The Absolutely Everything You Need To Know To Buy Or Upgrade To The Rogers/Fido iPhone 3G or iPhone 3GS Post
Ignore everything else. This is your ultimate Rogers/Fido iPhone Guide!
We are just days away (June 19, 2009) from the launch of the iPhone 3GS and all the final price drops for the iPhone 3G. So today I will write out a final all-you-need-to-know about the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS for Rogers and Fido.

So, this is how we are going to do this to try and keep it simple. I am going to break everything into sections listed below:
1.) Rogers/Fido iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS activation, upgrade, tethering policies, and 6GB data plan policies
2.) New Rogers/Fido customers that want the iPhone 3GS
3.) New Rogers/Fido customers that want the iPhone 3G
4.) Existing Rogers/Fido customers that want the iPhone 3GS
5.) Existing Rogers/Fido customers that want the iPhone 3G
———————————————
1.) Rogers/Fido iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS Activation, Upgrade, and Tethering Policies
———-
Activation Policy
———-
With either Rogers or Fido, you will need to sign up on a 3-year contract to be eligible for the iPhone 3G “S” or iPhone 3G and choose an available voice and data plan or voice with data attached plan to get promotional pricing. In other words, YOU MUST HAVE A DATA PLAN TO GET ANY IPHONE ON PROMOTIONAL PRICING. There is no exception here. If you have been a customer for 20 years, it does not matter. You must have a data plan and a 3 year contract to get promotional pricing. You can check out the available Rogers plans for June 2009 here.
To be eligible for the device contract pricing below, you must have a 3 year voice plan that is $30.01 or higher and a data plan attached to the voice plan. The device prices below will all reflect the requirement of a voice plan that is $30.01 or higher and a data plan, in most cases. If your voice plan is $30.00 or less, add $50 to the price of the iPhone devices listed below.***
***As of June 19, 2009, this “plan must be higher than $30.01 to get promotional pricing” policy is no longer in effect.
———-
Upgrade Policy
———-
Back in March 2009Â Rogers and Fido brought in a new policy that essentially said that if you have a Smartphone (Blackberry, iPhone, etc) on your account (tracked by phone number), you will not be able to upgrade to another Smartphone until you reach the 24 month (2 years) mark in your contract from your last upgrade/activation.
Moreover, after 12 months in your contract from your last upgrade/activation, you can upgrade to a REGULAR CONSUMER phone (Nokia 5310, Nokia 6086, etc).
In summary, dumbphones are every 12 months, smartphones every 24 months.
So for everyone out there that has a smartphone on their account (tracked by phone number), you will be able to upgrade after 12 months from your last upgrade/activation but not to a smartphone device (iPhone).
Moreover, Fido customers can use their FidoDollars towards an upgrade.
———-
June 18, 2009 Upgrade Policy Change
———-
As of June 18, 2009, Rogers/Fido amended this policy for a limited time for current iPhone 3G owners. The changes are detailed below:
Option #1
Existing Rogers iPhone 3G customers with a minimum tenure of 6 months since their activation/last upgrade will be able to upgrade to an iPhone 3GS with a $250 discount towards the no-term price. You will be required to add 1 year onto your existing contract and have an attached data plan.

- 32GB iPhone 3G “S†in Black or White – $549
- All administration fees will be waived for the customers who are taking advantage of this offer.
———-
Option #2
Existing Rogers iPhone 3G customers who activated or upgraded from July 11, 2008 to September 30, 2008 and have consistently spent on average of $100 or more each month will be able to take advantage of the in-market pricing.
- 16GB iPhone 3G “S†in Black or White – $199
- 32GB iPhone 3G “S†in Black or White – $299
- All administration fees will be waived for the customers who are taking advantage of this offer.
———-
Option #3
Fido customers can take advantage of the Fido Rewards iPhone 3GS promotion.
- Use FidoDollars towards the purchase of a no-term iPhone 3G S
- Fido will top up the FidoDollars amount by $100
- This promotion does not include an extension or renewal of their service agreement or the need to get a data plan
- 16GB iPhone 3G “S†in Black or White – $699 minus your FidoDollars minus Fidos Bonus 100 FidoDollars
- 32GB iPhone 3G “S†in Black or White – $799 minus your FidoDollars minus Fidos Bonus 100 FidoDollars
If you are NOT currently an existing iPhone 3G Fido customer, you can still use your FidoDollars towards the no-term cost of the iPhone 3GS by subscribing to a data add-on with term.
