Rogers/Fido iPhone 3GS Upgrade Policy Guide
Do you have an iPhone 3G with Rogers or Fido service?
Did you buy your iPhone 3G on or after July 11, 2008 from Rogers or Fido?
Do you want the new iPhone 3G “S” releasing June 19, 2009 from Rogers or Fido?
If you answer yes to all three of those questions, then below is a guide for you on how to upgrade to the iPhone 3G “S” with Rogers or Fido.
The Contract
With either Rogers or Fido, you will need to sign up on a 3-year contract to be eligible for the iPhone 3G “S” and choose an available voice or voice and data plan. You can check out the available Rogers plans for June 2009 here.
To be eligible for the contract pricing below, you must have a 3 year voice plan that is $30.01 or higher, regardless of any data plan option (you don’t even need to buy a data plan to get the iPhone 3G “S”). The prices below will all reflect the requirement of a voice plan that is $30.01 or higher. If your voice plan is $30.00 or less, add $50 to the prices of the iPhone listed below.
The New Upgrade Policy
Back in March 2009Â Rogers and Fido brought in a new policy that essentially said that if you have a Smartphone (Blackberry, iPhone, etc) on your account, you will not be able to upgrade to another Smartphone until you reach the 24 month (2 years) mark in your contract from your last upgrade/activation. Moreover, after 12 months in your contract from your last upgrade/activation, you can upgrade to a REGULAR CONSUMER phone (Nokia 5310, Nokia 6086, etc). In summary, dumbphones are every 12 months, smartphones every 24 months.
This changes absolutely everything for current Rogers/Fido customers.
Eligibility
New Rogers/Fido Customers
If you are a TOTALLY brand new customer to Rogers or Fido, once you have your 3 year contract plan chosen, the prices below are for NEW customers:
- 16GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $199
- 32GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $299
The next part is going to be confusing, so read carefully.
Current Rogers/Fido Customers using Smartphone Devices
If you are an existing Rogers/Fido customer and are going to be less than two years into your contract by the time the iPhone 3G “S” is released, then a few things happen here.
So according to the new upgrade policy, if you currently have a Smartphone (iPhone, Blackberry, etc) registered on your account, even if you did not buy it from Rogers but it is registered on your account, then you will NOT be able to upgrade to another Smartphone (iPhone 3G “S”) until you have reached the 24 month (2 year) mark in your contract since your last upgrade/activation. At that time, 2 years in, your pricing will look like this:
- 16GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $199 or less
- 32GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $299 or less
In other words, everyone that got the iPhone 3G on July 11, 2008, your next Smartphone upgrade will be available July 11, 2010, according to the upgrade policy.
However, do understand that when Rogers/Fido say you are “eligible” to upgrade, upgrading to a new smartphone (iPhone 3G “S”) may not actually be the case. You may be “eligible” to upgrade, but you may be only eligible for a non-smartphone, for example.
I’d like to take a moment and just say that the comments section below is now officially open for you to say whatever hate you have against Rogers/Fido.
Current Rogers/Fido Customers using non-Smartphone Devices
If you are an existing Rogers/Fido customer and are not using a smartphone device or a smartphone device is not registered on your account, you may upgrade to the iPhone 3G “S” so long as your account has reached atleast its 12 month mark since your last activation/upgrade.
At that time, 1 year in, your pricing will look like this:
- 16GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $299 or less
- 32GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $399 or less
The Old Policy
Before March 2009, the old policy was you could upgrade to ANY phone as soon as you have reached the 12 month (1 year) mark in your contract since your last upgrade/activation. Ofcourse, you pay a premium for the device because you would be only one year into the contract term. So for example, the price of upgrading to the iPhone 3G “S” under the old policy would look like this after 1 year into your contract term since your last upgrade/activation.
- 16GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $299 or more
- 32GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $399 or more
The reason you pay $100 more is because you are only 1 year into your contract term and your accumulated discounts are not high enough to enable promotional pricing.
