Did iOS 4.1 Fix Your iPhone 4 Bluetooth Issue?

Hey everybody, Mitchell here again! This time I’ll be talking to you about a problem a few of us Bluetooth enthusiasts have run into. It seems several headsets, when paired with the iPhone 4, suffer terrible calling issues. Many people are complaining that it’s very difficult to understand what’s being said through the headset.

This problem seems to affect just about everyone who tries using Bluetooth with their new iPhone 4. Some report a muffled voice on the recipient’s end while others are saying their calls are lost or dropped completely when trying to use a hands free device.

Apple has promised us that the Bluetooth issue will be addressed in the freshly released iOS 4.1 update from yesterday. If you were suffering from this Bluetooth problem, did 4.1 fix it? What about other “problems” you were having from before?

Well, it fixed my iPhone 3G Bluetooth issue!

Ever since I got a stereo bluetooth last year I’ve hated the fact that I couldn’t use the next/previous track or volume functions. And finally it’s here!

How about speed issues on your 3G? Any better with 4.1?

  • Mb86

Actually Bluetooth on my iPhone 4 works even more reliably, particularly with sound quality, than my iPhone 3G ever did. Was never broken in the first place.

Not to mention the Apple bluetooth headset really SUCKS!! I tried 2 of them and they both sucked very bad.

With the 3G w/ 3.1.2 or 3.1.3, the BT speaker phone from Blueant S1, would sometimes not connect, for example before I leave the car, it would be connected, and after 8 hrs, I return, sometimes it will not connect. I was also getting this occassional issue on the iPhone 4.

I have not tried the iOS4.1 yet, waiting for firmer news on a JB.

  • My issue was fixed too. I can finally change tracks via Bluetooth 😛 heh

  • Vicseadog

Yes, it did fix my issues with BT

  • Yep. Apple addressed it.
it might not be as fast as 3.X but it’s lot better then 4.0 ^_^

  • panda

I still can’t seem to maintain a bluetooth connection. I am pretty sure I updated when prompted by iTunes, but when I go to my iPhone and look at Settings/General/About it shows that the Version is 4.0.2. Is this the ios, and if so I wonder why it doesn’t show the one I just updated to?

    iPhone4 / iOS4.1 / Sony DR-BT140Q…. iOS 4.1 *Removed* my AVRCP Support..

After upgrading from iOS 4.0 to 4.1 I lost the ability to Play/Pause. Now I have no bluetooth controls..

    Ain’t that special, Thanks Apple!

  • Mrmozart

Well my girlfriend usually buys stuff for me…. I only got her a rose from my friend’s garden few years ago… Last month she bought me Jawbone…. play it good

  • Stephenh

WOW…. I forgot to try it. It now works perfectly with my Jabra Dogtag Stereo Bluetooth! All the buttons work and voice control as well! I’m happy!

  • netskipper

it fixed my iphone 4 sync ability with my car (ford’s microsoft sync has trouble with iphones from beginning days when it is introduced)lol, it no longer auto play music via bluetooth audio anymore… yahoo 🙂

i have to try the USB connections later on

  • Mr. Mac

I have the iP4, iOS 4.1 and Sony DR-BT140Q and everything finally works now – play, pause, forward, back, voice control and it seems to be working with a phone call but I it was already working with that before though the results were on and off before and I’ve only tried it for one call so far.
Sadly, it doesn’t work with Skype or Fring. They don’t seem to offer the blutetooth audio option.
Did you try ‘forget this device’ on the iP4 and then adding it again?

  • That happen to me once, Restarted my phone, Everything worked again. have you restarted?

  • Per Thelle

Hello from Norway. No, the new iOS4.1 did not fix the bluetooth problem with my car system (BMW 07)

  • JfromK

Well.. I have used “Forget this device” I have restarted my phone and re-paired my headphones multiple times. I guess everyone in iPhone world just knows how to “reboot” or “reset” their phone. I came from Blackberry world where you do a battery pull for that. Once someone finally instructed me to press power and home at the same time to restart the phone, not just power it off and back on again everything started working after re-pairing again.

Are there any known issues with bt and 3GS on iOS 4.0.x? I have a Sony Ericsson bt and every since updating os I’ve noticed crackling, volume issues, and poor sound quality. Don’t know if this is cuz my bt headset is dying or if it’s the os that needs updating.

  • Glad you got it going. As iphone owners we do know what works lol, have to go with it.
Iphones are little computers, the do need to be restarted once in a while, just like computers ^_~
its natural. Glad you got it working, cheers.

  • DreamLand

I am able to change tracks pause and play via blue tooth from my 2010 Mazdaspeed 🙂 love it!!

