Review: Cliphanger for iPhone
Every once in a while an innovative product arrives at iPhoneinCanada HQ and today is one of those days.
Cliphanger for iPhone
The Cliphanger Stick is a convenient one-piece accessory that allows you to securely hold your portable devices or attach them to other items such as hooks, pants and bags. The reason I am using the word “devices” and not “iPhone” is because the Cliphanger is completely universal. The accessory supports iPhones, iPods, virtually any cell phone and quite possibly any portable media player. As you can see, the Cliphanger is extremely versatile.
The Cliphanger comes in the form a large, elongated clip that has an opening on one side. The clip itself is very flexible and has a technology called “ergo-bend”. Essentially, the clip is very bendy and bendy is good.
From here, the Cliphanger has an adhesive pad that sticks to the back of your portable device. In about 99/100 cases, I would never even dream of sticking something like this on my iPhone, but the adhesive comes off easily and cleanly and is actually quite convenient. More on convenience in a minute.
Also included in the package is a universal hook that has its own adhesive pad. This hook can be placed anywhere (in-car for example) and the Cliphanger can be attached easily to that hook for easy use and storage. Overall, the entire package is very nice.
As I was saying, the Cliphanger is convenient but this is a double-edged sword. The convenience advantage to the Cliphanger is the ability to hang your portable device anywhere that can accept a hook. The best example I can provide is where I am currently using the Cliphanger; on my jeans belt loop. The reason this is convenient is because
- My iPhone is out of my pocket
- I have easy access to the iPhone screen
- If I am not using the headphones, I can answer a call immediately.
The convenience disadvantage is that now the iPhone now has a clip attached to it and that means no accessory case (except screen protectors) can be used with the iPhone. In turn, this means that if you hang your iPhone on your jeans or bag for example, there is about a 100% greater chance (don’t you love the optimism) that you will damage the iPhone in some way. You can adapt this example to essentially any portable device.
So like I said, the convenience that the Cliphanger delivers is a double edged sword.
The Cliphanger Light is identical to the Cliphanger Stick with the notable exception that the Cliphanger Light comes with a light (did you guess?).
The addition of a light is actually pretty convenient for any media device that does not have a 3.5-inch bright LCD display. My iPhone has a flashlight built-in (the screen) but for those people who are using…say…a Blackberry *snickers* (hehe) that do not have a large screen, the Cliphanger Light is perfect.
The light is activated by rotating the bezel clockwise and can stay lit for a very bright couple of hours without having to use any kind of button. The only unfortunate part is the light requires CR1220 batteries, which are otherwise known as those tiny and expense watch batteries that are almost impossible to find at a price less than $5.00 PER battery (in BC anyway).
Overall, both the Cliphanger Stick and Light introduce a method to conveniently store and use your iPhone (or other portable device) when you are mobile. The flexible clip and adhesive backing are very durable and will hold your iPhone securely to wherever you clip it. However, be aware that your iPhone will no longer be able to use an accessory case and will be more exposed than usual which can lead to harm of the device.
The Cliphanger Stick and Light are scored a 4 out of 5.
