Setup Fido EDGE Settings for the iPhone

Since I posted about the Roger’s EDGE settings for the iPhone yesterday, it’s only fair that today I post about Fido’s EDGE settings, right? Well, I never did setup EDGE on my iPhone when I was signed up with Fido’s Pay As You Go. I didn’t want to spend the ridiculous prices Canadian carriers charge us for data. Anwyays, I’ve done some research and the following information is what you’ll need to enter in order to activate EDGE on your iPhone with Fido.

How to Setup Fido EDGE Settings on the iPhone

  1. Settings –> General –> Network –> EDGE
  2. Enter the following settings:
    • APN: internet.fido.ca
    • Username: fido
    • Password: fido

Some users have had trouble configuring EDGE for their iPhone with Fido. Here are some tips that might help you along your way:

  • Call Fido’s Customer Service line and ask them to activate your EDGE account if you haven’t done so before
  • If EDGE still doesn’t work after that, call Fido and ask for a new SIM card. Many users have been able to get a replacement SIM free of charge (your number will stay the same)

I’ve been pretty busy with work lately, but don’t worry as once I get some more time I will post more information about owning and using an iPhone in Canada with Rogers or Fido. It’s time for me to ask YOU a question: What do you want to read about? I’d love to hear from you in the comments, or via the Contact Page. Cheers!

The $7 unlimited data is not compatible with iphones, don’t get scammed!

I love all these workarounds people keep coming up with.:)

Bruno Daigle, not sure what you’re doing, but if properly unlocked, you only do it once per Apple update. I have 2 of them from week 2 and 2 more weeks 46 and 49 all are very happy, it sounds like you either used a goofy approach to unlock or bought one that had been messed with by a kid on crack.

Oh yeah, they all run 1.1.4.

Download Zibri’s ZiPhone app and do it right.

    Get the details from iClarified.

After that, if no go, you have a serious problem.

I am using LG Viewty instead of iphone, but I do want to join this conversation as I just added the value pack from fido. On fido.ca (or rogers.ca) it stated that it have to be a fido-certificated phone in order to go under the unlimited surfing Option.

I had set my phone to be internet.fido.ca and loaded all the webpage instead of google map, google mail…

I want to know if i will be charged if I am using a non-fido certificated phone to access the internet under the unlimited-surfing plan.. Anybody know how would Fido/Roger finds out I am using a non-fido phone?

the IMEI number from your device comes up on Fido/Rogers end…that tells them what make/model phone you are using.

$7 internet plan is a SCAM

I spoke to the FIDO reps all day today and figured this out. The fido plan is only free when you use the http://wap.fido.ca portal to browse the internet. On a regular fido cellphone that is the home page and will be free, there are a bunch of websites that can be accessed from there like facebook. If you go to a regular website, like google, you will be charged 5c/KB.

I am getting my iphone in a few days so I am not sure if safari can open wml pages. If they are not, then the data will not be free.

Hi. First of all, thank you for the settings provided for edge at the top of this page. I entered it into my iPhone and it worked. I’m really surprised that it did, but it worked. I have an 8gb iPhone, running 1.1.4

So here is my question: I am with Fido on the old City Fido plan. I don’t have a data package. Will i be charged for using the edge network with the settings provided at the top of this page if i don’t have a data package with Fido?

I’ve also read that the $7 unlimited package offered by Fido only applies to Fido phones only. Some say it doesn’t matter. Anyone been able to come up with a final answer to this query?

    Hey guys.
So i just spoke to Fido about an hour ago regarding the $7 unlimited surfing package. Pretty much got the same answer as Fahad did in the post before mine.

If you use the wap settings then your surfing is unlimited. But the pages you can visited WILL be limited as not all sites have a wap address. But from what i’ve READ, some of the most used and popular sites are supported. Don’t know how much truth there is to that, but i’m guessing it will be different for different people as everyone has their own idea of what sites are popular.

There is a second “data” setting the Fido rep. mentioned to me. I’m guessing this is internet setting that is provided at the top of the page, which is the one i tried out early this morning when i stumbled onto this lovely site. Whatever this data setting is, it is NOT UNLIMITED, but does allow you to visit ANY/ALL websites and view them REGULARLY like on a normal computer. It has a 25mb a month limit.

I mentioned to him that i was using an iPhone asked him to verify with his supervisor if it would be supported. He told me it would be. I asked him to verify with his supervisor. His supervisor said that as long as you know where to input the settings to get the EDGE network up and running the iPhone would be supported, however, you’re out of luck if you need any help as they don’t know anything about the iPhone and as a result would not be able to help you input or fix any settings issues you may have.

I think we’re better off using plain old WIFI than paying for a data plan. Conversley though, the 25mb limit from Fido is bigger than Bell who only offers an 8mb a month limit, which is apparantley their highest limit.

The Fido rep also mentioned that there was a “Value” package for $20, which includes: 2,500 text messages, enhanced voicemail, who called feature and unlimited internet surfing (using wap settings of course). That’s a pretty good deal i’d say. I’m paying an extra $19 a month with taxes and all i have is the 2,500 text feature. If i add a dollar more i get 3 more features i didn’t have before, including the unlimited surfing.

One could also get the date settings which allows you 25mb a month and use it only when you need it. Otherwise, just use your WIFI. From what i’ve heard, web pages on a cell phone are smaller in size so you don’t won’t be using up too much of your 25mb when you’re viewing sites. Use it when you really need it when there’s no WIFI around and you could have internet everywhere, all the time.

If there is anyone out there who has used the edge settings with the date package from Fido could you please tell us if you had any extra charges?