  • Lebody

I’m still having the same bluetooth issues I had before the upgrade.

  • James H

I’m dissapointed with Apple’s AVRCP implementation. My songs still don’t show up on my Mazda screen through Bluetooth.

  • James00

Anyone here using a blueant Q1 headset? And if so, has it fixed the sound quality problem??

  • Turbinedoc

NO, my plantronics headsets, Discovery and 975, both still do not work. drop calls, recepients can’t understand the wratcheting and garbled voice, distance works for about four feet if you are lucky. what a poor performer!

  • I have the same setup. The only issues I have started with my last phone and OS 3.1.3. I will often get a lot of audio dropouts when the 3G radio or WiFi are having problems connecting. I reported this to Apple about 3 months ago through my local store.

The audio doesn’t appear to be lost, just delayed by up to a second.

  • Ad5ez

It never fixed the disconnect/reconnect bluetooth issue, nor the muffled thing.

  • Kevin_CA

    Here, iP4, iOS 4.1, Garmin 3760t and Plantronics BlackBeat903.

The bluetooth only allows me doing the play music and picking up the calls on my BB903. It doesn’t pause the music nor play next/previous tracks.

Voice becomes terrible to recepients and drops.

Having disconnect/reconnect bluetooth issue all the time.

  • Jfwilburn

    nope still crap

  • rakeshg

I have the same issue with my Infinit M35 (after upgrading to iOS 4.0). 3GS with 3.1.2 worked fine – now it does not “see” the bluetooth in the car just about every other time. Turning bluetooth off and on again on the phone appears to fix the issue but it’s a pain.

  • Marco

No. iOS 4.1 did not fix my iPhone 4 Bluetooth problem. My problem was and still is, the need to re-pair the iPhone with my car’s bluetooth every time I leave the car. I did not have this problem with my previous 3GS (iOS 4.0.1)

  • David

Still having BT problems galore. It is unusable. 4.1 didn’t fix jack for me.

  • Dvdsmith_97

While I thought 4.1 had fixed my Bluetooth issues it didn’t. I still get reports from callers that I sound like darth vader or that they are catching every other word. I did app updates in the morning that may have caused the issue to come back. Just did a restart to see of rebooting helps.

In short, I’m losing my confidence in Apple’s ability to regression test and keep the most important features whole while adding new functionality.

  • Raiz

since i have updated to os4.1 my blutooth headsets now keep losing conection .when listening to music and calls i am only getting every other word .but if i stand still it sems to be better .is there a way of going back to os 4.0 as that worked fine .

  • Tixits

4.0.2 worked with all my devices without a hitch…. 4.1 killed my ability to use my handsfree car speaker( motorola t505 ) for phone calls. It still connects to the phone, and still plays my music, but doesn’t respond to voice commands, and doesn’t transfer any call audio through the device. Really upsetting as I drive a lot and hate ear pieces.

  • Peterlinke

It did not fix my problem. Apparently I still sound muffled in 50% of my calls. Extremely frustrating and it doesn’t matter which BT device I use. Will migrate back to 3GS tomorrow.

  • Infamous

I am having major problems with bluetooth on my new iPhone 4. I upgraded to 4.1 and was really hoping it would fix the issues but in fact things have gotten worse. I have constant audio drop outs while listening to music on the phone or through apps like Pandora. The audio drops out every few seconds. It’s rather annoying and makes listening to music via bluetooth undesirable. Not only that but after the 4.1 upgrade I have to keep reconnecting the iPhone to my car radio. It somehow now disconnects when I turn off the car. I really hope Apple releases another update really soon to fix this problem. I had a few drop outs with my old 3G but nothing this bad. It’s horrible!!

  • Jordan

Nope, still can’t keep my phone paired with my ’09 Saab after the ignition is turned off.

My friend and I own numerous Bluetooth from Motorola, Jawbone 2, Jabra Extreme…; never had any issue when we were both using iPhone 3G. When my friend got the Iphone 4 with IOS4.01 in late August, we immediately noticed there was a drop in sound quality coming from iphone 4. The voice from iphone 4 always sounded muffled with static interference especially outside in a public area. After upgraded to 4.1, it got worst that one must carry iphone 4 close to the ear piece in order for the other party to be able to hear the conversation. Then I got my iphone 4 with IOS 4.1 just days ago and now we both experience the same issue. Very short bluetooth range between Phone and ear piece(I used to be able to leave my iphone 3G in my bedroom whilst able to make or receive calls from my motorola Bluetooth downstairs in the kitchen. With iphone 4, the moment I walk out of the bedroom, I already lost the bluetooth signal.) Have tried out all 6 models of our bluetooth with the same result. Have spoken with Apple Genius Bar, the staff was not able to help but said hope the next update ios4.2 would fix the problem. I personally think this is more of a hardware design issue than sofware.

