Instagram Introduces New Look, Colourful Icon

A new Instagram update is waiting for you on the App Store: The photo-sharing platform has reinvented its design and is introducing a new look. What you’ll see is an updated icon and app design.

The new icon is purple, yellow, orange, and pink and represents a simpler camera, but the rainbow you were used to in the old icon “lives on in gradient form”, the company says in a blog post announcing the new look.

Instagram’s design refresh is aimed at better reflecting the changes it has undergone during its five-year history.

“When Instagram was founded over five years ago, it was a place for you to easily edit and share photos. Over those five years, things have changed,” says Ian Spalter, Instagram’s Head of Design. “Instagram is now a diverse community of interests where people are sharing more photos and videos than ever before, using new tools like Boomerang and Layout, and connecting in new ways through Explore.”

The design changes will become obvious as you open the app: The blue and white you were used to in the previous version has been removed, and now Instagram features a new black-and-white design focused on the pictures you take instead of the design elements of the app.

Overall, as noted by TechCrunch, nothing has been fundamentally changed regarding the app’s workflow. However, there are some tiny under-the-hood changes: The app uses standard iOS components, fonts, and patterns. Instagram has just become a better, lighter app. See for yourself!