- 16GB iPhone 3G “S†in Black or White with data add-on – $699 minus your FidoDollars
- 32GB iPhone 3G “S†in Black or White with data add-on – $799 minus your FidoDollars
———-
Tethering Policy
———-
New/Existing customers signing up on a 1GB or higher data plan on or after June 8, 2009 but before December 31, 2009
If and when you are running OS 3.0 and sign up on a data plan that includes atleast 1GB of data between the dates of June 8, 2009 and December 31, 2009, then you can tether all you want using the amount of data you have in your data option up until December 31, 2009. To enable tethering, if its blocked on your 3.0 iPhone, call in to Rogers/Fido.
However, if you get a data plan that is less than 1GB, then you will not be able to tether because the service must be activated by calling to Rogers/Fido and Rogers/Fido will not activate tethering on an account that has less than a 1GB data plan.
———-
Existing customers already signed up on any data plan prior to June 8, 2009
For all those people that already have data plans of all different sizes prior to June 8, 2009, you can tether all you want, as long as you have atleast a 1GB data plan, using the amount of data you have in your data option up until December 31, 2009. If you happen to have a 1GB or higher data plan and the tethering is blocked on your 3.0 iPhone, call in to Rogers/Fido to enable it.
If you have less than a 1GB Data plan and are running a 3.0 iPhone where the tethering is blocked, do not call in to Rogers/Fido because they will not enable tethering for you unless you want to increase your data plan to 1GB.
———-
After December 31, 2009?
For those wondering what is happening after December 31, 2009…well, not so good news.
———-
Every Single Rogers/Fido Customer
After December 31, 2009, your ability to tether may be taken away and you as an existing or new Rogers or Fido customer will have the option to subscribe to various tethering plans. Your existing ability to tether (if you had it) may be taken away. This means that after December 31, 2009, somehow Rogers and Fido may make it either impossible for you to tether your mobile device without the add-on of one of these “tethering plans” or just charge you extra for any “tethering data” used.

———-
How To Keep Tethering and Bypass The Rogers/Fido Tethering Policy, even after December 31, 2009
What is currently happening is most of the Rogers/Fido customers that are running the GM (GoldMaster) version of the 3.0 iPhone software released at WWDC have the Internet Tethering option blocked when they try and access Internet Tethering. It is blocked in the GM 3.0 and will be blocked in the official June 17, 2009 release of 3.0 as well.
Customers with a 500MB Data plan that have added or are going to add a 500MB Data plan will not be able to call in to Rogers/Fido and get tethering enabled by Rogers/Fido unless they upgrade their plan to atleast a 1GB Data plan.
The error message that Rogers/Fido customers are getting on their 3.0 iPhones is:
Set Up Internet Tethering
To enable tethering on this account, contact Rogers
So this is the method in which Rogers/Fido will control this tethering policy.
The way they do this is through iTunes. Rogers/Fido have what are called IPCC files or “iPhone Carrier Configuration” files. These files are loaded onto Rogers/Fido iPhone’s and give you MMS, Tethering, etc.
In this case, in order to enable tethering, you must call in to Rogers/Fido, have them place an “internet tethering promotional SOC code” (pronounced “sock”) on your account and then tethering will be enabled. The only catch is this is where Rogers/Fido get you because remember, if you have a data plan less than 1GB, Rogers/Fido will not activate tethering for you.
So how do you avoid this? The answer is get your own custom IPCC file or mobileconfig option.
I have been using a custom Rogers IPCC file throughout all of the Beta periods of OS 3.0 and to this day I have tethering enabled and working fine on my 500MB data plan (I also have MMS working fine). So it would seem that as long as you have a custom IPCC file or mobileconfig profile, you’re all good!
———-
But what if I already download OS 3.0 and tethering is blocked?
Do not worry if you already downloaded the 3.0 software and tethering is blocked. All you need to do is get the custom IPCC file or install an updated mobileconfig profile.
Alternatively, if you have a 1GB or higher data plan, you can call Rogers/Fido and they will activate it for you. But after December 31, 2009, they will take it away UNLESS you have the custom IPCC file or update mobileconfig loaded on your 3.0 iPhone.
———-
So what are the steps?
