Yesterday, AnandTech founder Anand Lal Shimpi shocked the Internet by announcing he was retiring from his iconic hardware review site to pursue other interests, after 17 years of running the publication.

Now, Re/code has the scoop on why Anand retired–he’s going to go work for Apple:

Anand Lal Shimpi, the editor and publisher of the well-regarded AnandTech site, is going to work at Apple.

An Apple rep confirmed that the company was hiring Shimpi, but wouldn’t provide any other details.

Shimpi last night detailed why he was retiring, noting “there are a bunch of challenges out there,” and his departure was not health or business related. Did Apple poach Anand from his own site?

AnandTech recently expanded their reviews to Apple products, which have become the benchmark for some of the best and thorough reviews found on the web.

Not sure what to think of this, but one thing for sure is Anand’s sharp eye for detail has caught the attention of Apple.