Once you reached the 2 year mark in your contract since your last upgrade/activation, under the old policy, promotional pricing is usually granted and looks like this:
- 16GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $199 or less
- 32GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $299 or less
The Fix
There are 4 ways that this can be fixed or avoided.
One, Rogers/Fido get rid of this 24 month smartphone upgrade policy completely.
or Two, Rogers/Fido allow everyone to upgrade early to the iPhone 3G “S” so long as they are atleast 3 months into their contract term. They did this last year with the iPhone 3G in early August. So if this happens again, that means everyone who bought an iPhone 3G from Rogers/Fido may be able to upgrade to the iPhone 3G “S” when it is released.
In most cases, pricing in either of the two scenarios above for all existing contracted iPhone 3G/Smartphone customers will be as follows:
- 16GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $199 or more
- 32GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $299 or more
Or Three, Rogers tags the iPhone 3G “S” as a consumer device making it available to upgrade after 12 months instead of 24 months. Rogers tagged the iPhone 3G as a consumer device when it was released July 11, 2008 because you were able to get the iPhone 3G at promotional pricing on a voice-only contract plan and did not necessarily need a data plan, unless you wanted one (other Rogers smartphones must have a voice and data plan to be sold at all at promotional pricing, for example). I suspect a similar consumer device tagging situation with the iPhone 3G “S”.
Or Four, Rogers/Fido release the iPhone 3G “S” at a reasonable outright price and allows everyone to buy the device, even current contracted customers. At this point, Rogers/Fido have confirmed that they will be selling the iPhone 3G “S” on outright no contract pricing. Pricing for the 16GB iPhone 3G “S” will be $699 and the 32GB iPhone 3G “S” will be $799.
The Conclusion
So here is the somewhat good news. This “policy” seriously varies between customers. It is amazing how inconsistent Rogers/Fido policies are. The only way to truly find out your eligibility is to either call Rogers/Fido multiple times to find out or visit your local Rogers/Fido store.
In other words, YOU MAY GET THE IPHONE 3G “S” WHEN IT COMES OUT or soon after July 11, 2009, which is one year from when most of you bought your iPhone 3G. But then again, maybe not.
Just remember, that when Rogers/Fido say you are “eligible” to upgrade, upgrading to a new smartphone (iPhone 3G “S”) may not actually be the case. You may be “eligible” to upgrade, but you may be only eligible for a non-smartphone, for example.
So please, do yourself a favor and do not listen to other forums or anything telling you whatever. They cannot tell you your exact eligibility. Take what you have learned here today and call Rogers/Fido multiple times or visit a local Rogers/Fido store to find out your exact eligibility.
What You CAN Do
Well, there is only one thing you really can do and that is use your voice. So, we have started an online petition about this upgrade policy.
If you find this 24-month smartphone upgrade policy to be unfair, we have created two online petitions to hopefully fight the policy.
To sign the first petition, CLICK HERE (you’ll need to have or make a Twitter account).
To sign the second petition, CLICK HERE (no account required).
Please sign atleast one or both petitions. Every little bit helps.

Another option: Have more than one phone on your Rogers account.
I have the iPhone 3G and my son has an old flip phone, both on the same Rogers account. I will be upgrading his phone to the 3G’S’ but in fact, he’ll ‘inherit’ my 16GB 3G while I get the 32GB 3G’S’ ;<}
He’s graduating Grade 8, so the 3G is a nice graduation present and will be handy in High School with tethering now available.
I wish in grade 8 we even had cell phones LOL Not really….
Its amazing to see kids in grade 4,5,6 to have them, like whats the world coming to 😛
It was a necessity for after school. If he came out of school and I wasn’t already there he could call to find out how close I was. Otherwise he’d have to go into the after-school program at significant cost. *shrug*
He’s getting the iPhone 3G hand-me-down on his way to high school… With a laptop and tethering it should be of use.
Monty,
This may seem like a silly question, but are the two of you switching numbers as well, or are you going to swap SIM cards?