Proceed at your own risk. Playing around will this stuff can negatively effect your wireless bill
Here are the steps to activate tethering on your iPhone with OS 3.0 without having to call Rogers/Fido or increase your monthly fee and data plan to 1GB or higher:
- Ensure you have an iPhone 3G/3G running OS 3.0 and atleast a 500MB data plan
- Find the working custom Rogers or Fido IPCC file that works across all versions of 3.0 (not all of them work, so beware) OR just click here on your iPhone 3G/3GS and choose your carrier Rogers or Fido and then tap “Install”.
- For the IPCC file install only, continue to follow below.
- Update iTunes to the latest version.
- Plug your iPhone into iTunes.
- When it shows up, hold SHIFT (PC) or OPTION (Mac) and click UPDATE in iTunes. A window will open. If your iTunes does not do this, follow steps 1 – 3 for Mac here or Windows here.
- Search for the Rogers/Fido IPCC file and select it.
- After about 10 seconds when the update is applied, eject your iPhone using iTunes and reboot the iPhone.
These methods may not work for everyone, but in my experience, it works 100%.

$30 6GB Data Plan
———-
Both new and existing customers may get the $30 6GB data plan until July 31, 2009.
It will require a 3–year contract and must be attached to a voice plan.
———————————————
2.) New Rogers/Fido Customers That Want The iPhone 3GS
If you are a TOTALLY brand new customer to Rogers or Fido, once you have your 3 year contract plan chosen, the prices below are for NEW customers:

4.) Existing Rogers/Fido customers that want the iPhone 3GS
———-
As of June 18, 2009, Rogers/Fido amended the upgrade policy for a limited time for current iPhone 3G owners.

———-
After the new policy change is finished, the normal policy will be back in effect. That is listed below:
———-
You have a smartphone and are less than 2 years but more than 1 year into contract
———-
If you are an existing Rogers/Fido customer and are using a smartphone (iPhone) and are going to be less than 2 years but more than 1 year into your contract since the last time you upgraded/activated by the time the iPhone 3G “S” is released, then you cannot upgrade to a new smartphone.
So according to the new upgrade policy, if you currently have a Smartphone (iPhone, Blackberry, etc) registered on your account, even if you did not buy it from Rogers but it is registered on your account, then you will NOT be able to upgrade to another Smartphone (iPhone) until you have reached the 24 month (2 year) mark in your contract since your last upgrade/activation.
At that time, 2 years in or later, your pricing will look like this:
- 16GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White with 3 Year Voice/Data plan – $199 or more/less
- 32GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White with 3 Year Voice/Data plan – $299 or more/less
For the above scenario only, alternatively, if you do not already have a data plan, you could get a data plan and then cancel it and pay the $100 cancellation fee.
You can also get the iPhone 3G “S” without a data plan, but you pay a heavy $200 premium. (Getting a data plan however gets you promotional pricing). The premium is shown below:
- 16GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White with a 3 Year Voice plan but no Data plan – $399 or more/less
- 32GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White with 3 Year Voice plan but no Data plan – $499 or more/less
In other words, everyone that got the iPhone 3G on July 11, 2008 (or any other Smartphone), your next Smartphone upgrade will be available July 11, 2010 (or 2 years from the last upgrade/activation), according to the upgrade policy.
However, do understand that when Rogers/Fido say you are “eligible” to upgrade, upgrading to a new smartphone (iPhone) is not the case. You may be “eligible” to upgrade, but you will only be eligible for a non-smartphone.
Moreover, Fido customers may use their FidoDollars towards an upgrade.
———-
Outright Pricing (No Contract)
———-
So if you are not eligible for a smartphone (iPhone) and you are using a smartphone right now on your account and you have a voice/data plan, then your options to buy the iPhone 3GS outright are below:
- 16GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $699
- 32GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White – $799
———-
You have a non-smartphone and are 1 year or more into contract
———-
As of August 21 2009, this policy has been changed.
If you are an existing Rogers/Fido customer and are not using a smartphone device or a smartphone device is not registered on your account, you may upgrade to the iPhone 3G “S” so long as your account has reached atleast its 12 24 month mark since your last activation/upgrade.
At that time, 1 year in, your pricing will look like this:
- 16GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White with a 3 Year Voice/Data plan – $299 or more/less
- 32GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White with a 3 Year Voice/Data plan – $399 or more/less
For the above scenario only, alternatively, you could get a data plan and then cancel it and pay the $100 cancellation fee.
