Rogers Announces 6GB for $30 iPhone 3G Data Plan!

**Edit: This promotion is also available from Fido too!**

Breaking news this morning folks! Looks like Rogers has caved to consumer pressure (just after I posted about no unlimited data) and today they have announced a brand new data plan for a limited time. iPhone users who sign up between July 11th to the end of August will be able to get a 6GB for $30 data plan!

Now, if you compare this to the $30 for 300MB data plan they have now, and the original $60 for 400MB voice/data plan, it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

Rogers iPhone 3G Launch Day Festivities Plus 8:00am Opening at Rogers Plus

This is straight from the horse’s mouth: Starting at 8:00 am July 11, Canadians will be able to purchase the new iPhone 3G at special launch day events to be held at six Rogers Plus stores across the country.

These are the Rogers Plus locations you need to start lining up at if you want your hands on the iPhone 3G FIRST! Too bad there aren’t more Rogers Plus locations! You’re hooped if you aren’t in one of the following six cities…

The following Rogers Plus stores in these cities will open their doors at 8:00 a.m. (all times local) on Friday, July 11 for advance purchases of the Apple iPhone 3G:
Toronto: 112-10 Dundas Street East
Montreal: 1015 rue St. Catherine Ouest
Ottawa: 690 Bank Street
Halifax: Unit 265, 7001 Mumford Road
Calgary: 5244 Falsbridge Gate, NE
Vancouver: 2097 West Broadway

Rogers Plus locations will also some special events for customers waiting in line, such as FREE breakfast (yay) and a chance to win prizes. Here is a summary of what you need to know if you’re planning on buying iPhone 3G from Rogers.

For Fido customers, the same activities are happening at 8:00am, but only at the flagship store in Montreal.

Where Can I buy the iPhone 3G?
- Retail locations: Rogers Plus, Rogers Video, Rogers Wireless, WirelessWave, TBooth and Wireless etc
- Online via the Rogers website
- Limit of 2 iPhones per person

What Are my Options with Voice Plans?
- choose from Rogers’ existing voice and smartphone data plans and additional features
OR
- choose from Rogers iPhone 3G bundled plans
- existing customers can keep their current voice plan–just select a separate data plan
- Upgrading? Check your upgrade availability (HUP: Hardware Upgrade Package) and then choose a plan

Well, is it possible to say Canadian consumers have a mini victory here, or not? If you compare it to the other Rogers data plans for the price, it’s a steal. However, it’s still not unlimited but it’s a pretty good start. It looks like big media coverage and the RuinediPhone.com petition hoopla might have made a difference.

Bait and Switch Possibility?

Although Rogers has bowed to consumer pressure, one might consider they had this plan in the bag all along? How did Rogers go from $30 for 300MB to $30 for 6GB? That’s a massive leap forward. Could it be that we have fallen for the classic “bait and switch”? This is just a thought. Either way, this is great news for Canadian iPhone 3G users! Liz Hamilton had some new words for Canadians:

“We listened to our customers, everybody from those who are very tech savvy to those who just knew they wanted this device and were really enthusiastic and didn’t know how they were going to use the data but knew it was a data device,”

iPhoneinCanada.ca and RuinediPhone.com on Global National

In case you missed it, Global National had a segment on the price of new text messages and the iPhone hoopla. Enjoy (excuse the poor quality, recorded with a digicam):

Has this new plan changed your mind about buying an iPhone 3G?

how does the email work on the iPhone?....can u use WiFi and not get charged??
Also, I'm thinking of getting the $30 6GB plan thru FIdo....how much data is 6GB?...(ie. how many pages can i browse)
  • Andrew D
I just got my iPhone from Rogers, and am paying 65 dollars a month. 30 for the special 6 Gig data package, and 35 for the voice plan. The voice plan is the small business special which gives you evenings and weekends, 400 daytime minutes, and 100 long distance minutes anywhere in Canada. I think until the new carriers start showing up this is the best we are going to do.
  • bhupi
    Hi,
I have not got my iphone yet so cannot answer the questions regardign that, What i can tell u is that if u r pressing number 1 on ur cell phone to listen to VM then yes minutes will be charged, but if u have visual voicemail and check it through that then no minutes r used. and rearding LD, if u r in ur local area then incoming is not LD from whereever it comes.

