Dropbox Hits Milestone of 500 Million Users

Since launching back in 2008, Dropbox has announced today it has surpassed 500 million users, a major milestone for the company. Dropbox makes it really easy to share files with each other, and they state to date, users have made 3.3 billion connections, while seeing over 50% growth in the last year alone:

Since we started, Dropbox users have created 3.3 billion connections by sharing with each other. That’s a 51% jump in just the last year. And as new people join, they’re bringing friends, family, and co-workers along. 44% of new accounts were opened when existing users introduced people to Dropbox. That’s making for an even more creative and collaborative community.

Below is an infographic the company has shared, detailing what 500 million users looks like:

What, no love for Canadian cities in the infographic?

Shortly after launching, in December 2009, late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs made a “nine-digit” offer to acquire the startup, noted Dropbox founder Drew Houston, who refused the offer as he explained he wanted to create a huge company.

Jobs tried a second attempt to meet up with Houston to talk acquisition, but was again declined. Houston never heard from Jobs again, and Apple eventually launched iCloud with iOS 5 in 2011.