You can also get the iPhone 3G “S” without a data plan, but you pay a heavy $200 premium. (Getting a data plan however gets you promotional pricing). The premium is shown below:
- 16GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White with a 3 Year Voice plan but no Data plan – $499 or more/less
- 32GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White with 3 Year Voice plan but no Data plan – $599 or more/less
If you held out for 2 years or more, after 2 years in or later, your pricing will look like this:
- 16GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White with a 3 Year Voice/Data plan – $199 or more/less
- 32GB iPhone 3G “S” in Black or White with a 3 Year Voice/Data plan – $299 or more/less
For the above scenario only, alternatively, you could get a data plan and then cancel it and pay the $100 cancellation fee.

Rogers can blow my iDick!!!
No comment on this comment! 😉
Amen
Agreed! Im debating now if I should even sign up for a 3 year contract on the iPhone 3GS. But either way, im gonna get the 6GB data for a 3year contract. So why not do everything at once….?
Stupid Robbers!
LOLLLLL
Robber’s sucks. They’re going to take away the tethering???? That’s BS!
Yes, that is BS! Wow, just wow! 🙁
Thank you for this concise and thorough summary of the quagmire that is Rogers Wireless policy.
Just to be succinct about tethering though: This is all moot if we simply jailbreak and use our old favs for tethering.
Please excuse my rather poetic use of the English language in my above post.
I would however like to thank the author of the post above for giving us the this information.
arrr! we are 17 juin 12:20 AM and the 3.0 is not there! 🙁
What do you mean by a registered smartphone? Could I use a dumbphone and make Rogers think I don’t have a smartphone and upgrade, or no?
No
When the iPhone 3G camed to Rogers, you had to get necessarily a Data Plan at any Rogers Store except if you would call Customer Service and get it ordered by phone. Is the case of the iPhone 3G S the same thing? + If I have 4 phones on my account and only 1 iPhone 3G, does it mean I’m able to get an iPhone 3G S for one of the other phones?
thanks for replying back
It works by phone number. Which phone number has the 3G cant upgrade right away.
You need a data plan for promo pricing
my 6GB data can no longer be used for tethering after Dec.31???? WTF!?
Even with jailbroken iPhones using PDAnet!? Even BlackBerries using TetherBerry!? What about people using their SIM card on Rocket Sticks?
Rocket Sticks are different.
You can still use tethering, you just need to pay for it.
This guide doesnt cover jailbreaking.
I’m going to explain to them nicely how I contribute over $1104/year to them and would appreciate not getting tethering taken away!
Their CSR’s have no remorse. They don’t care. They follow the company line, that’s it. Thank you and come again!
I was in a Rogers the other day, The sales rep told me he could sell me an iphone with voice only and block 3g network on his end and showed me on the sample iphone how to block 3g on the iphone. soooo i dont know why theres such emphasis on MUST having a data plan. Many people just know how to use their words like good canadians and express they dont need it.
What if I called Rogers and said…..
“Whats cheaper? Giving me the new iPhone 3GS for $299 or your house in flames”.
Do you think that would work?
No.
Actually, I think they would notify the police and have them arrest you. I honestly wouldnt do that.
LOL Go with the house in flames idea! 😛
I’m just joking around!!!!
Looks like I’ll wait to see what the going rate will be on eBay or kijji or wait to see if Robbers lowers the price in 2-3 months with buying one out-right.
Roger/Fido have monopoly on iPhone in Canadian market! I hate them, but I luv my iPhone.
* 16GB iPhone 3G “S†in Black or White with 3 Year Voice/Data plan – $199
* 32GB iPhone 3G “S†in Black or White with 3 Year Voice/Data plan – $299
Alternatively, you could get a data plan and then cancel it and pay the $100 cancellation fee.
* 16GB iPhone 3G “S†in Black or White with a 3 Year Voice plan but no Data plan – $399
Wouldn’t a 16g Iphone with a canceled fee be 299? why 399? if its originally 199 plus 100 to cancel? is this a mistake on the authors post or am i missing something
Im not adding the cancellation fee there. I am only showing device pricing under different scenarios.