Will swap SIMs and each of us keep the same number. Rogers doesn’t care what phone your SIM is in, they only care about getting their money. Since I’m still adding the new one as an upgrade to his current phone and paying the associated costs, they’re happy. And yes, I’ve confirmed with Rogers that there are no rules about keeping the equipment associated with the particular account.
When I get the new phone, I’ll activate it on his account with his SIM, then swap SIMS and use iTunes to sync the new iPhone to my backed-up data from the old iPhone. After that is done, I reset the old iPhone to it’s Factory settings with his SIM in it and he’ll have a clean slate to start off from.
Its a bit confusing but I understand some what…. lol First thing comes to mind from reading the title, Robbers is being Robbers and a$$holes.
Im more interested in the buy out price. But for that estimated price, which I think it may be more! Thats a stupid price to pay for a phone! 🙁
Thanks man for all this info!
Wow, this made my head hurt. I’m not planning to upgrade until next year anyway, but I think Rogers’ upgrade policies are completely excessive. Hopefully we can pressure them into being more reasonable.
Great work on this blog in general, it’s provided me with a lot of essential info. Keep it up!
Okay, simple question.
I don’t currently have an iPhone and am currently without a contract with Fido (it expired back in Sept.08). What’s my purchase price for the 3Gs; can I get less than a 3 year contract and do I absolutely need a data plan??? Thanks 3 times.
When you renew on a 3 year contract (cannot be less) with a voice plan that is $30.01 or higher, your pricing will vary:
16GB: $174-$199
32GB: $274-$299
As mentioned in the post, you don’t need a data plan.
I’m about to renew my contract with Rogers as my 3 year voice plan is due in two months. I have a family plan at the moment with 2 lines. Line 1: I have a 3G Iphone with a 3 year data plan. Line 2: I am eligable for a hardware upgrade so I am thinking to upgrade to the 3GS. So my question is, if I renew on a new 3 year family voice plan of over $30.01, will my 32GB 3GS be $299 or $349? I know I will have to deal with Rogers later about this and I don’t really like to talk to them, but I just want to get some info here first. Thanks,
Duc
What I did when my contract was up was figure out what I wanted then said I want this if you cannot offer it to me I will take my services elsewhere – I also went as far as going to customer relations (the step just b4 closing account) They gave me a wicked deal and a phone (this was b4 the iphone though lol) But you are in the power seat now because you can cancel or stay… Use your power Rogers Does lol
Are you sure you don’t NEED a data plan for Fido? I went into a store today and phone CS, and they both told me that a data plan is required to get the iPhone 3GS. o_O
Thanks for all your answers, very helpful!
I have a question tho..
I’m on a 3 years contract with a dumbphone (Razor or something like that), I just reached 12 months of this contract!
I can’t find what is the policy for upgrading to an iPhone with data/voice plan when you have a small voice plan with a simple phone for a year…
Thanks man!
Youre okay. You can get it when it comes out.
if I have to pay $700 for a 3GS whydont I just buy one that is factory unlocked. Where do I get a factory unlocked from?
only online store that has factory unlocked iphones that i know of is timtechs.ca it probably cost u around $1000.
Duc,
what is the base price of your family plan?
It should be $30 or 35 or 40 etc
don’t include fees, taxes, add ons, nothing.
Just the base price. Refer to your bill
X1Zero,
My current base family plan is at $35.00
Duc
I just got my 16gb iPhone on may 8 2009. I guess I am screwed for any upgrade option. I also have over a year on my other plan, but that is fido city plan. Can u get any deal on upgrading on a grandfathered plan? (fido city)?
I have an iPhone 3G and 1 dumbphone that my wife is using right now under my account. The contract for the dumbphone expired last March and told the wife not to upgrade as I’m waiting for the new iPhone. She agreed and will definitely get the new iPhone 3Gs…..but not sure if she’ll agree to use my 3G and for me to have the 3Gs. (pray, pray, pray!).
ReyT,
Funny, I am in the same situation as you are. My wife is questioning me about why she’s gonna end up with a used Iphone and not the new one? hehe.
