Google Maps Web App to Get Street View on Thursday

Earlier it was reported by the NYT that Google Street View would make its way to the Google Maps web app in two weeks, which numerous iOS users have been using for transit directions. Apple CEO recommended the latter within his apology letter for Apple Maps.

Now, AllThingsD points us to Walt Mossberg’s Google Maps for Android review where he reveals Google Street View will be coming to the web app this Thursday:

Google plans to announce on Thursday that it is adding its popular Street View feature, missing from Apple’s maps, to the Web version of Google Maps accessed from the iPhone and iPad. I tested this addition, which displays 360-degree photographic street views of selected locations, and interior photographic views of certain businesses, using sample links Google sent me. These links worked well, allowing me to see the locations and pan around with a finger.

So there you have it. Mark your calendars for this Thursday–Google Street View will make its way back to iOS. This feature was a widely by iPhone and iPad users for quickly previewing street addresses and directions. Who’s excited for this?

    Not Me!

Not a fan of using the google web app and rarely ever used street view on my phone before.

Honestly, I’m finding very few problems with Apple Maps. It’s not perfect but I definitely think its been overblown.

Me! It’s handy for commuters like me.

After spending some time with the IOS maps app, I’m not missing google maps nearly as much as i thought I would. Still, having access to street view for the occasional use is welcome as well, but I don’t see myself going back to google maps as my regular navigation app.

  • I’ll be honest… the street view feature on iOS was so buried and unintuitive that I had to actually look up how to do it. I didn’t use it long enough to miss it.

I was not a fan of the google maps web version for the IOS it lacked too much information from the full blown web version and was unintuitive. However I definitely liked the built in Google Maps app from IOS5. If the web version of Google Maps has the same look and feel as the prior built in app I will definitely be using it as my main map app if I decide to go to IOS6. Having Streetview back is great, I may actually upgrade(downgrade?) my 4S to IOS6 once I verify the results on some other guinea pig phones 🙂

As far as the Apple Maps app, it is a total crap shoot on where you live as to how bad it will be.