Isn’t there still the 3 year cancellation as well? Am I missing something? Shouldn’t it be $199 + $100 ECF Data + $400 ECF Contract = $699? You cant get the 199 without a 3 year term so that ECF would have to be included too right? Unless you bought it out right $699 + $100 ECF Data = $799 because you must have at least data? Or am I just too tired to comprehend what’s going lol
Not sure that it will do anything, but I created a petition.

What do you mean by a phone being “registered on your account”? Does this mean that just by sticking our sim cards in a smartphone, we lose HUP eligibility? I’m a little confused.
In theory, yes.
But I believe you actually have to have the IMEI registered on the account, which is done by calling into Rogers/Fido. Actually using a smartphone, I do not think will cause a problem.
That’s the impression I was under. Thanks for clearing that up 🙂
So Rogers will really take tethering away? I was wondering if we could PRETEND it wasn’t for the cash grab.
I’m just curious as to what excuse they could give IF they cut us off. At the moment I’m thinking the tethering plan may be some thing like $5-10 to access the service which I’ll admit won’t get me raging…
I will, I’m already paying $30/month for Data. I’m paying $93/month for everything. I don’t need to pay $100+ for using the data I pay for on my computer.
Rogers can suck a big fat dick, i just love how they love to screw over customers bastards
I’m going with Fido And the voice plan of 100 minutes for $25 and adding $5 for 5:00 nights and $10 for Visual Voice mail value pack and finally $30 for 6 gb of data. Does that mean I still have to pay $50 more for the 32 gb iPhone?
Yes
There is a much easier way to enable tethering, by opening and installing a carrier specific Profile on your iPhone:
Open the following link in Safari on iPhone 3.0 to enable tethering with Rogers: http://iphone3.gs/setup/rogers.mobileconfig
Open this folloing link in Safari on iPhone 3.0 to enable tethering with Fido: http://iphone3.gs/setup/fido.mobileconfig
To disable and uninstall the carrier Profile: Settings > General > Profile
can anyone confirm this?
Yes it works.
It worked for me. I downloaded the link from Safari. I wasn’t able to connect via USB, but Bluetooth works fine.
… and I have a 500 mg data plan.
Just wondering, if I am with rogers and my contract is over with them, can I consider myself as “new customer” above??
thx in advance!!
Not really, but you should get “new” customer pricing though, especially if its been more than 2 years since your last upgrade
What is AT&T doing for tethering? Other iPhone carriers?
This is completely lame of Rogers/Fido and all their little tricks. C’mon 1GB minimum? What’s the difference? They only offered 6GB for a limited time then went back to 500 MB. Sneaky.
AT&T will have tethering “sometime in the summer” … and MMS later in August, I believe. No word on prices/plans yet.
I wonder will this work for existing Fido/Rogers customer that are over 1 year into their current contract.
So I believe Fido/Rogers are allow their customers to switch over to eachother without paying $400 cancellation fee as long as you are over 1 year into your current contract. So I am with Fido now just over 1 year, if I switch over to Rogers on June 19th, I believe I will become a new customer to Rogers. So that means I can get the Iphone 3gs for $199 or $299 as long as I have a data plan and a voice plan.
Since I am not able to upgrade to any smartphone until a year from now, this might turns out to be a solution for existing fido/rogers customer that are not able to upgrade to a smartphone. Can anyone confirm this??
Yea you can do this, but you need to make 100% sure they dont charge you the cancellation fees
Well, if all this is true, it looks like I qualify for the HUP of $299, for the 32GB! Guess I’ll find out Friday.
Taking away tethering in December, so they can charge us more to use it later, is ridiculous.
But you will still have to add 3 more years to your contract which is insane. I’d rather pay full price for an iPhone. Getting raped in the a$$ for 5 years is beyond madness.
fuck fido rogers, greedy bastards i hope that they fry
Your post indicates that you can just use an older itunes version and carrier file to keep tethering but that doesn’t work. I tried many times and kept getting an error in itunes saying “You need to upgrade itunes to access this iPhone”.
what version of itunes are you running?
The exact version
Ooo maybe that’s the problem. I was running 8.2.13
The Rogers in Crowfoot Calgary are such dicks. That’s why they’re only getting 1 or 2.
1 Question. So if i go online to my Rogers account and can upgrade to the iPhone 3G, does that mean I can upgrade to the 3GS??
A better test is a Blackberry.
wow..
free tethering for 6 months…. you’ll never get that anywhere else.
The deeper we travel into the iPhone / Canadian adventure, the better Telus keeps looking. Anyone know there ETA on GSM ?