Duc
Duc, your 3GS will be $349.99.
Your family plan is split over 2 lines like this:
1st line: $20
2nd line: $15
total: $35
Ok thanks. That’s what I thought about the pricing for the 32GB as well.
X1Zero Thanks for taking the time to summarize this. They sure are making it complicated for us loyal customers who want the latest technology. I’ve been hounding @keithmcarthur on Twitter to just provide the final details or stop talking because they are just talking in circles. I honestly think they are undecided on what to do, like last year with the data plans. They had really bad ones, then came out with the 6 gig plan. Or they might be just waiting to give us the bad news a the last minute. I say just give us the details already – good or bad (hopefully good).
I think I’ll ride this one out. It’s no different than computers, you’ll never keep up. I upgraded my plan to 6GB (adding 6 months), but I’m willing to bet when my contract hits 2 years or thereabouts, there will be another better Iphone.
Unfortunately I suspect the only way Rogers is going to change is either a) the 3GS launch will suck so bad because there will be few new purchases and they’ll have scared away all the upgraders or 2) there has to be such a huge outcry from the media that the bad publicity will make them change the policy.
Nevertheless I did sign the petitions. 🙂
Come on seriously… To all existing 3g users.. Keep what you have now. Upgrade to 3.0. Wait for competitors to come out in the market soon. Why lock in again.
The article refers to a minimum voice plan of $30.01 for a three year contract to qualify for the preferred pricing. Is this before including things like a $10 value pack, $20 unlimited Canadian long distance, $5 early evenings & weekends, etc?
Those things are not your voice plan. So not included. It’s just VOICE plan
Thanks for the response. The Fido rep never mentioned that when he showed me all of the voice plans and the options that could bundled together. This doesn’t appear to be a widely known fact, at least on the interwebs. I find the $0.01 part particularly annoying. They might as well make the minimum $35.00 give the cost of individual add ons. It’s not like they offer a $30.01 voice plan. Hopefully they forget to charge me the extra $50.00; I doubt that will happen though.
If you are starting as a new customer, SOMETIMES they will just forgo the extra $50. if you are upgrading though, you’ll pay 100% for sure.
Just got off the phone with Brian in customer service with Rogers. Existing customers with the iPhone will be able to upgrade to the 3Gs for a “nominal” fee. He stated CSR’s are being told that the fee would be between $25-$50. A new 3-year contract would need to be signed and the existing contract would be voided. Very similar to when I upgraded from the Sony Ericsson K790 to the iPhone 3G in the first place. Good news for all, let’s just hope the 3Gs didn’t solve the hardware exploit that allows jailbreaking. It would be a shame to have 2x the RAM and all that extra processing power without the ability to multitask!
Hope this helps guys
I’ve also just got off the phone to Rogers CSR, spoke to two diff people ref LostReality comments regarding exisisting iphone 3g cx being able to upgrade for a nominal fee. Both advisors knew nothing of the policy and reteriated the offical policy guide at top of the page.
Try $100
Out of curiousity, where was this information taken from?
I’m really interested in buying an iPhone without a data plan. I only need the voice plan, but everywhere I look, it seems like you can’t buy the iPhone 3G S at the subsidized price without getting a data plan.
In his twitter feed, Keth McArthur even stated that the $199/$299 pricing plan is dependent on the data plan.
Also, when it’s said, “The prices below will all reflect the requirement of a voice plan that is $30.01 or higher. If your voice plan is $30.00 or less, add $50 to the price.” Does that mean I will have to pay $50 more for the actual phone, or $50 more per month (aka data plan)?
Where are you “looking”? The phone isnt even out yet.
You add $50 to phone….
I just spoke to a sales rep at Fido and they are only allowing new customers and folk with 6 months or less left on their contract to get the new iphone 3gs with any kind or rebate. I have to wait till the 19th to call back to find out any more info. If I can maybe gets some cash off or are they gonna gut us on the pricing. Fido best come correct on this and maybe they can keep some customers loyal and happy while they make a tonne of money off us!!
