iPhone 3GS speed test. Toronto to Tampa
I would really love to get the data rate on my new iPhone 3GS to hit 7.2 mbit/s, like Rogers advertises. Unfortunately, the reality is that we’ll never be able to hit that speed as the network can’t handle it.
On my iPhone 3G I remember getting download speeds of about 4800 kbits/s. With the 3GS however, I can’t seem to break 4075 Kbits/s download and 261 Kbits/s upload.
From what I’ve been reading, however, the data rates out west and in the U.S. are even worse! Luckily I’m in Florida right now and I’ve been given a chance to test it out first hand.
The current 3G data rate here in Fort Meyers on AT&T is 179 Kbits/s download and 60 Kbits/s upload. It’s ridiculously slow, and the 3G reception is maxed at 5 bars.
I guess Rogers is doing something right.
There is a great app call Speed Test, which is free from the AppStore. Download it and give it try and please post your results in the comment section of this post.

You’re still doing better than I can get in Calgary. Most I’ve managed is 659kbs over 3g
Saskatoon:
Download speed: 2232.9 Kbits/s (Max: 2232.9 Kbits/s)
Upload speed: 210.1 Kbits/s (Max: 217.9 Kbits/s)
Network: 3G
St Catharines ON
Download speed: 788 Kbits/s (max 872 Kbits/s)
Upload speed: 235 Kbits/s (max 237 Kbits/s)
Network: Rogers 3G
Using iPhone 3G OS 3.0 JB’d, in Montreal (Quebec) on Fido:
With the app SpeedTest (same used in the article):
Max: 1985/245 over 5 tests on 3 diff. days
With Speed Test (from speedtest.net), server in Montreal:
Max: 2507/206 over 7 tests on 3 diff days
With SpeedTest from DSRL, server from Toronto:
Max: 2659/92 over 7 tests on 5 diff days
Is it me or all these numbers don’t really adds up?
What do you think?
Penticton, BC
Download speed: 2631.4 Kbits/s (Max: 2631.4 Kbits/s)
Upload speed: 238.2 Kbits/s (Max: 238.2 Kbits/s)
Network: 3G
How are you getting such high speeds. My wifi is at 4000kbps…
Toronto: 912/212 kbps d/u
I’m at work and it’s always been a little slow here. In my suburban home I get 1500/250 d/u
Winnipeg:
Download speed: AVG 2460 Kbits/s (same for MAX)
Upload speed: AVG 227 Kbits/s (same for MAX)
Network: 3G
Calgary:
average download – 2328 Kbits/s
average upload – 222 Kbits/s
Download speed: 2156.0 Kbits/s (Max: 2156.0 Kbits/s)
Upload speed: 246.4 Kbits/s (Max: 246.4 Kbits/s)
Network: 3G (Fido)
interesting to note that I had decent download speed and terrible upload (26kbps) until I flipped airplane mode and then got the speeds shown above.
I had no internet at home for the weekend, so I tethered my 2G EDGE connection temporarily. I was able to download at about 240-300 Kbps. Slow to be sure, but it’s hilarious that it is faster than USA’s 3G network! LOL!
This is in Hong Kong by the way, on Peoples.
When are you going to buy your iPhone? Your time has come!!! 🙂
Richmond, BC:
Download Speed 2870 Kbits/s (2873 max)
Upload Speed 213 Kbits/s (220 max)
That is a fairly consistent number throughout the day. I tested these numbers at work, in downtown Richmond. Near the city hall.
Kbps D/U Calgary
1865 / 226
Was showing these numbers to a Bell CSR and he said that they deliver real 3G speeds – very close to 7200Kbps. I have no way to test but he seems to be a straight shooter. Maybe Rogers is “Canada’s Most Reliable Network” because it’s the slowest (except to bill, of course).
Victoria, BC
WiFi (at home):
Downlaod: 12,799 kbps
Upload: 632 kbps
Rogers Data:
Download: 2179 kbps
Upload: 149 kbps
I’ve never seen speeds over 3mbps, on Rogers.
BTW Edge D/U 139 / 49 Kbps
I am getting 1535/237 with the 3GS on FIDO in downtown Vancouver.
Could it be that Fido speeds are lower than Rogers?
Wow. You guys are getting very slow speeds. I live right downtown Toronto and it’s pretty consistent between 3500 – 4500 kpbs/s.
Toronto at Bloor 3G speed:
Down: 2489Kb
Up: 248Kb
Edmonton AB 3G : Consistently about 1800 down and 220 up.
Weird. My 3G here in Vancouver is like twice as fast as my wifi speed…neither of which are that great:
3G 2300kbits/s down 230kbits/s up
wifi 1200kbis/s down 204kbits/s up on Shaw
Delta/New West 3G:
D/L: 2217, U/L: 236
Seems to stay in that range.
Quebec city:
Wifi: 4849DOWN
586UP
3G: 2264DOWN
236UP
I’m about an hour an north of Toronto and for some reason Rogers has 3G up here, but anyways i ran the test 5 times with different download speeds but my uploads were generally the same
12:24 – 1038/249
12:25 – 3180/253 I sat in the same spot i didn’t move wtf?
12:28 – 822(max 1164)/251 .. wtf?
12:28 – 2810/252 .. haha rogers

in surrey average down load 1600kbits upload 220kbits on 3g network
wifi almost triple at 4500 and 450 for upload
My best was at home… I nailed 2426 down and I JUST (as I was typing this) nailed a new record for upping at 251. (Previously it was at 243)
Haven’t tried Wifi, but I think it’ll be much better.
Currently situated in an office building literally across the street from Rogers HQ.
1536 down and 138 up in niagara falls on iPhone 3g (not 3gs)
I use that app for a long time now. Really good app. Ya I get some slow speeds sometimes but it doesn’t bother me unless I notice.
With my Iphone 3G with OS3.0:
Inside my workplace near Hwy 7 and Leslie, I’m getting avg 758kbits/sec download and 161kbits/s upload. This is in 3G.
In WiFi mode, 1972kbits/s on download and 1576 kbits/s on upload.
Location services disabled.
Unfortunately, you remember wrong. Unless of course, you had a magical 3G phone.
They simply weren’t capable of 4800Kb/s. The had a theoretical top speed of 3600Kb/s (HSDPA 3.6), but you’d never see that. Realistically, a 3G might see 2000Kb/s. Only the 3Gs supports HSDPA 7.2 – and that 7200 is again a theoretical top speed. If you’re hitting 4000Kb/s on the 3Gs, you’re doing well.
Are you sure you don’t want to restate your original speeds?
Andre: Yes, I believe Christopher made a slight miscalculation, but since he’s out of town we’re going to cut him some slack. 😉
If you guys recall from my previous post: https://www.iphoneincanada.ca/iphone-news/rogers-3g-network-speedtest-iphone-3g-vs-iphone-3gs/
I found the Speedtest app to be unreliable at times, so make sure you try the other ones as well.
On 3G with 3.0 of Fido
20 minutes on the North of Montreal … 5 bars signal
down 1297 ……. Up 240
after reboot
down 1685 ……. Up 238
I have a screen shot somewhere of my 3G speed test. I’ll see if I can dig it up and we’ll verify.

So the point here is although Robbers advertises a 7.2 Mbit/s download speed, not one poster here has achieved even 50% of that rate! Besides being a good piece of (?misleading) advertising, what is the relevance of that unattainable figure, I wonder?
Ill prob just have slow speeds as everyone else. Its interesting though to see what everyone gets for speeds.
Hope you’re not using your Rogers plan in Florida. Data roaming will cost you 3¢ / Kb.
I got on fido 3G with my iPhone 3GS