    Hi,
I bought myself an iPhone today! yay! I am new to Rogers.. so am not used to their aweful straegies of drawin money out of me yet. I am already payin 100 bucks for my voice+data plan which includes 250 mins +unlimited evenin n weekend calls (startin 9) + a smart plan bundle for 15 bucks + the ever-so-famous 30 bucks data plan. I am tryin to ensure that i dont pay a buck over ths... So i need some help here..
    1. How does the maps work? On 3G? or wifi? I am turnin off my 3G n usin wifi al i can to ensure i dont get fucked..
    2. wat abt the weather, mail, safari, stocks, etc? do they run on 3G as well? do they automatically switch to wifi wen they see a reliable network? is there any place i can change these settings?
    3. r voicemail mins taken off my regular mins?
    4. wat ab the itunes n app store?
    5. my family lives away frm me and r within canada but LD.. is there a plan that lets me get free ld incomin?

    help me out guys!
  • bhupi
Hi Friends, Regarding Visual voice mail, rogers have plan for $15 that gives you call display, visual voice mail and 2500 txt msg, i think that is a kick ass price. Regardign contract, i think you have been using GSM for years then why not contract and a discounted price for phone, u can change ur voice plan as many time u can in those three years and every year u r eligible for hardware upgrade. If rogers make mistake bill, call them they will go anywhere to help u out. i called Bell and they were not able to waive my moving charge of $55 even i threatned to cance and with rogers u dont pay for after sale service adn still complain. U cannot match prices with US, US has large number of customer base and in canada how many people we are may be 30-40 million.
  • Van
Fido has the 30$ for 6GB as well. It is not posted on their website same as Rogers for it is a new package if you subscribe now till Aug. It's not bad definitely imagine how much you get charged when you do online on you phone nowadays? And yes it is for 3yrs and the price won't go up you are in contract :). Its been more than 10yrs I have been using a celphone so why not for a 3yr contract right?
  • Asd
Someone needs to lookup the definition of "bait and switch".
  • Aaron
To echo Tuna's comment, does anyone have any thoughts on whether this 6GB/$30 offer will be extended beyond August? Is this the sort of thing that they'll keep "extending", or will new purchasers really be expected to pay $30 for 300MB, or thereabouts? Reason I ask, I'm waiting for my current Bell contract to expire before switching.
  • Rob
I talked to two different rogers customer service reps...and they both told me I would be fine.

But my question is...being on a family plan, that with my number is less than $30 a month, will I be able to add the 6GB for $30 plan?

One rep said it wouldnt be a problem, but another one who sounded less sure of herself said that I couldnt. And then told me I could howeve upgrade to an iPhone "value" plan, and then later opt out of the family plan, keep my number, change to a cheaper voice plan and add the data plan...which just sounded complicated.

So...if my family plan < $30 a month plan isnt valid for this promotion...what I guess I am asking is, is this a promotion to ANYONE who buys an iPhone from July 11th to July 31st? or only existing Rogers customers?

Ps...anyone know when the next shipment is coming to canada after the 11th? will it be before the 31st? both Roger's reps told me that every 2nd call is people asking about the iPhone. I plan to go early...but not before the suns up.
  • Jason
Now, the only question I have: Will there be a "take home" (no contract) price? like AT&T is apparently doing in the States, and if so, will I still be able to get the 6 GB for $30 deal? Either way, I might actually buy though, might take me a while, but hopefully before the end of August, even if I have to get a contract.
  • Tuna
WTF!!! I'm in the military on operation right now! I don't get back till Oct. somtime. Does this mean I get screwed for this so called "sweet deal" robbers is putting on? (6GB for $30, still capped btw,and still low daytime min). Nice, thanx again rogers for screwing over those that serve!!!!
  • O
Questions: Does this mean all the iPhone voice/data pacakages now come with 6GB? So if chose the $60, which currently has only 400mb, will now have 6GB for the same price?
  • Yep, I'm definitely buying one now. I'm delighted.
  • T
hey gary, a little off topic, do you think when you know the answer you can post something like a sort of "how to upgrade to software 2.0 for dummies (on an unlocked iPhone)"? i want the 2.0, it looks great, but i'm at 1.1.3 and have never upgraded so i haven't the slightest clue how... so that would rock.
  • genny
i've never heard of it (for fido), but by any chance does fido have my5 as well?
  • luke
    This is a start.

I'm going to mull it over, and decide before August...
    Visual Voicemail better be included.
  • Evan
    @Tommy
for an extra $10 bucks you can add MY5 to any voiceplan which allows unlimted calling AND text to any 5 numbers you choose. They can be any local number with the exception of your own number (for voicemail although with visual voicemail you should never have to call yourself). Having my5 brought my daytime minutes down from 500+min/mo to using less then 150min/mo so its worth it IMO. Rogers told me you can add MY5 to the iphone package or use it as your baseline voice package instead.
  • Tommy
@Evan - What is the MY5 package? Thanks.
  • Tim Aucoin
Hi Evan... Here's the link where I read that. I'm working on a solid confirmation this afternoon.
    Tim

    http://www.electronista.com/articles/08/07/09/r...

