iPhone and iPad to Lose the Home Button on Future Models?

With the release of iOS 4.3beta1, some details about future features and hardware changes for iOS devices have been uncovered in the iOS 4.3 code. BGR is reporting that the discovery of new multigestures in the iPad firmware, suggests that Apple is moving towards getting rid of the home button.

Here’s what BGR reported:

We just got some pretty wild information from one of our Apple sources and while it’s hard to believe at first, it does make sense. We have exclusively been told that the reason Apple just added multitouch gestures for the iPad in the latest iOS 4.3 beta is because the iPad will be losing the home button. Yes, we are told that Apple, at some point in time, will remove the home button from the iPad’s design. Instead of button taps, you will use new multitouch gestures to navigate to the home screen and also to launch the app switcher.

That’s not all, however. In addition to the home button disappearing from the iPad, we’re told that this change will make its way over to the iPhone as well. Our source said Apple employees are already testing iPads and iPhones with no home buttons on the Apple campus, and it’s possible we will see this new change materialize with the next-generation iPad and iPhone devices set to launch this year.

This would be a huge departure and really changed how we interact with our iDevices. Do you think this is a good idea?

Pretty cool if it’s true. It means we’ll get a bigger screen without having to have a bigger device as well. Huge plus to me.

now all we need is it to be left in a bar 😛

This doesn’t make much sense, especially on the iPhone. How would we be supposed to access the home screen on the iPhone when holding it with one hand?

  • I’m not against it, but I will be if I can’t reset or take screenshots of my devices.

Horrible move. Some article have claimed that a five-finger pinch is how you’d get back to the home screen. Guess that excludes anyone who doesn’t have all five/ten digits…

  • Personally, I would hate to see the home button gone. It has become such an iconic part of the iOS devices. I like the home button, and how it functions.

    I dislike this idea

That would actually be my concern. I lost all my fingers to Frostbite and have three toes that were transferred to my left hand to work with. My main reason for buying the iPhone in the first place was how easily I could operate it. Multitouch controls would be a BIG problem for me.

A touch sensitive home button, or a redesigned wider and fatter home button would be better than removing it completely.

  • Without the home button, could we see 4 inch screens on the iphone?

Don’t think of your iPhone before multitasking. Think of the amount of times you press that button. Then try to think how long that button will hold up to that kind of abuse. Apple is making the right decision. And it will benefit all that use an iPad or iPhone and iPod.

I’d rather see the home button moved to the top, where the headphone jack is, if it would get me a 16:9 screen.

it would be nice to se the actually button removed, and replace it was some sort of touch sensitive button instead

that is exactly the first thing I said too. I use my iphone mainly with one hand. using five fingers to just go back to home screen wouldn’t be good. that mean I would have to sue both hands. when I lay on my couch I never use two hands for the phone lol. I guess if they use touch button would be better than nothing but ya it would suck to see the home button go 🙁

A longer screen but not larger. No point. The image would be cut out unless they made it bigger. 😉

    I totally agree with this.
