Petition Rogers to Consider Early Upgrades for iPhone 3GS

Did you just read our Rogers/Fido iPhone 3GS Upgrade Policy Guide? The following post might be of interest to you!

Right now if you’re looking to upgrade to the iPhone 3GS from the iPhone 3G, you are in for a bit of a wait like we posted earlier. Rogers recently changed their smartphone hardware upgrade (HUP) policy which directly affects current iPhone 3G owners looking to upgrade to the 3GS.

Rogers has stated that they will be offering “no-contract” prices for the iPhone 3GS. But one begs the question, “why not let us upgrade now?” That’s a great question and we’d love to have Rogers address some of our concerns.

Petitions to Bring Forward the Message of Early iPhone 3GS Upgrades

It’s now YOUR turn to get your voice heard. Let Rogers know how you feel about their existing hardware upgrade policy. We have created two online petitions for you to sign:

1) Click here to visit the twitter petition via Twitition.
ishot-138

2) Not on twitter? Click here to sign this regular online petition.

Can petitions bring change? Yes they can, if you take a look back in time. Our participation and involvement last year helped raise awareness regarding Rogers iPhone data plans/pricing. Make your voice heard and sign the petitions today!

So… You mean Rogers is treating the iPhone like any other phone?!?!? I upgraded a Blackberry, ten wanted a different one a year later. Same deal – wasn’t eligible.

This is just like the whiny folks in the the US and the UK moaning that they aren’t getting a subsidy on their upgrades either.

Yes, upgrading would cause a new 3-year contract, but the original subsidy was designed to be paid back over two years. If you re-sign at the one-year mark and get another full subsidy, they lose out on a year of subsidy recovery. And what happens if another new iPhone comes out in a year? Do they get to lose out on more?

Or maybe you decide in 4 months when/if Rogers gets a different phone that you now qualify for the fully subsidized price on that one, too?

Grow up.

Grow up? Actually, if you informed yourself about the history here first, you’d realize that Rogers changed the hardware upgrade period from 1 year to 2 years. This basically makes it so everyone who got the 3G on launch day (or near there) would theoretically have to wait 2 years (as in, a whole year from now) to upgrade to a new phone. 2 years in the tech industry is a VERY LONG TIME, and an unreasonable change that Rogers forced on customers without them agreeing to it (I never agreed to that upgrade period in my contract, nor did I agree to that change in terms). 😛

Please see this https://www.iphoneincanada.ca/iphone-rogers/bad-news-rogers-extends-hup-from-12-to-24-months/ where Rogers doubled the HUP eligibility period back in March. Therefore, “Customers may have been eligible and now eligibility has been pushed out as a result of the update.” Like anyone who purchased a launch-day iPhone 3G in Canada. Thanks for raping Canadian buyers once again, Rogers! ^_^

I also think it is unfair that (from an ethical prospective) Rogers breached our contract in March 2009 by unilaterally changing the terms of upgrade. I feel that from an ethical perspective the 24 month period should only apply if I sign a new contract agreeing to it.
Ofcourse from a legal perspective – I realize that Rogers reserves the right to change the agreement on a whim. Such a move is legal and unethical.

I can only hope & pray for the day that another cell phone provider with a GSM network comes to Canada.
When that happens I’ll be taking my cell number over to them in a heartbeat!!!
I’ve been with Rogers for over 9 years and absolutely hate their company and all the bullshit associated with being one of their customers.
They have made $1000’s of dollars from me over the years yet refuse to offer the discounted rate on the new iPhone for being such a loyal customer BUT will offer it only to new customers with NO account history with them!!!???? – this makes no sense at all from a business perspective!
A company should want to retain and do whatever necessary to make their long term “faithful” customers stay with them.
Oooooooh I just pray for the day when a new kid moves on the block offering a GSM network and really values their customers! And when that day comes I’ll be moving over to them and as I leave I’ll make one final call into Rogers Customer Service telling them to go fuck themselves!!!

