iPhone OS 4.0 Details Leaked?

Share:

We are just over a week away from Apple’s much anticipated January 27th event. What will arise from this day? The so called “iTablet?” How about iPhone OS 4.0? All we know is we are going to expect something new according to the event invite’s line, “Come see our latest creation”.

There is speculation that the lack of iPhone OS updates since 3.1.2 was announced, is due to the face that within OS 4.0, there are details pertaining to Apple’s latest “tablet”. Therefore, we have seen and heard nothing. However, according to BGR and their “source”, we have some iPhone OS 4.0 rumours for you to feast on today:

  • There will be multi-touch gestures OS-wide. (Would make sense for that as the rumored OS for the iTablet is close if not the same as the iPhone)
  • “A few new ways” to run applications in the background — multitasking.
  • Many graphical and UI changes to make navigating through the OS easier and more efficient. We haven’t had this broken down, but we can only hope for improved notifications, a refreshed homescreen, etc.
  • The update will supposedly be available for only the iPhone 3G and 3GS, but will “put them ahead in the smartphone market because it will make them more like full-fledged computers” more than any other phone to date. Everyone is “really excited.”
  • The last piece of information is the most vague, but apparently there will be some brand new syncing ability for the contacts and calendar applications.

Now, with these “details” above I would say they don’t tell us much as we all are expecting some sort of revision in 4.0 anyways. What we can conclude is that iPhone OS 4.0 will meet and exceed the features and current smartphone competitors (ie Google’s Nexus One and Android 2.1). Of course, we can’t expect exact details from sources so soon, as this could be just a trap by Apple to track down moles within the company.

What do you think about these iPhone OS 4.0 rumours? Are you salivating yet for something new to hit your iPhone?

I am more than ready for an iPhone update, but I do hope it is a big one.

Time for the iPhone Dev Team to get back to work!! 😉

    It would be nice to have a homescreen with the “OS 4.0”, that way I don't have to use Intelliscreen any longer;
It would be nice to change the alarm clock to include support for Shoutcast radio such as the used by “Clock Free”.
It would be nice to have the “OS 4.0” to include SBSettings natively 😉
Make the video cam available natively for the 3G instead of an app download
    Integrate GPower's shutdown tweak

If Apple just listened to the JB community's app mods and incorporated into the Iphone's OS, perhaps there wouldn't be a need to JB the iPhone? Maybe… just maybe 🙂

  • Let the cat and mouse game continue!!

  • Apple saw the community of jailbroken apps with the first gen iPhone. Did they respond with the App Store? Most likely, they've had this all planned way in advance. The secretive iPhone roadmap that's locked away in Jobs' office safe behind a painting on the wall. 😉

    Multitasking
    Custom background
Built in video recorder for iPhone 3G
Built in battery percentage for iPhone 3G
    Contacs+pic (fb style) on homepage
    Sb settings integrated…

    Thank you Apple !
No need for jailbreaking after that !

Battery life is real bad when compared to a Black Berry.

They should make it the highest priority feature in release 4.0

They claim to support “push” technology for email. From what I know this is NOT what is seen on a Black Berry. This should in fact optimize battery usage but it is obvious tht Apple don't control properly the sleep mode between paging cycles !

Multitasking is what I really want. Well, just let's see what they come up with. I agree it's time a big upgrade. Oh yeah, and itunes for Linux :), I can dream, can't I?? LOL!

I can't WAIT for a new OS! Only had an iPhone for less than a month but I already want a change. Do you think the os 4.0 beta will be avail for download after the 27th? I hope they will incorporate a lot of jb features natively. I hate that I can't jb my new 3gs without it being tethered.

  • It's true the iPhone's battery life is worse than Blackberries.

However, the iPhone's screen is also double the size (of the standard,
repeated 10 year old BB design), plus there are thousands more apps on the
iPhone that keep you glued to the phone, versus Blackberry's miniscule App
    World.

For these reasons alone, that is why battery life sucks on the iPhone. 😉