My apologies for the long post. Figured i’d share as much as i could in one go. Happy iPhone-ing!

Tried the $7 unlimited option with Fido for 2 months and all my browsing went through it, so I DIDN’T get charged. This is my 3rd month, but I’m being carefull on how much data I’m using.

Hey I was reading some of the fine print on fidoÂ’s website and it says that they will charge an extra 5 cents for evey KB on a phone not authorized by fido even if you have a surfing plan. Is anyone aware of this or if they charge for the iphone.

The $7 unlimited surfing plan with Fido works. I just signed up for it on April 2nd. I received my bill yesterday. The billing cycle was from Marc 27, 2008 to April 26, 2008. I was charged $19.15 for visiting a few pages on March 27, which is undestadable since i didn’t have the surfing plan at the time.

I signed up for the plan and here we are a month later. No charges. I used over 11,000 kilobytes. and didn’t get charged a single penny for it. It’s awesome. To top it all off, i even mentioned to Fido that i had an iPhone. the rep was nice enough to advise me to just monitor my usage, but that if my internet was working fine and iwasn’t getting charged for it i would be okay. He also mentioned that if the settings are entered incorrectly then you could also get charged.

So make sure you enter all the info correctly and you’re good to go.

    apn: internet.fido.ca
    Username:fido
    Password:fido

For those of you who are worried, just do it. It works. Also as a side note, back in late February and early March, i surfed the web with the settings i had entered WITHOUT being on the unlimited surfing plan. I only visited a few pages to make sure it was working. I ended up paying over $279 for it. So i guess you could say i’m an example of “before and after” lol. If you’ve used the settings and visted a few pages then expect to get billed for it very nicely depending on how many pages you visited. Sign up for the unlimited plan now or you’ll be crying about it later.

    HI,
Ok I wanted to conect my iPhone with Fido but they can’t because I need a IMEI code from a Fido phone. For them to be able to access my file they need this code so that I could have internet on my iPhone. Otherwise than that they can’t have accesss to the program because it does not see that what I have is their phone. Could someone give me a IMEI code from one of their phone from Fido and it has to be a Canadian phone. To be able to have this number take your Fido phone and enter the following *#06# and it will give you your IMEI code, this is what I need..

    Thanks

Just figured I’d cleanup a couple things here… First off, I work for Fido myself as a customer service rep (call 611, hit ’0′, and you have a 1 in 343 chance to get me). Second, down to the base of the information.

The IMEI number is not required to open internet access to your account. The only requirements are that you have the proper internet settings set into your phone, and to have an option (CSR’s call it a ‘SOC’) that adds pay per use GPRS access. The SOC code is GPPPU. Data is always at a base rate of $.05 / 1kb. Roughly 1024 kb per 1 mb, 1024 mb for 1 gb, and so on.
Anytime you are using an unlocked phone of any brand, make or model, you are automatically locked out on any and all technical support. And I’m guessing here that Jean is looking to get an IMEI number because he’s complaining of some sort of charge that he belives would have been caused by his phone, but rather than admit to Fido that he has an unlocked phone, he’s looking to get an IMEI number from another fido gsm locked phone to give them in attempts to pawn it off as the actual phone model he’s using. So please, do not give out your IMEI.

Anyway, back onto the the unlocked iPhone!

there are certain applications on the phone itself that automatically connect to the internet, such as the weather application, news feeds, and RSS links or bookmarks saved in your browser, stock alerts, etc. Each one off these applications connect at a set regular time (which we can see exactly when that time is ;) ) and download little packets of data from the apple server to update itself with newer information. Each and every time these applications are updating, they connect to any GPRS network settings currently placed inside the phone. if those settings happen to be Fido’s, then guess what… you can automatically get charged a lot of data transferring. Upwards of $10,000. (I’ve personally dealt with accounts a little above $19,000). Yes, it is true that once you add either the $7 unlimited surfing or the $20 value package that you can avoid these charges, but the reason that is, is only because we currently have a lot of network issues with unlocked iphones. Normally those options will ONLY cover you if you are surfing in the wap.fido.ca portal, also known as the surf download and play portal. Soon enough we will be updating our systems to change this option, so that you will be charged for data use with the application updates like normal. AT&T’s contract with apple covers customers for the data transfer, but we’re not AT&T, and we don’t cover it, they are valid charges.

Anyway, I think that’s it. I’ll come back and check here again the next cpl day’s for any questions if you want. BTW, not every representative knows this information, because this is not required information to know. I know this because I have a technical education background. Please do not expect the rep that you speak to to have ANY knowledge about the iPhone, let alone that it even exists. We know Fido, because we are Fido

Every time that I talk to a Fido rep I get a different answer, some say that I need a IMEI #, some say that internet can’t be connected to a iPhone, some say that it is possible and then some say that they are no surcharge on browsing if I set up the internet on my iPhone and then some say I will be charge. But everytime I want to connect the internet on my iPhone they try and they put me on old so that they could talk to a supervisor and then they come back saying that they cant. So FidoCSR if you are so good at this since you look like you are a pro! I would like a simple connection with internet on my iPhone with unlimited internet access with no surcharge for browsing like it is specified if you could read on top of this page…..If you could make that happen for me this is all I’m asking! nothing else. So if I’m confused as a FIDO customer it is Fido’s rep that took me there…All I want is to enjoy my phone ands use all that it as to offer without paying 10000$ a month. Is this to much to ask….Dear FidoCSR if you are able to do this for me call me at this # 613-266-1855 and if not I don’t need a different version of your explanation.

    Thanks
    Jean
