Rogers Announces 6GB for $30 iPhone 3G Data Plan!

**Pre-order your iPhone 3G invisibleSHIELD and get 20% off your order, plus FREE shipping! Limited time offer, order today!**

**Edit: This promotion is also available from Fido too!**

Breaking news this morning folks! Looks like Rogers has caved to consumer pressure (just after I posted about no unlimited data) and today they have announced a brand new data plan for a limited time. iPhone users who sign up between July 11th to the end of August will be able to get a 6GB for $30 data plan!

Now, if you compare this to the $30 for 300MB data plan they have now, and the original $60 for 400MB voice/data plan, it’s definitely a step in the right direction.

Rogers iPhone 3G Launch Day Festivities Plus 8:00am Opening at Rogers Plus

This is straight from the horse’s mouth: Starting at 8:00 am July 11, Canadians will be able to purchase the new iPhone 3G at special launch day events to be held at six Rogers Plus stores across the country.

These are the Rogers Plus locations you need to start lining up at if you want your hands on the iPhone 3G FIRST! Too bad there aren’t more Rogers Plus locations! You’re hooped if you aren’t in one of the following six cities…

The following Rogers Plus stores in these cities will open their doors at 8:00 a.m. (all times local) on Friday, July 11 for advance purchases of the Apple iPhone 3G:
Toronto: 112-10 Dundas Street East
Montreal: 1015 rue St. Catherine Ouest
Ottawa: 690 Bank Street
Halifax: Unit 265, 7001 Mumford Road
Calgary: 5244 Falsbridge Gate, NE
Vancouver: 2097 West Broadway

Rogers Plus locations will also some special events for customers waiting in line, such as FREE breakfast (yay) and a chance to win prizes. Here is a summary of what you need to know if you’re planning on buying iPhone 3G from Rogers.

For Fido customers, the same activities are happening at 8:00am, but only at the flagship store in Montreal.

Where Can I buy the iPhone 3G?
- Retail locations: Rogers Plus, Rogers Video, Rogers Wireless, WirelessWave, TBooth and Wireless etc
- Online via the Rogers website
- Limit of 2 iPhones per person

What Are my Options with Voice Plans?
- choose from Rogers’ existing voice and smartphone data plans and additional features
OR
- choose from Rogers iPhone 3G bundled plans
- existing customers can keep their current voice plan–just select a separate data plan
- Upgrading? Check your upgrade availability (HUP: Hardware Upgrade Package) and then choose a plan

Well, is it possible to say Canadian consumers have a mini victory here, or not? If you compare it to the other Rogers data plans for the price, it’s a steal. However, it’s still not unlimited but it’s a pretty good start. It looks like big media coverage and the RuinediPhone.com petition hoopla might have made a difference.

Bait and Switch Possibility?

Although Rogers has bowed to consumer pressure, one might consider they had this plan in the bag all along? How did Rogers go from $30 for 300MB to $30 for 6GB? That’s a massive leap forward. Could it be that we have fallen for the classic “bait and switch”? This is just a thought. Either way, this is great news for Canadian iPhone 3G users! Liz Hamilton had some new words for Canadians:

“We listened to our customers, everybody from those who are very tech savvy to those who just knew they wanted this device and were really enthusiastic and didn’t know how they were going to use the data but knew it was a data device,”

iPhoneinCanada.ca and RuinediPhone.com on Global National

In case you missed it, Global National had a segment on the price of new text messages and the iPhone hoopla. Enjoy (excuse the poor quality, recorded with a digicam):

Has this new plan changed your mind about buying an iPhone 3G?

I just got my iPhone from Rogers, and am paying 65 dollars a month. 30 for the special 6 Gig data package, and 35 for the voice plan. The voice plan is the small business special which gives you evenings and weekends, 400 daytime minutes, and 100 long distance minutes anywhere in Canada. I think until the new carriers start showing up this is the best we are going to do.

Yes you can use wifi for email, you just set up your account on the iphone, its in your settings.
if you wifi at your place you will be paying for the internet there, it does not affect your phone’s data plan.
As for 6 gb, i have it also, and i haven’t even been able to use half of it, and that included streaming full tv episodes to my phone over 3G, maybe once there is a tethering program out there that actually works, ill be able to use more of it.

    To answer tghe questions above
    1. How does the maps work? On 3G? or wifi? I am turnin off my 3G n usin wifi al i can to ensure i don’t get fucked..If you turn off 3G, then you dont have to worry, your phone will only get data when you have wifi
    2. wat abt the weather, mail, safari, stocks, etc? do they run on 3G as well? do they automatically switch to wifi wen they see a reliable network? is there any place i can change these settings? once 3G is off, those thing will not work, until you have wifi, all thing have access the net will use wifi when the phone is connected, you can set your phone to notify you when there is a wireless network. All of the setting are found in ‘Settings”
    3. r voicemail mins taken off my regular mins? VM will use your day time minutes, you can call it from a land line, usually call your cell then hit #, visual VM will only work with 3G
    4. wat ab the itunes n app store? i haven’t tried downloading apps with out 3G im thinking they will not work, but you can use wifi. In the app store anything over 10 mb it will not let me download with out wifi anyways. Same fore the music store, i can view, but can not download till i have connected to a wireless network.