HEY for those “free” months of tethering- everyone max the fuck out of your 6 gig monthly allotment… lets have some fun with this here.
gotta love the ass raping we all have to take for the iphone privilege… i escaped from telus only to be locked in another cell with a bubba named fido/rogers….
I hear ya!
For totally brand new customers, it is possible to buy the iPhone 3GS without any contract?
You guys do know that Rogers turned on their tethering last night – if you have 3.0 GM installed? Mine works great. Check for updates in iTunes, and there will be a carrier update. Once applied, you need to reset your phone before the option will be enabled.
USB tethering worked immediately. Bluetooth took a bit of figuring out, but it then worked very nicely.
I don’t agree with the 2 years to upgrade deal about the smart phones and 1 year for dummy phones if you got the iphone last july….i just logged into my rogers wireless account online…clicked UPGRADE TO IPHONE 3G, and the message i got was:
Your Hardware Upgrade can not be completed at this time.
Based on your last hardware upgrade on this wireless number, you are not eligible for an upgrade at this time. You will be eligible for another hardware upgrade after: 7/11/2009
Note the date as 2009!!!!! i think there is a lot of misinformation and speculation going around with pricing…and this is all due to rogers reps not knowing much and giving misinformation. They’ve been really pushing the voice/data, but there are still stores around that will sell you the iphone without charging you 100 bucks to have to get and then cancel data….
my advice…wait and see what will happen after july 11, 2009 if you got your iphone on release day last year…i have a feeling it will be the same as before
99 for 8g, add $50 if you are under 30.01
199 for 16gs, add $50 if you are under 30.01
299 for 32 gs, add $50 if you are under 30.01
too much speculation going on
Yes, you are eligible to upgrade July 11, 2009, but it wont be to a smartphone, especially if you have a smartphone now.
WOW, this is BS! Robbers is fricken greedy!
@X1Zero
Hey man. I tried emailing you, any luck getting it? IF not, whats ur email again? or check out the forums for my questions 😉
Thanks man for this post, really handy to know whats going on!
how about fido dollars and pre-payed cards plans?
That will be based when you buy. I didnt include it above because there is too much variation
Great article! A great resource for anyone using or thinking of getting the iPhone. I’m wondering about if the change in the tethering policy on Dec 31/09 will be enough to get you out of your contract. In the states, if a wireless provider changes your contract, you can cancel it using a “Material Adverse” Clause. I don’t know if the same thing applies to Canadians but this seems like it could be a way out of the contract.
Also, if you Twitter, @keithmcarthur seems to be a good source to vent your frustrations about tethering and other issues with Fido/Rogers.
Why is the iPhone 3G 16GB, and the new iPhone 3GS 16GB the same price of $699 to buy outright?
Makes no sense!
We only report the news!
In any case, as things change, which they constantly are, we will make necessary updates
@Jocelyn,
that will be up to the sales rep you talk to
Thanks for your response.
Also, do you know if the 3GS required an in-store activation?
Well, whether you do it over the phone or instore, both scenarios the iPhone account will have to be activated.
For the case of plugging it into iTunes to bypass the lock screen, if you do it over the phone, you plug it into iTunes yourself when it arrives. If you do it in store, they can do it for you, but if you’re like me and dont like people touching your stuff, you can ask them to not do it and let you because all the information they need is on the back of the box
So it is possible to buy the 3GS without any contract and activate it myself at home? My plan is to use the SIM card from my PetroCanada mobilty cell phone with the 3GS (the SIM card can be used without the need to unlock the phone, as PetroCanada uses Rogers’ network).
If the SIM will work in the iPhone, the answer is yes!
Great! Last question: Do I need something special to activate myself the phone?
Just the latest version of iTunes and your SIM card in the iPhone.
Plug it into iTunes and done!
Thank you very much for all information you provide!
I’m prett sure the contract I signed specifically stated that I was allowed to tether. Wouldn’t that be breaching our contract.
X1Zero, I appreciate you compiling all the information for everyone to read but when you’re writing articles, do you mind putting sources in? It will make the article more credible and easier to follow for people who wish to follow up with the source. Specifically, I want to know where you heard the end of tethering on dec31 and the smartphone HUP policy.
