Thoughts After Updating to Firmware 1.1.4

You’ve probably read my post about updating my iPhone firmware from 1.1.1 to 1.1.4. I’ve received a lot of emails and questions asked by readers regarding this update. I thought I’d take some time to reflect on how 1.1.4 has been since I upgraded.

Here are some random musings I’ve noticed:

  • The iPhone is responding MUCH faster than before; previously there would be lag when typing keystrokes at times
  • Battery life has been improved big time. Before my battery meter would go to about 50% by the time nightfall came. Now, my battery meter hardly even changes if I do not use the iPhone (EG, when the phone is on standby during work)
  • Increased stability: I no longer get random crashes with Safari…much better
  • 3rd party apps: I have flashlight, iSolitaire, MxTube, PocketGuitar, iPhysics, Compass, Drummer, and Summerboard installed with no problems. Screenshot does not work–doh! I loved that program.
  • I haven’t had any problems with “email” issues I’ve been emailed about. So far everything has worked. My theory is that by going the “restore” route instead of “update”, that has helped avoid any problems in the end.
  • iPhoneRingToneMaker is not supported on 1.1.4–I just forgot to check for updates, silly me!; however I will be posting later on how to put ringtones on your iPhone using iTunes 7.6 a bit later–stay tuned!
  • The time on my iPhone is not correct when the setting “Set Automatically” is turned ON. It does not take into account DST. So right now I just switched it to OFF and the time is correct. It could have to do with Rogers or my iPhone. We’ll never know!

When I was on 1.1.1, Summerboard would result in an unstable user experience when I was browsing with Safari. So far 1.1.4 has been rock solid with Summerboard installed. However, I have noticed that when I install certain SMB themes, they don’t appear in SMB–what gives?

Regarding the updating process, I did have my AT&T SIM card inside the iPhone at the time. However, this is not necessary as iPhone in Canada reader, Sarns, was able to complete the process without a SIM inserted. Once ZiPhone 2.5c had done its job, I just removed the AT&T SIM and popped back in my Rogers SIM. Hopes this clarifies the process for some of you.

I had a user email me to ask if the update was as easy as it looked in the video. The answer to that is YES! I documented every second it took, from the time I updated to the time I unlocked. So there is no question that if you are thinking about updating, the evidence is there. It’s up to what you feel comfortable with doing! Don’t want to mess around? Then don’t bother…leave your iPhone the way it is.

All in all, the upgrade definitely was worth it for me. I am glad that I finally updated. Cheers to everyone for their support! Thanks to Cam, Sandra, and Chris for the beer and lattes! 😉

I noticed this problem as well after the spring jump on clock. Live in Vancouver. I turn my phone off at night. When you turn it on, if you do not have a wifi connection, and it connects directly to edge the time is correct using the auto feature. And stays okay from then on. But if you turn it on and it connects directly to wifi the time is off and you have to disable the auto feature to correct it. Or if you leave the wifi connection and pick up edge, the clock does correct itself if you toggle the auto feature on and off. Don’t know if this is the phone after update to 1.1.4 or when on wifi the edge is not being picked up enough to correctly display the clock. I suspect it is the phone but not sure.

Thanks, I installed the fix after reading about it but it shows the themes now, but doesn’t apply them. Weird. I will stick with Neurox Leopard.

regarding the time issue…i had the same problem as well and i was forced to set it manually. however on sunday night, i powered off the iphone and turned it back on on monday and decided to play with the time settings again. and lo and behold, when i changed it back to automatic, the time was correct. Perhaps it took some time and a reset for the iphone to detect the time change from the network??

Confirmed!!!

This works 1000% as advertised.

Left my fido SIM card in the phone and tried the procedure.
About 10 minutes and voila you have 1.1.4

This is the best iphone site there is. Bravo on a job well done!

Cheers from Mississauga

i jumped into 1.1.4 from 1.1.3 with no help needed, well aside from ziphone (god bless). Zero problems so far, not gonna get to deep into detail but it seems to be an improvement from 1.1.3, customize was a bit tricky to get going, other then that alls i gotta say is easy day, can;t wait for the next update

I followed the instructions on this site to upgrade from 1.0.2 and everything worked great. My Iphone has never worked better. The only issue I’ve seen is that now it won’t recognise the docking station that came with my Apple Bluetooth Earpiece. It gives me the usualy “This accessory may not be compatible with the Iphone….would you like to turn on airplane mode” and it won’t charge or pair the earpiece with the Iphone. Has anyone else noticed this?

I have exactly the same problem with the Apple docking station but on my phone it was there before the 1.1.4 update (with 1.1.1). I’d also like to know if this annoyance can be fixed somehow.

Well I also bit the bullet and update to 1.1.4 from 1.1.2 otb using a Stealth Sim.
I reinstalled the AT&T sim before I began and I also ran iErase 3.9
in Ziphone first. ( not sure why but what ever) as soon as the iErase was done I had no
wifi. I did have some issues when I first started. I tried to update via a downloaded 1.1.4 file
using the option click restore on Mac, but the phone locked and iTunes was not happy.
I then got nervous so I set the phone to never sleep and hit restore in iTunes and let itunes download the file and do the update. This worked no trouble.
After it reset (just like in iPhone Fan’s video) I run “do it all” in Ziphone and that was it… done.
I reinstalled the Rogers sim leaving out the stealth sim and thats it… works.
I did see that the Rogers rolling logo in the top left corner now displays “CANADA Rogers Inc.”
Never said that with the Stealth installed. It use to just say Rogers.

Thanks iPhone Fan and this site!!

Just did the update from my 1.1.3 OTB ZiPhone’d iPhone to 1.1.4. One thing to mention is that when you update the firmware to 1.1.4 without doing a restore in iTunes with the AT&T SIM in, iTunes won’t allow you to do a restore until you kick the iPhone into recovery mode. After that, no problem unlocking it again with ZiPhone 2.5c. Just a heads up in case anyone takes this approach.

i upgraded from 1.1.3 to 1.1.4 last night, the first time, the mail program kept crashing, used ziphone to put it in dfu mode, restored, ziphone again, and everything is back to normal.

I had the same problem. My mail would crash. So I did the whole 1.1.4 upgrade process over again but made sure not to restore my previous settings back on the iPhone. This resolved the issue. You can still sync all your contacts and calender events and what not back on through iTunes, just don’t restore your old settings.

Ok, so here is my biggest issue. Why doesn’t the iPhone get voicemail notifications? Has anyone been able to fix this on 1.1.4? I would love to hear what people have to say, also if I’m asking a stupid question, I’m sorry. Please do guide me in the right direction.

I keep seeing this as an issue with people but when I get a voicemail I get that red dot on my voicemail icon and I also get a textmessage notifying me of a new voicemail.

Wow, so beyond me… I’m with Rogers, I have the Who Called feature which sends me text messages from +8888 when I miss a call to notify me the number of the person who called and the time the call came in. So I receive these +8888 messages fine. As far as voicemail I get neither the red dot or text messages. I just upgraded to 1.1.4 last night but I was having this problem when I was at 1.1.3. No one seems to know what to do.

Hey guys, Im just a little confused reading the posts here. I used ziphone on my 1.1.3 OTB and it worked well, but iTunes keeps asking me to update to 1.1.4. Am I supposed to do this or do I use Ziphone again to update? Thanks for any help in pointing me in the right direction, as i really new to cell phone “tampering” haha.