Out of curiousity, where was this info taken from?
I’d really like to get a subsidized iPhone 3G S with only a voice plan, but it seems like everyone else is saying that you can only get an iPhone at the subsidized rate with a voice AND data plan. I’ve tried calling Fido a couple times, but they always refuse to give any information until the 19th.
I wouldn’t mind paying the added $50 for the phone with a voice plan less than $30, but I’m worried that I’ll have to pay an extra $30/month for a data plan just to get a subsidized phone.
I’d like to believe this info, but it’s hard with so many conflicting reports everywhere else.
I’ll say it one more time.
You do not need to get a data plan to get promo pricing for the iPhone.
If your VOICE plan is $30.00 or less, you add $50 to the phone prize as I have laid out above.
People, please READ the post before asking questions.
Keith is a PR agent for Rogers. Use your head. Why do you think he would say a data plan is needed? It’s better for Rogers.
If you were in Canada last year, you should remember that you didn’t need a data plan either then for the iPhone.
In store, reps will always say data is needed because they get paid commission on it.
Outrageous. Rogers is alienating the tech crowd that has made products like the iPhone so successful.
Regardless of how cell phone companies “work” and whether or not the upgrade is worth it, many users of Apple products like to upgrade when something new comes out.
It’s understandable that providers shouldn’t be paying for these upgrades, but they stand nothing to lose by allowing an upgrade with a contract renewal.
I hope what was said a few comments below about a possible upgrade for a “nominal fee” turns out to be true.
As a side note, providers need to realize that the endless rules and guidelines and restrictions and exceptions only create distrust and resentment in the mind of the consumer.
I’m on rogers and I have a sony ericsson W810i registered on my account (non-smartphone) even though i’m using an iPhone 2G. I AM 2 years (or more) into my contract. Will i be able to get the 32GB iPhone 3GS for $299?
If you are 2 years or more and your VOICE plan is $30.01 or higher, then yes
will you be able to transfer your apps from your old iphone to the new one?
yes you can
I have two seperate accounts.one on the east coast and one on the west.So I have a iphone on one account so should i be eligible for a upgrade on my non i phone account?
Yes
TETHERING – BE WARNED…..
According to a Rogers Customer Support Rep tethering will be available but it will NOT be part of your data plan. It will be billed seperately. The Rep told me to be prepared for enormous bills. That having been said take it with a grain of salt, my experience with Rogers is that one hand does not not know what the other is doing and for the most part they have not got a clue.
Wrong.
Please ignore.
Thanks, that one didn’t make sense at all. Heck tethering is the only reason I’m getting the 6Gb data plan! At best I’m only using around 50-100Mb/month at the moment.
Yeah besides some of the CSR’s who hang around howardforums and such, the vast majority at these places usually know less than the people on this site do about iphone pricing, policy, etc. I guess, to be fair, they do deal with people who *gasp* have non iphone related questions and issues…heh, but yeah, on the whole they kind of suck.
Anyone know if the HUP with Fido varies depending on whether or not you’re on the old plans or the new low cost, sans system access fee, “garden” plans? I had read on Howard Forums awhile back that the upgrade policy only applied to people on the new plans and that those on the old plans (including loyalty) would be free to upgrade as previously specified…anyone know anything about this? My source may be out to lunch.
Its hard to tell because the policies are so insanely vague. The best way to just simply wait until your upgrade day and then you’ll an answer
Do you have references for your information suggesting that new iPhone 3GS subscriptions DO NOT require a data plan in addition to the voice plans?
Most of the current information I have read suggest Rogers is forcing on us a data plan in 2009 but your information is the first to contradict this.
You dont need references when you ARE the source.
You dont need a data plan for promo pricing but you WILL be pushed into one. Whether you take it or not is up to you.
On a side note, you should get data anyway. If you dont, just get a different phone and leave the iPhone for someone who will utilize it completely.
Would the store employees attempt to force you into a data plan, or refuse to sell the phone to you at the promo price if you refuse to take the data plan?