Thanks
All source info:
http://www.rogers.com/web/content/wireless-products/iphone_faqs?setLanguage=en&cm_sp=Consumer-_-Wireless_iPhone3Gs_0609_Eng-_-3GsPrelaunch_LowerBadge
Check your link, it doesn’t answer either of my two specific questions…
“To use tethering or wireless modem functionality you require the new iPhone 3G S, or an iPhone 3G that has been upgraded with the new iPhone OS 3.0 software. Until December 31, 2009, if you have subscribed to a data plan which includes at least 1GB of data you may use tethering as part of the volume of data included in your plan at no additional charge. Tethering cannot be used with data plans of less then 1GB.”
The above does not mean that existing data plans will be charged. I recognize that Rogers and other cell phone companies have been known to breach contracts and change them (like the incoming text messages charge). However, it is possible for customers to take legal action if this is the case. If the contract I signed states that I’m allowed to tether when I signed it, I see no reason why that should change a third of the way through my term. (Kind of defeats the point of the contract…)
The only thing your contract guarantees is your basic voiceplan and minutes. For example, your $25 voice plan with 200 minutes. Thats it.
Everything else such as fees, add ons, value packs, data, upgrades, all of it, can be modifying by Rogers or Fido as they see fit
Well the unfortunate thing is they CAN change it. In the contract it strictly says that you are price/change protected on the voice portion only. Wireless essentials are NOT protected and can be changed with a minimum of 30 days notice. Contracts are drafted for their benefit not ours. At the end of the day only about 45% of your plan is protected from increases and changes.
All of this comes from Rogers and I am the source, just leave it at that.
99% of this stuff is not public and extremely confidential, which is why I will never post the source so it cannot be traced back to me. You may doubt me, but later on, you’ll see that I was right.
As for the tethering, I posted the screenshot of where that came from above.
I didn’t mean for you to become defensive. With other journalists around the world and on the internet (See: http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/06/15/rogers-fido-no-contract-iphone-3g-s-pricing-revealed-eh/), you usually specify the source, even if it is as simple as stating it is an anonymous insider.
I don’t mean to lecture you on how you should write, I was only asking nicely =). Stating that you are the source and we should all believe you is rather obnoxious and arrogant don’t you think?
hahahaha!
I wasn’t being defensive, I just do not need to prove to people that I am the source.
I report the news, I don’t start or care for rumors. Whether you take it or leave it is up to you.
If you want, you can always assume its an insider source, but because I am getting the information from myself directly from Rogers, I need not state a source. I am the “insider” in other words.
Stating that I am the source and you should believe me is being obnoxious and arrogant…well, its in line with my personality, so be it, but I never asked you to believe me, but you will see eventually that I am right. But like I said, you can either not believe me and be misinformed when you get to Rogers/Fido to make your purchase OR you can read what is posted above and become a more enlightened consumer when making your Rogers/Fido purchase.
This is what I suggest for you. Just don’t believe me. Then when you get to Rogers/Fido, ask questions that I answer above and atleast then you will feel okay with believing what I said because you would have heard it from another source.
😉
Plus, you need to consider something. It took me 9 hours to write this after getting everything together. Why would I make it up or make sure it was not 100% accurate? Food for thought.
Geez X1Zero … that sounded a little defensive! lol … jokes 😉
It’s too early for this.
Lets get back to roasting Rogers/Fido!
X1Zero: My above question might have been missed …
2009-06-17 05:17:27
Isn’t there still the 3 year cancellation as well? Am I missing something? Shouldn’t it be $199 + $100 ECF Data + $400 ECF Contract = $699? You cant get the 199 without a 3 year term so that ECF would have to be included too right? Unless you bought it out right $699 + $100 ECF Data = $799 because you must have at least data? Or am I just too tired to comprehend what’s going lol
Hi Fragility,
What is the 3 Year cancellation for?
You know what I just re-read it … I am tired … I now see that you were showing an example of how to purchase the phone without data … my bad 🙂
Excellent.
I honestly wish more users were like you. 🙂
Re-reading something is so much more beneficial than asking a question!
(when you cancel data, the max cancellation is $100)
Hi, I just got my iphone 3G from Hong Kong where it is possible to purchase a factory un-locked phone (they can’t sell locked units there). Cost a bit more (sadly didn’t anticipate the launch of the new 3GS and the resulltant price drop of the 3G – my friend bought me the phone before we checked on this price drop) Spilt milk, no tears.