i still have the same problem with my macbook pro. Apple sucks

  • Thejugglingguy

NO! 4.1 update did not fix my bluetooth issues. In fact, the 4.1 update to my iPhone 4 completely disabled connectivity to my pioneer cd-btb200 (attached to AVIC-D3). My wife’s iphone 4 running 4.0 can still connect to my btb200 so I know my btb200 is not the problem. What the hell? Called apple support and they told me that Pioneer needs to update the firmware in the btb200… yeah…. good luck with that. I asked Apple support if I could roll my phone back to 4.0 and they said not without jailbreaking it. Great 🙁

  • MJ

Just installed iOS 4.2, Beta, did not correct Bluetooth pairing issue.

  • Wiz4646

Dateline October 14, 2010. I also have an iPhone 4 that was purchased from AT&T about October 1st of 2010. I am running iOS 4.1. I was having no call connectivity issues but I was having all the same issues with the bluetooth that are mentioned here. Headsets (I also tried several) would pair and connect only to begin continually disconnecting and re-connecting and I could usually hear my callers but they said I was breaking up or they just couldn’t understand me.
Someone in one of the articles I read mentioned rebooting the phone.
In case you don’t know, rebooting isn’t the same as turning the phone off and on. To reboot you hold down the power button and the home button at the same time. When the power down slider appears, power down. Power back up like normal. I, with nothing to lose, tried this. My bluetooth now seems to be working perfectly. Even better than it did with my 3G phone. I am experiencing no more disconnects and my callers have quit complaining. Admittedly, I have just done this a few hours ago but it seems all is well.

    Hope this helps.

  • Ron

    No it did not.

I received an iPhone 4 replacement last weekend and it has the same problem.

Put it on my picket when jogging and music is every other word.

My friends and business associates hate when I use an earpiece. I have jawbone icon, SD 510 and plantronics 975.

They al exhibit the same problem.

I have no choice but to take it back change carriers after 15 years with at & t and get an Android phone.

If Apple would simply man up admit the problem and advise of a fix date tt would be different but it appears their success had caused them to give a shit about their customers.

I am getting rid of this technopig this weekend and so are 2 of my friends with the same problem.

It seems that is the only way Apple ” will get it”

  • Velocityboy

Just called in an issue to apple for the exact same thing.
CD-BTB200 with an Iphone running iOS4.1, bluetooth handsfree profile does not work, but worked at 4.0.
But wife’s Iphone 3G which is running iOS4.01 works fine, as does my blackberry storm 2, so not an issue with Pioneer module.
They pretty much told me the same thing, have pioneer update the software, which is not possible, since there is no update port on the BT module. I suggested that since it works fine for the old software and other devices and that they broke their software, they should create the fix. They then told me to also create feed back on http://www.apple.comfeedback on the issue and that hopefully if enought people complain that they might be able to look at it.

After my incident with roaming (or lack there for of) over seas and now being forced to “just deal with it” for the buggy BT profile in iOS 4.1, jailbreaking is starting to look really good.

Good luck – hope we can see a fix soon!

  • VanCanMan

No. I’m not into those dorky space-man ear pieces, but just wanted to try out pairing with my wireless keyboard and my iPhone 4 just doesn’t pair with anything.

  • Compfixer

HA! Will Bluetooth EVER work on the IP4??? Apple will be sending my 7th… yes, 7th replacement this week… each one had a different problem, seems like bluetooth was always a pain, last one had a temperature warning, another had the home button that would stick, latest one is getting no sim issues, and really poor battery life, and the bluettoth constantly disconnects!

7th time is the charm :p

  • Jbk6039

Did. Not fix it. My 3GS paired with no problem but upgrade to 4.2 destroyed bluetooth

  • Laderbuilt

No it did not fix my Bluetooth issues. I still drop my Bluetooth connection still has poor reception peoe are co stately telling me I sound like a weak radio signal. I have about had it with this problem with the iPhone 4 I have spent money on five different headsets all with no luck but a 10$ pair of plug in headphones with mic work the best go fig. Apple it’s time to nut up and fix the issues or I will have to try out the new droid phones I hear they kick ass

  • Sgt. Sagara

No, it didn’t fix my bluetooth 🙁

  • Jorge

It also happens to me – the need to re-pair the iPhone with the car’s bluetooth EVERY time. Have you already managed to solve this problem?

My iPhone 4 Bluetooth disconnects all the time. It never pairs. I have to turn it off and back on several times a day UGH

It is very dissapointing that Apple cannot seem to get this issue fixed. Hopefully with the Iphone 5 they will figure out the problem.