The End……

Not sure if this might be related. I’ve been getting “rogered” for a while now too. I’ve been having service issues which amounts to my love of keeping windows 98 alive. it amounts to resetting network settings and praying… joys.
But the point is.. in my battle for service. I have been finding for about the last 5 wks, a new and strange carrier signature. “302880” I didn’t find much, but “880” is listed as a carrier call sign. “302” remains a mystery to me. But my phone is kind of bogusy these days, and it’s my 3rd iphone in 8 mnths, one sucked by my hand, got a nice warranty replacement with a whistle or too… yay apple store, then their replacement sucked an ear speaker… so third one was a charm.
On the upgrade question. I’d like to know that after 12 mnths… I’d have an option to even consider a now more tested swiss army knife version of something I would really use to it’s fullest. an iphone. For all the BS service issues, which have been a lowish percentage for me. But extremely frustrating when it does fall to the wayside and stay that way for a bit. I need a phone you roger suck holes!!! Replace it or let me out. without cancellation.

I wouldn’t expect a fully subsidized phone when I’m only finishing up the 1st year of a 3 year contract. What I would like to see Rogers do for us is this:

At or After the one year mark we can upgrade to a “partially” subsidized phone ($399 for the 32GB) and resign for 3 years (ie start a 3 year contract over again).

I think that is a fair trade off since you haven’t paid back the first subsidized phone until you hit the 2 year mark so you should pay a bit more. But I think going more than $100 when you are willing to “extend” your contract would be asking too much.

I completely agree. We’re not asking for full subsidy from you Rogers, meeting in the middle would be just fine! It makes no sense why they would go change their policy all of a sudden like this. It’s like Rogers does this shit on purpose just to piss everyone off. Why would they not want to capitalize on the tech crowd that wants to upgrade every year? Doing what Snowman suggested would create a scenario where everyone wins… but that’s the problem with Rogers, only THEY want to win.

Kris

I don’t understan all the hate against Rogers over THIS issue. I don’t want to say it is the same every where. But it is the same deal in the US and parts of Europe. It takes time to repay the subsidy we got on the 3G.
Should we just keep getting the subsidy every year when Apple announced a new iPhone. That is bad business and all the carriers would be losing money.
This has nothing to do with being greedy. It has to do with not losing A LOT of money if everyone got to upgrade at the subsidy price after a year into the 3G contract.
And to everyone that thinks all this will change with a new carrier – come on. Maybe they’ll be able to offer 2 year contracts, but it’ll be the same. It’ll take 2 years to pay off the subsidy prices.
Again, this isn’t just a Rogers trying to be greedy thing.

I think you’re missing the point. The point is that Rogers changed their HUP policy from one year to two years for smart phones just because they felt like it. It’s the inconsistency on Rogers behalf that pisses me off. There is no reason why they couldn’t implement a plan like SnowMan suggested.

Kris

@Hoopie – So how long should it be so that Rogers considers you a loyal customer? 10 years? 5 years? Have I or everyone else who’ve been with them for 1 year and paid our bills on time not been loyal?
Agreed, Rogers has made a lot of money off you, but what make you think a new carrier is going to be any different?
This isn’t just a Rogers thing. It’s the same with all the major carriers.

In this day of the “Refurbished” everything, I would think that a program of “return your old iPhone 3G” would go a long way to recouping any loss that Rogers would face in allowing willing customers to be happy and upgrade to the 3GS. There does not at this time seem to be any interest on the part of Rogers to “Think Outside Of The Box”.

Would apple allow the free iphone 3g to be turn ins to the carriers from the 3GS bandwagon jumpers on? rogers gets a new data plan customer, and didn’t have to cover any hardware cost. Room for refurb?? Is that a way to sweeten the deal and get more value from the higher frequency upgraders?

So you’re complaining that Rogers won’t accept your $400 3 weeks early? I think you’re losing grasp of the big picture. The real problem is that to get an iPhone in Canada, the contract has to be a minimum of 3 years. Create a petition to get that lowered to 1 or 2 years. This petition is pathetic.