I’m in a situation where I’m getting the phone on one of the numbers on my accounts and using for my main number, but I was told that I’ll have to get and then cancel the data plan on the non-main number, incur a $100 early termination fee for the data plan, and then re-add the data plan to my main account.
Sorry, I should mention that I’m with Fido, if that makes a difference.
X1Zero: [or anyone who knows]
Last year Rogers’ advertising gave the impression that you had to physically activate the iPhone in-store at the time of purchase, so I lined up outside a store for hours only to find I was two spots behind the last iPhone they had, then I moved to another store that had more stock only to find all they had left were white 16Gb versions. Then, much to my chagrin I found out that you could order over the phone for FedEx delivery within days! The in-store activation being a myth. So, my question is what time can you start phoning to order the new iPhone for delivery on release day? Midnight?
There are two types of “activation” needed.
First is the account activation or upgrade that Rogers does in order to give you the iPhone. This is done either in store or over the phone, depending on where you get it from.
Second is the iTunes activation that bypasses the iPhone emergency screen. This is done by simply plugging the iPhone into iTunes for a few seconds. This will be done for you if you go into a store or do it yourself if you order over the phone.
If you are in store and dont want anyone touching the phone, just say you will activate it through iTunes yourself. They wont even take the plastic off the box because the information they need for account activation is on the back.
In terms of ordering, you can start at 6:30AM the day of the release. At this time, (as far as I have seen), you cannot pre-order. In any case, the phone lines will be very tied up that morning with support calls so I recommend going early in store.
I have to disagree. Lining up in store is only worthwhile if you’re a sucker for punishment, enjoy risking disappointment and absolutely have to have the new iPhone instantly. As I said, I lined up at two different stores last year, the first ran out of stock before me and the second didn’t have any of the model I wanted by the time they got to me. Phoning in and getting exactly what you want within days is a much more realistic approach. My sanity is more important to me than instant gratification.
Lost my Iphone (which I’ve had for only 1 month) last night and spent over an hour on the phone with fido today with absolutely no resolution. They apparently cannot sell the iphone without a contract & since I renewed my contract last month when I got the phone, I’m basically screwed. Amazing. Thanks Fido/Rogers!
Check your policies for your credit card and/or household insurance. One or the other may cover lost property. Some credit cards cover you for loss of whatever you purchase for a period of time after purchase. Most household insurance will cover articles that are lost/stolen. Respectfully, Fido has no obligation to replace something you lost.
if I add a second line, what is the absolute cheapest monthly plan I can sign up for and get the iPhone 32gb for 299?
At this time, $35
As long as your voice plan is above $30.01, you will get promo pricing.
Yes, store reps can absolutely refuse to sell it to you if you don’t get a data plan. The practice is heavily frowned upon but many store reps would rather save an iPhone for someone who will help them reach both their voice and data targets.
if i buy the new iphone 3g S from rogers .would i be able to use it world wide outsde Canada.
would it be factory unlocked or still have to use a rogers sim card
Well I took this bit of info in to my Fido store and they told me to stick it. Not only that they say this website is misrepresenting their policy. Help I need a link to a fido site that states these rules or policy in order to get my upgrade.
I can't wait for Telus and Bell to come out with the iPhone next month. This will hopefully allow for greater competition which means better plans. Rogers is nothing but a rip off organization, I will pay whatever I have too to get out of their contract. They will no longer be ripping me off.
Or he could've walked to the nearest payphone or store and asked to use the phone there….
F the “R” and move over to the “T” or “B”
LOL

Thanks for all your answers, very helpful!
I have a question tho..
I’m on a 3 years contract with a dumbphone (Razor or something like that), I just reached 12 months of this contract!
I can’t find what is the policy for upgrading to an iPhone with data/voice plan when you have a small voice plan with a simple phone for a year…
Thanks man!
if I have to pay $700 for a 3GS whydont I just buy one that is factory unlocked. Where do I get a factory unlocked from?
Youre okay. You can get it when it comes out.
