DAVE Wireless Becomes Mobilicity, Launches In Canada Spring 2010

WIND Mobile was not the only carrier that bought some wireless spectrum and was planning a Canadian wireless launch. Another wireless company, at the time named “DAVE” wireless, was also prepping a Canadian launch of its own.

Well DAVE wireless is almost ready to launch this Spring 2010, but the first order of business is a brand name change. DAVE wireless is now known as “Mobilicity” and will begin offering AWS 3G services (like WIND) this Spring 2010.

The initial launch city will be Toronto, followed by Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, and Ottawa throughout 2010. The new carrier will mark Canada’s seventh major cellular provider brand, including Rogers, Fido, Telus, Bell, Virgin, and WIND (not including Solo, Koodo, PC Mobile, etc).

The company plans to launch with various unlimited plan packages that are contract-free and offer various Nokia, Blackberry, and Sony Ericsson devices costing within the $100 range.

Whether the iPhone makes an appearance is unknown, but that is unlikely in its current form both because of price and GSM frequency support.

An other company that we won't see in Quebec… We will have great competition with videotron… Yeah right!!!

Just as a side note, if you're not including Solo or Koodo as mobile providers, you shouldn't include Fido either. They're all discount brands of their respective companies.

I agree with DjDATZ. Plus, Bell owns Virgin, so technically Mobilicity is Canada's fifth cellular provider. I'm glad to see more players though.

I'd still call Fido an official carrier. They're large enough with
both prepaid and contracts available.

Can you get data plans on koodo and solo? Looks like no, at least
according their sites.

Like a $30 blackberry plan or $25 500mb?

Virgin, Fido and WIND can.

But they're owned by Rogers… I'd consider them a subsidiary like Virgin Mobile or Kodo. I don't consider Fido a separate entity anymore.

But they're still not separate entities like WIND and Mobilicity. I agree that Mobilicity is the 5th, not the seventh, mobile provider to enter Canada. Still better than three, but it's a start.

Fair enough.

For me, if a carrier has a 500MB data plan, they are an “official”
carrier.

It's the 5th. Avoid confusion. When the money you spend goes to the Ted Rogers family empire it's hardly it's own entity.

Eh… I don't consider a subsidiary a seperate carrier just because of the plans they have: it's who owns them.

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that. 🙂

Eh… I don't consider a subsidiary a seperate carrier just because of the plans they have: it's who owns them. When you talk about competition in Canada, there's always mention of “The Big Three”; they're big because they own most, if not all, of the smaller “carriers”.

Guess we'll have to agree to disagree on that. 🙂

Mobilicity is going bankrupt. 4 of there largest corporate stores are closing down. The one in the Heartland Town Center, Mississauga is their biggest corporate store and it is closing its doors next week!!!

They have lost gas and that is what happen when you try to take on the big players without any cash in your pocket.

First Mobilicity threatened to sue Rogers and now they have chickened out!

Closing down of 4 (some say 6) of their largest corporate stores is a clear case of Cut and run!

Closing down 4 or 6 corporate stores for financial or business reasons is not the issue. The issue is their credibility. They threatened to sue Rogers but chickened out, they launched unlimited Pakistan Plan but chickened out, they have closed most of their major corporate stores and claim to open new smaller ones – will they chicken out on this as well?

There are a total of 6 stores that have been shut down. I just saw another one in Brampton which is shutting down next week. If you don’t believe me go and see it for yourself. The proof is in the pudding!

The one on Queens and Brittania in Mississauga was the first to go.
Wind may be, just may be, able to stand up to Chatr but Mobilicity is history! They will be better off suing Rogers and living off any money they get from them.

Mobilicity is claiming it has grown by 30% over the past 3 months. Mobilicity may be growing by signing up people who sell 50 other things as well. You cannot equate your corporate store with a pawn shop which also sells Mobilicity. WInd had it right from the word go. They never signed up pawn shops to sell their phones. No wonder Mobilcity is shutting down 10 of their own stores and signing 15 pawn shops and claiming they have grown 30%. This is the worst kind of spin I have ever seen in Corporate America.