The point is Rogers modified the HUP time line for smartphones from 1 year to 2 years. As stated, the message is to spread the news about how Rogers is unable to offer the option of upgrading for those only 1 year into their contract. You’re also more than welcome to start your own petition too! 😉

OK, so where is this 3 year subsidy now that they are dropping the iPhone 3G to $99.00? – Trust me when I say Rogers is STILL making money off a $99 iPhone.
@Kris – I worked in Advertising/Marketing Sales for over 10 years and when we went after “new” clients they always paid slightly more then those clients that were established and loyal to our company. Once those clients established a history with us then they recieved “loyality pricing”.
I think Rogers should handle each customer on a case by case basis. Perhaps based on $$ spent per year.
I “live” off my phone for both personal and business use. On average by Rogers bill is $300/per month however there are months when my bill has been over $500!!!
I have more than repaid that so-called subsidy.
I looked at my cell expenses for 2008 and my Rogers cell bill was over $5200.00.
I am more than deserving of “loyality pricing”

Kris
Kris

@tattooguru – I understand what you are saying. But find me a cell phone company that is offering loyalty dicounts for this iPhone 3GS. I haven’t found any. Not AT&T. Not any of the other carriers. Maybe there are some out there – but it sounds like eveyone is in the same boat.
I think if you start puting people into classes then you are asking for trouble. I too use my cell for almost everything, but I can so it all with my $85 a month contract. Just because I don’t spend hundreds of dollars more a month, that means I’m less loyal of a customer? That’s not right.

TATTOOGURU
TATTOOGURU

@Kris – I agree that everyone is in the same boat and it looks like I will either have to wait another year or purchase one out-right on ebay.
I also agree on what you say about “customer classes” this can be very tricky and troublesome if not done correctly. But it is being done even with Rogers I believe.
Last year (1 month prior to the iPhone release) I purchased a new Blackberry from Rogers. I asked the CSR what price I would be paying as the Blackberry I was looking at had 3 different prices listed on the tag at the Rogers store.
The guy checked my account and told me that I was a “Level 4” customer. I asked the guy what that meant and he said a “Level 4” basically meant that I have spent a lot of $$ with Rogers throughout my 9 year term with them.
Has anyone else heard of this tier system with Rogers????

Yeah this petition is pathetic…someone already said it, but I agree.

Last year, the data issue was completely different. This year, nobody is passionate about the issue. Many people don’t even WANT the new iPhone. You won’t have the numbers like last year to make any change. Besides, like someone else said…the HUP policy is not the problem…it is the 3 year contract to begin with.

Is everyone here sure that their HUP eligibility is in 2010? Mine still says 2009… Didn’t the HUP only affect those starting new contracts? I’m getting the ‘angry mob’ phenomena here… Everyone’s angry because other people are angry and rogers just seems to be the victim of attention. Why is it so important to get the 3gs? Did the 3g not meet your needs these 10 months before apple disclosed info on their new product? This is just consumer mentality. Don’t be angry that rogers is making money from your own character faults. If you MUST have the new iphone then pay the premium. The fact that new and better products come by after your purchase is expected as a consumer when you purchase any product.

For me, I want the new model so I can develop software which uses some of the new hardware- particularly the magnetometer. I can’t develop and test software using it without having the physical device to test on. I know this isn’t going to be a common case, but it’s going to limit my ability to develop for that hardware when I don’t have access to it.

For those of you claiming you purchased a 3G iphone last year and are eligible for HUP are only half right. That means, NO BLACKBERRY, NO HTC, NO IPHONE until at least 2010.

I think it all comes to balance between business’s point of view and customer’s point of view.
Business needs to make profit in order to stay in business. Economy is so bad to a point that so many big companies are closing down.
On the other hands, customers like us want to have cool stuff in the lowest prices possible. People like me have the iPhone 3G for just a year and now wants another one.

Let’s do the math. Someone bought a 16GB iPhone for $299. Non contract price is $750?! Rogers is $450 short. Rogers needs to provide you service which cost money in the first place and now Rogers needs to get that $450 back also.

Remeber the time when we had our phones for 3-5 years and never ask for an upgrade. I think Rogers did make money before. Definitely not now though.

TK
TK

Yes the 3 year contract is bullshit BUT your all missing the bigger picture!!!…

who’s always right here, the consumer or the big canadian corporation that had not considered the big american company would be intending to upgrade an already cool product a year later.
Rogers was more so focused on how many new customers they were going to pull in last year & they did not have there eye on the horizon..NOW WERE AT THE HORIZON, WE THE CUSTOMERS WANT THE LATEST APPLE PRODUCT AND THE SERVICE PROVIDER HERE SAYS NO WE’LL LOSE MONEY, IT’S NOT OUR FAULT AND WE’RE CHANGING AN AGREEMENT IN AN ALREADY SIGNED CONTRACT…A SIGNED CONTRACT!!

