Spotify Sunsets its Controversial Disco Ball App Icon

Weeks following the debut of its shiny yet controversial disco ball app icon, Spotify has finally kept its word and reverted to the original 2D logo.
Spotify has pushed out an update on iOS to revert its app logo back to the traditional look that many users associate with the company. The update is now rolling out and can be installed on an iPhone.
In May, Spotify introduced its disco ball app icon as a temporary replacement, made to celebrate the company’s 20th anniversary. Updated for iOS and Android devices, the new logo replaced the Spotify app’s standardized look. Following its debut, many users voiced their disdain for the new look. And so, Spotify promised that the new icon would only be temporary and the refresh would only last a few weeks.
Spotify’s makeover is largely tied to the launch of its ‘Spotify 20: Your Party of the Year(s)’ in-app experience. Much like Spotify Wrapped, the 20th-anniversary mobile-only experience takes users through their listening habits over the years, highlighting the most-listened-to songs, artists, and more. With the launch of Spotify 20: Your Party of the Year(s), the company rolled out the red carpet for the disco ball app, though it was always meant to be a temporary change.
Despite Spotify’s best efforts to use the cosmetic change as a celebration of its milestone, this entire endeavour goes to show that audiences can be sensitive about changes associated with companies and services they often use. Spotify, unfortunately, had to learn through trial and error.
