well. We don't know if it supports SecurID or other hardware token authenticators.
Parental controls most certainly work. Marvel as we turn off YouTube!

You can now order your preferred WiFi networks.
In addition to having a new sideways scientific mode(!), the basic calculator now does commas and has new, useful functions for the math nerds; both the calc and the iTunes icons have changed.
By far our favorite new feature is multi-select in mail, though. Now when you hit edit you can select as many messages as you want and delete or move them as a group. Friggin' finally. Now where's that two-pane client?
Definitely encouraging stuff in here. We'll have some video up of this thing a little later. Big ups to our source(s) for hooking us up with this!
Tom, ziPhone makes it so easy to upgrade... That I would go ahead and restore your phone to 1.1.4 then use ziphone to unlock + jailbreak!

I upgraded from 1.1.3... for fun. I guess I'm a little more adventurous than iphone fan when it comes to upgrading.
• LOL! ;) Hey, I am also adventurous, but I was just waiting for that "one click" upgrade to be released...and low and behold, ZiPhone is hailed upon us! :)
• tom
if i have 1.1.2, should i update to 1.1.4? or even 1.2 when it comes out? and if i do, what would be the easiest way?
• i like iphone but sometimes it makes me angry because wifi.
• Dusty
Ya I agree.
• I need LEAP authentication.. I can't do anything at the office because we use LEAP over WiFi

What I found interesting for us Canadians is that TechCrunch says (and the screenshots show) that it is already unlocked !

And isn't Cisco, PPTP, L2TP VPN neat ? I definitely use that at school.

Great resource, keep up the good work.

how did they get their hands on the 2.0??

hopefully it will be that easy for them when the official 2.0 release happens!!
• Tim
Jailbroken already eh! Well that is a good sign :-)

I think it's awesome so far, we are gonna have some wicked applications released :) I just hope the price doesn't scare me away LOL
• Dusty
Right on! I love how it has been jailbroken already, but its still a BETA version....
(Quoted) Note: the beta is listed as version 1.2