.....Users will also be able to upgrade to the iPhone 3G, according to the company, and should be purchasable online. However, Visual Voicemail is considered separate from the data plan and will cost an additional $8 per month, as will text messages. Subscribers can still order these individually or as part of value packs......
  • Jay
Rogers just threw the worst plan first and then released an a-little-better-than-worst but still worse plan, trying to make people feel better?

but it's still a very bad plan!
  • Evan
PS. Unless you are an absolute data whore and do nothing all day but sit on your iphone surfing the net downloading porn in the middle of nowhere, there is no way you should EVER go over 6GB in 1 month. It might aswell be unlimited.

As far as the phone minutes go, add on a MY5 package for $10 bucks and its all good.

If what Tim says is true:
200min(+MY5),6GB, 5pm evenings, 125 texts, visual voicemail for $100/mo after tax and tip(SAF). Not bad. Better then any Blackberry plan I'd say. I think I'm sold.
  • Evan
    @ Tim

Can you confirm that? Does that include JUST Visual Voicemail or something else aswell?
  • Dusty
Still CRAP! The worst of it all is the 3 year contract, I still can't get over that. Thats jusy UGLY.... lol
  • Tim Aucoin
Grads... the Visual Voice mail package as a separate item is $8 per month.
  • john
    Hi John,

Glad to hear you like the offer.

The offer is for a limited time, but the other pricing will remain
(iPhone Bundled Plans or any Rogers voice plan + data plan). It is good
for the 3 year term of the contract. Standard policies apply when the
term is over, so it will be dependent on your needs and the pricing we
would have in place at that time.

    Cheers!
    Andrew
  • Any word if this includes the visual voicemail? Is that considered data?
  • Marc
    @Travis

    1. 3 year contract - You expected this to change? You're obviously not a current Rogers customer. All their plans are 3 year. Deal with it pal!

    2. Capped data plans - 6gb is great for $30. Maybe you don't understand how much that is.

    3. Voice minutes - Asking too much IMO.

This is what I would have expected if Rogers did the right thing when they first released the pricing. I think it's a great step forward.
  • Marc: Yes, that was what I was trying to say. You're "hooped" if you're not at one of those 6 cities, since they will only be the ones with an 8am opening. :)
  • Marc
I think you might have misread the press release.

I believe many more locations will be selling the iPhone, though only the 6 stores mentioned will have special events.

That was my understanding the first time I read it. Was I wrong?
  • Travis
WTF people. There was 3 major issues with Rogers plans.

    1. 3 year contract
    2. capped data plans
    3. # of voice minutes

ALL THESE POINTS ARE STILL TRUE.

WE SHOULD BE MAD AS EVER ABOUT BEING CONTINUALLY MANIPULATED INTO THINKING BEING FUCKED IN THE ASS IS GOOD FOR US.

The plans Rogers is offering SUCK. Just because the headline of the article states that they've 'caved' doesn't make it so. They haven't and won't until they realize the iPhone in canada is a FLOP.

Get real people. Thinking we've 'won' only to receive $30 a month for capped bandwidth is sad.
  • gards
Anyone know what the Visual Voicemail package costs?
  • Mark: The 6gb plan would be for 3 years.

    Justin: edited to include Fido!

FIDO IS IN TOO PEOPLE! **HAND CLAP**
  • Trent Fehr
That's great news! I'm definitely "in" for an iPhone now! My only question is will Fido offer the same deal? I'd much rather get in on Fido's earlier evenings (7PM as opposed to 9PM).
  • Justin
Will Fido have this promo too? Please say yes.
  • Mark
Is the $30 for 6 GB for then lenght of the 3 year contract? or is this just for the first 3 months like most other promos?
  • Alain Vezina
I have voice plan (250min) for 20$ evening start at 20H.

    So

    20$ (voice plan)
    30$ ( new data plan)
    11$ (voicemail/txt message)
    6.95$ (access fees)
    --
    67.95$ ...

    It is pretty good !
  • @JeffC:

The news release was posted here:
    https://your.rogers.com/investorrelations/news_...

They still haven't updated their pricing schedule on the iPhone related site, but when they do, it'll be here:
    http://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless-prod...
  • Alex H
The plan is in their press release :
    http://micro.newswire.ca/release.cgi?rkey=16070...

I will be getting an iPhone. The plan is not perfect, but at least I can add data to my current plan at a decent price now.
  • JeffC
I've just spent 10 minutes on Rogers site and I can't locate this new $30 for 6GB plan anywhere - perhaps it's well hidden ??

The Rogers site is so confusing it's infuriating.
  • That still doesn't solve the issues with the low amount of daytime minutes, pitiful txt amounts, the need to purchase additional packages for caller ID / Visual Voicemail, the late evenings, etc...