Newbie question? havent’ upgraded my data plan, etc with Rogers yet, just using wireless networks for the most part as my existing Data Plan lite did allow 3G service (though I expect the charges will be higher for the little bit of playing I did using Rogers rather than wireless). Any tips on what would be best data plan to buy (I am a year or so into my current 3 year contract). I have not got the new OS yet (sometime today I assume it will be generally available). Don’t really know what volume of data I will need but gather that 1GB minimum is necessary to allow tethering etc. Sorry if this is too open-ended a question
Anyone know what the absolute minimum plan required is to get a 3GS from Rogers? I’m thinking of getting my wife one so I can giver her my 3G. I’ve seen the plans on their web page, but I suspect there’s cheaper, unpublished combinations.
Is there still an option for a totally new customer to Rogers to get the $20 EPP plan with the $35 IPhone Data Package on the new 3GS? I understand that the phone itself will cost $50 more due to the taking a plan under $30/month.
I just want to make sure this is still an option before I march in there on Friday and demand it 🙂 Thanks,
Kev
Is there still an option for a totally new customer to Rogers to get the $20 EPP Plan + $35 IPhone data package on the 3GS?
I understand the phone will cost $50 more because of it.
You know Kevin, that is a REALLY good question.
I have not been able to get a confirmed yes/no on whether the EPP plan is still here. I know 100% for sure its gone in Quebec, but in BC, Alberta, the Midwest and the rest of the East, I am not sure.
That is something I would take up with a Rogers Store or the call center.
But that is a killer setup for a plan though…
Yeah… I’m hoping so!
I’m in Alberta… I don’t need to do any tethering, so I’d be totally happy with 500mb of data. I figure if you have a phone that is as awesome as an iPhone, why would you even need to do any tethering?
I’m going to try for the EPP on friday anyways… 🙂
I have a feeling it is still around because I have not seen any internal posting regarding the plan expiring. Then again, maybe there wasn’t a posting.
@Kevin: In the spirit of breaking the 100 comments for a post here on iphoneincanada.ca, you need to tether because of….. Flash video. It still doesn’t work well on the iphone (some argue or at all). If you want to stream any movies, you’re going to need to tether. When is flash coming to the iphone btw?
I have the 17.50 Plan atm + 30$/6gb + 15$ visual voicemail pack. You save about 10$ with all the other fees by chosing the 35$ pack. Which isn’t really worth it when you can get 6gb and not worry about anything.
What is your total monthly costs .. more or less.. . $35.00 or ??
Seems like Rogers will lose a ton of money this way. People will upgrade the software 3.0 now and just wait for the new 4G coming out next summer.
Everyone should just skip the 3G S version and fuck over Rogers sales. Just wait for the new one coming out next June or even earlier. It will be even better!!
So I’m curious: there are other ways to “tether” if you’ve jailbroken your phone. Will Rogers/Fido be able to block those after the end of 2009 or know if the data usage is tethering or not?
Thanks for all these posts- great insight! With all the Rogers/Fido talk, which is better (cheaper, better plans, easier to deal with)? Rogers or Fido, in Vancouver? I’ve never had either.
I haven’t seen the answer to my question anywhere…to whit, I am 6 months into my new contract with Rogers. I (stupidly) “upgraded” to a non-smartphone in December. Does this mean that I’m on the hook for the entire cost of purchasing an iPhone? Will Rogers even *let* me buy an iPhone? I only ask here because the Rogers employees I’ve talked to (Calgary – Crowfoot Crossing & Market Mall, I’m looking at you!) have been extraordinarily unhelpful. 🙁
Am keeping my eye on several Ebay auctions, just in case.
From Rogers FAQ (I take this to mean that if someone has a smartphone, but no data, they can upgrade after 12 months):
”
How long do I have to be with Rogers before I can get an upgrade?
Description
Length of time to be able to request an upgrade.
Answer
If you are a Rogers Wireless customer currently using a Smartphone on 1) a Data plan or 2) Voice & Data bundled plan and you wish to upgrade to a new Smartphone, you are eligible to upgrade after 24 months. For customers with only Voice service (no Data plan) wishing to upgrade to a Smartphone or customers upgrading from a non-Smartphone to a Smartphone or Data device, you are eligible to upgrade after 12 months. Your account must also be in good credit standing at the time of the upgrade.
Note: A Smartphone is a handheld Data device such as a Blackberry or iPhone.
