Rogers/Fido iPhone 3GS: Offically Launched Online

Man oh man, it’s been quite a couple of days eh? On Monday’s WWDC 2009, Apple announced updates to their MacBook line up, Snow Leopard, and introduced the iPhone 3GS.

Well, yesterday Rogers finally announced the iPhone 3GS on its website, and Fido as well! We all thought Fido would not be selling the latest iPhone as it has become a “low cost carrier”. I guess that has changed because if people desire the latest iPhone, they will pay anything to get it (the 6GB/$30 data plan is back too)!

Rogers/Fido Websites Updated with iPhone 3GS Pricing

Regardless, Rogers was a day late in announcing any official news about carrying the iPhone. We only could read tweets by their official Rogers spokesman, Keith McArthur. You gotta feel for the guy as he’s been bombarded by hundreds of tweets, yet all he can respond is with the vague company line.

Upon hearing about the iPhone 3GS being announced and seeing that Rogers logo on the WWDC presentation screen, Canadians started to wonder: How am I going to get the iPhone 3GS if I’m already on a 3 year Rogers/Fido contract?

If you are on a contract, you will not be eligible for a Hardware Upgrade (HUP) until you are at least one year into a contract–or is it 24 months? Rogers’ policy on early HUPs has been to inform people that the iPhone 3GS will be available for a non-contract price. How much? They won’t say until we are closer to the June 19th launch date.

We will be writing a definitive Rogers/Fido iPhone 3GS upgrade policy guide coming soon–watch for it! Are you going to upgrade to the iPhone 3GS? If you’re in a contract, how many months in are you?

Rogers seems to have JUST updated their HUP to say 24 months for ‘smartphones’ and 12 montsh for regular phones…..just in time to screw over those who have 3G and want to upgrade to 3GS…. this really upset me, i just broke my iphone tonight, and am now going to have to buy the 3GS, at full price i guess….

I really hope Rogers does something for customers who bought the 3G when it came out. They have to realize that shafting the tech crowd isn’t going to be good for them, as they are the ones lined up to buy products on launch day.

Is it going to be cheaper to pay the $200 cancelation fee and then re sign up? that would be stupid…

Ditto here. Has mine for almost a year I think since I got it when it became available. I’m with Fido, will just have to see what the rules and price are to decide if I want to or can I even upgrade at all.

I do see the point of an upgrade & will skip the 3GS generation. Sure the processor is faster – but Rogers network cannot support 3G speeds! The camera is 3megapix – but I use an SLR camera. Google maps has the compass feature. Cycorder has video. Did I forget anything?? ;)

So true, I don’t think its really necessarily to upgrade unless ur desperate! lol I think you mentioned everything… Unless Apple is hiding something under that case, u never know with Apple :P
Then again, there’s so many blog posting and forums stating that its an INCREDIBLE upgrade! Doh! Ill just wait and see with a hands on ;)

I called Rogers yesterday to see if i could upgrade and she told me some good news. Im still not sure if it’s 12 or 12 months into the 3 year agreement where you can get a HUP but she said im eligible for an upgrade to the iPhone 3GS 16gb for only $230, just a $30 fee even though im still on the contract. I plan to get this upgrade on another line on my account but she said that you need a data plan on the account when you buy an iphone, but there was a workaround by buying it at the Rogers store instead of online or over the phone.

Guys is it possible to share the 30$/6gb on my two rogers accounts? Meaning 15$/3gb per line?

No. The 6gb plan is an individual plan only

    Rogers can’t support 3G?
Actually late last year they rolled out the 7.2Mb so they are actually ready to run the faster 3G.

Can you fit your SLR in your pocket? SLR’s are great to take pics but when you want to take pics on the fly 3 megapixel is not too shaby!

Does Fido charge a system access fee for their version of the iPhone plan?

I would upgrade for the Nike+iPod built in and the compass, but I got my 3G in august of last year. I will wait to see if they come up with an upgrade option.

Do I understand correctly; even if I would be willing to pay the full price for the 3Gs, Rogers won’t let me buy one? Is that correct?

I called a couple days a go and they said the earliest is 6 months before my contract expired.

Well – whenever I do a speed test I get about 6-700kbps on the network. My downloads are slow due to Rogers & not due to my 3G phone. On WiFi it goes zoom-zoom ;)
I have never taken a photo with my 3G. The camera is not something that I use.

I spoke to a Rogers CSR this morning. Asked them about the HUP. He told me that I wouldn’t be eligible for another year (bought the phone over the phone July 14th,2008 and I couldn’t upgrade until July 14th,2010).

I asked him what options I have currently. He spent a couple minutes looking for any information, so I’m really unsure whether these CSRs are fully informed just yet. He told me I’d be better off trying to buy a phone elsewhere and then connecting it to Rogers… which kind of confused me because where else can I get this phone? The Apple Store?

And then also told me about cancelling and then trying to get another contract. It would seem odd that Rogers wouldn’t give present contract holders an option of upgrading earlier if they wanted.

Currently an iphone 3g user since July ’08. For me, i did a quick check online and it states that I am eligible for an upgrade on my line as of July 19, 2009.

No 3G S for me though, barring I get a real good deal on the 32GB model….which is not too likely.

Confirmed? if there’s only a $30 extra fee, it’s reasonable for me… does “still on the contract” mean there’re only 2 years left? or locked in a brand new 3yr contract?

The new iPhone is all about speed !! that’s it, that’s it. I cannt bear slow loading speed and app crashing all the time….. i tried pdanet with my laptop and i noticed the rogers/fido 3g network is really fast, not that bad as somewhere said at all. the bottleneck is the freaking slow iphone 3g….

I just checked my account on line, when I clicked on Upgrade Hardware, it says I have to wait till July 25/09 which would be my 1 year date of a 3 year contract…
Who knows with the new iphone though……
I can’t see them selling like crazy ( as they did last year) maybe Rogers will have to make it a bit easyier for us 3G owners…..ha ha ha…who am I kidding….it’s Rogers…

The online check means you are eligible for a regular phone as of July 19, 2009…not a smartphone(which the iphone 3gs is considered). It’s a 2 year wait for a smartphone upgrade. So your not eligible for a new Iphone till July 19, 2010
