Samsung today unveiled its new Gear S3 smartwatch in Berlin, Germany, featuring a bigger, 1.3-inch 360×360 display, an optional LTE version, the addition of MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) technology for Samsung Pay, a speaker and microphone for calls, GPS, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and a barometer. The watch is being offered in two designs: classic and frontier, the former with stainless steel has a polished silver look, while the latter has matte black sporty finish.

“With the Gear S3, we continue to build on our wearables heritage of offering diverse choices to enhance consumers’ unique lifestyles,” said Younghee Lee, Executive Vice President of Global Marketing and Wearable Business, Mobile Communications Business at Samsung Electronics. “Samsung Gear S2 achieved meaningful progress in the smartwatch category with a personalized watch face and a versatile rotating bezel that provided an intuitive smartwatch experience. Now with the new Gear S3, we expand our Gear collection and introduce not only a great smartwatch, but a great watch. With smart capabilities and sophisticated, elegant design, the Gear S3 marks a significant addition to our smartwatch portfolio.”

The case size of the new Gear S3 has grown from 44mm to 46mm, which is quite huge (compare that to the Apple Watch, which comes in 38mm and 42mm sizes). In terms of specs, the S3 has a dual-core 1GHz Exynos chipset, 786MB of RAM, 4GB of storage, and a 380mAh battery.

The watch is IP68 rated for water and dust protection. It also features Corning’s new Gorilla Glass SR+ for the cover, a new formula that Corning says is specifically aimed at wearable devices.Samsung has not yet announced the pricing, but has said it will be released before the end of the year.

Update: Samsung confirmed to SamMobile this Gear S3 will work with the iPhone.

    They look really good.

9to5 is reporting they will work with iOS

But how much will it work? Usually with any watch that isn’t the apple watch isn’t there limited functionality?

  • FragilityG4

There in lies the question. We will have to see but one thing is for sure to me, I like the look better than the Apple Watch

I would think the LTE version probably has pretty full functionality regardless of which phone you’re pairing it with. iOS and Android compatibility is a very nice feature so that you don’t have to abandon your smart watch should you choose to change to a different phone OS. And as you say, these do look really sharp as well.