HOLY FRIGGIN GOD, Apple please take that surplus of cash around the company and start buying up these greedy companies to offer us the actual service directly from you.

I would say with in a year the money is recovered.
Lets not forget Telus offers unlimited data at $15 per month.. prices at Rogers are

tattooguru you should easily be able to get a new iphone from rogers. the question is whether you really want one this year, cuz they won’t make an exception for you again next year.

guys this whole thread is kind of a joke. petitioning rogers to give you money will not make it so. all carriers monitor howardforums and popular sites but they only respond to cancellations. threaten to cancel or claim warranty and share exactly what you did and what the result was so we can find out how and why rogers is making exceptions. and believe me, they always make exceptions. I have a friend with 2 bolds. he’s a big spender and rogers gave him 2 FREE bolds. rogers is very inconsistent and most of their policies are meant to deter those who don’t know any better

AJ

I believe when it comes to rogers they go with the strategy of us first customers last. I signed for the iphone 3g about a month after it came up. I signed with the impression in a year, if i chose, i could upgrade again to whatever phone i may chose. So for rogers to change this to two years almost 9 months into my contract is b.s. Id bounce and leave rogers but really…no companies are that great in canada. they all want your money.

Mike Brock
Mike Brock

While I was totally on board with the petition last year to get Rogers to bring in some decent data plans at reasonable prices–I think that was a fantastic show of consumer pressure–I’m not really too motivated to get uppity about this.

Rogers 2-year upgrade police for handsets is in-line with Telus, actually. I was a Telus customer for years, and I upgraded a few times with them and was forced to re-sign a 3-year contract to get the subsidized price. I did it, and in the end, had to pay several hundred dollars to escape the contract so I could switch to Rogers to get the iPhone 3G. Oh, well.

I’m not putting down anybody who wants to bite at Rogers ankles again. But their upgrade policy is really in line with the rest of the industry, both domestically and internationally. Whereas with the data plans it was much different–they were way more expensive than the CDMA carriers and the international carriers. So there were serious competitive reasons for Rogers to bow the pressure, considering that Telus and Bell were offering unlimited data for $30/month, etc.

With this issue, Rogers policy isn’t really different at all from the competition, so the threat of flight to the competition is really moot; Rogers will ignore this petition, because it poses no real business risk to them.

I’d like to get the iPhone 3Gs, and I may at some point. And if the new-and-shiny factor does prevail, and I do decide to take the dive, I’ll succumb and extend my contract out another 3 years. Just like I did at Telus. If the competition in the future provides me a fairer shake than Rogers is offering me, I’ll go to the competition. But right now, there’s only one game in town. Rogers knows it, I know it, and you know it.

This petition was dead before it got off the ground.

NEW: Tethering FAQs

What is tethering or wireless modem?
Tethering or wireless modem functionality is the use of your phone (such as your iPhone) as a wireless modem to connect to the internet from your computer. You can connect your phone to your computer through Bluetooth wireless technology or the USB cable provided with your handset.

Can I tether on my iPhone?
To use tethering or wireless modem functionality you require the new iPhone 3G S, or an iPhone 3G that has been upgraded with the new iPhone OS 3.0 software. Until December 31, 2009, if you have subscribed to a data plan which includes at least 1GB of data you may use tethering as part of the volume of data included in your plan at no additional charge. Tethering cannot be used with data plans of less then 1GB.

Will data charges for tethering be free?
No, tethering data usage will come out of your existing data bucket.

When will I be able to tether on my iPhone?
Customers with an iPhone 3G S will be able to tether right away. For customers with an iPhone 3G, who have upgraded to iPhone OS 3.0, we expect tethering to be fully operational for all iPhone customers shortly after the OS 3.0 release.

What will happen on December 31, 2009 when the promotion expires?
Rogers will continue to enable tethering on devices that allow it, but data plans will be adjusted to better reflect the way customers are using tethering services.

How do I tether on my iPhone?
Please visit Apple.com for instructions http://www.apple.com/iphone/iphone-3g/tethering.html

Grow up.
