How to: Add Music to your iPhone with iTunes

**Are you a new visitor? Click here to read my Top Posts to begin your iPhone journey!**

Sometimes you get caught up with all the other amazing features of the iPhone (think Safari and the abundant supply of 3rd party applications), you forget that it’s also an iPod! Well, if you have just purchased an iPhone, then adding music and syncing your songs from iTunes will be on your priority list.

However, the process is a little different with the iPhone. You can’t drag and drop songs directly to your iPhone within iTunes, like you normally would with your iPod. You need to create a playlist, then sync that playlist with your iPhone. I would hope in the future that Apple will install an update so we can just drag and drop songs, rather than go through the following steps.

Let’s take a brief overview of what is required to add music to your iPhone! If you already know how to do this, great–if not, continue reading!

How to Add Music to your iPhone with iTunes

Step 1: Launch iTunes and plug in your iPhone.

Step 2: Create a new “playlist” in iTunes. Name it whatever you want–say, “My iPhone Playlist” or something like that.

Step 3: Drag the songs you want from your iTunes library to your new playlist–in this case, “My iPhone Playlist”

Step 4: Click on your iPhone and go to the Music tab. “Sync Music” should already be checked. Now click on the button “Selected playlists”, then tick off “My iPhone Playlist” (or whatever your playlist is named).

Step 5. Sync your iPhone and when it’s done, the songs from “My iPhone Playlist” should now be on your iPhone. If you want to make any changes to your mp3 library on your iPhone, you’ll have to modify the songs within your playlist, then re-sync again. Yes, I know it can be a pain.

If you know of an easier method to add music to your iPhone, please let me know! If this tutorial has worked for you, let me know in the comments! =)

actually, apple fixed that a couple of months ago in a 7.6 update to iTunes. the checkbox for managing your own music and movies is now available from the summary tab of your iPhone in iTunes, just like any other iPod. and you just needed to upgrade iTunes, not the iPhone firmware.

Yah… I have no trouble adding songs. I don’t need to make playlists or anything… I just connect my iPhone, and it adds all my songs automatically…

I choose to manually manage my music on my iPhone. With this option, when I connect my iPhone to my computer, open iTunes and drag any music and videos I want to the iPhone and it directly adds it.

You open itunes and plug in your iphone
click on the iphone device in itunes
when the page opens click on the “music” tab on the top menu
And tick the sync button
You can add all, or selected

where the hell is the “Sync Music” button?

I have created a playlist, imported some .mp3´s into it, but it seems impossible to copy the damn thing into the actual phone!?

What do you do if clicking on “iphone” under devices does not open the page with the “music” tab on it? Itunes is recognising my phone, but when I click on it, the page just goes blank.

The best way is to create a playlist as described by Gary Ng, then click “on this iPhone” scroll to the bottom and select your playlist from the drop down menu “autofill from” then hit autofill. everything on that playlist is now on your phone, no sync required saving you the hassle if erased data.
