Well, here we go again. The ‘leaked iPhone’ story thickens as Apple has finally broken its silence and requested to Gizmodo to return the iPhone. The letter reads:
Dear Mr. Lam,
It has come to our attention that GIZMODO is currently in possession of a device that belongs to Apple. This letter constitutes a formal request that you return the device to Apple. Please let me know where to pick up the unit.

…and here is GIZMODO’S reply:
Bruce, thanks.

Happy to have you pick this thing up. Was burning a hole in our pockets. Just so you know, we didn’t know this was stolen when we bought it. Now that we definitely know it’s not some knockoff, and it really is Apple’s, I’m happy to see it returned to its rightful owner.
P.S. I hope you take it easy on the kid who lost it. I don’t think he loves anything more than Apple.
Wow. Okay so Apple is getting their iPhone back. This entire ‘leaked’ iPhone story has been indeed TRUE. So, what can we expect in June when Apple releases their final build of the next iPhone? We’ll never know. But one thing is for certain–good luck seeing the Gizmodo guys being invited to the next Apple Event!

There's something that just feels weird about the is whole thing. It really does seem set up, doesn't it? An underhanded way of “beta testing” a new design? See if anyone liked it? I mean, this wasn't just a little blog story, this went as far as CNN.
your right about that if people like the alloy style trim and no one did, i doubt if anything they just let someone go la de da in a bar with a protoype, im sure this whole thing is an apple stunt, and the real thing wont look like that flat back come on the way my 3gs is right now is perfect i hope they dont change the design just put the front facing camera
I love the look of this lost-stolen iphone. It looks so much more like an Apple product. It now resembles more the iMac, MacBooks, and iPad. I really hope the new iPhone looks like the onw Gizmodo got its hands on.
I welcome the change in design. Getting tired of the current look. Hope it's a little more sleek than this prototype, though.
I'll add a big +1 to the stunt part. Apple has to keep our interest piqued somehow for the next couple months til the new phones.
But I personally don't hate the new design. It obviously won't look as sleek without a curved back, but maybe this too is part of Apple's plan: gauge customer response to a new look iPhone. Assuming there's still time to change it.

I don't buy it. That letter could have come from anyone. I could create an identical letter and print it on high quality stationary. I could even use more professional language, considering this one seems kind of informal.. But that doesn't mean that the phone is mine. And I doubt Gizmodo would be so gullible.

naw, it seems too “perfect” that the dude who aquired it off the floor happened to know to contact GIZMODO. I think it's a ploy by apple to get initial customer reactions. Gray will be fine, he was most likely part of this ploy set by apple. I'm in IT and I can tell you that when there's a product that's kept this secret they tend to do the initial beta testing internally, and only move to external testing once the device has officially been announced…..as far as I'm concerned this Apple tactic is INGENIUS and will probably set the tone for other companies marketing schemes……just like the original iPhone did 😛
The shape doesn't surprise me at all… just look at their unibody notebook line.
First, the letter looks really fake so that's one fake thing already.
Second, the iPhone found at a bar ? That's a major lie, the iPhone was stolen from Apple Campus and Gizmodo is trying to make us believe that it was find at a bar (?), forgotten by an I.T (wich I doubt is an actual APPLE employee or is really the one involved). (BTW: The guy isn't even a fan of any apple product on his facebook page…sounds really weird for an Apple important employee)
Finally, the iPhone is a prototype. The interns are really nice! And we finally can say that we have an iPhone with features that other competitors don't have except the Apple Store and simple UI (the front facing camera).
I'm sure we'll get to see some minimal changes in the exterior design late in June, but GIZMODO won't get that privilege and Apple will decide to invite iPhone in Canada instead!! :p
Anyways, I wonder how mad Steve Job got when he saw the article on his iPad and had to boot up his Macbook air to be able to watch the 2mins videos because his iPad doesn't load flash components :).
The leak is just too perfect…what's the chance of an iphone found in a bar ends up with a tech blog ?!? Apple has done an excellent job of guarding secret so far and somehow this one just slips ? Let see what happen in June 🙂
But it begs the question: Why wouldn't Apple just have a normal focus group if they wanted to test the design with people? Now the competition may (or may not) have an idea where Apple is headed which seems VERY unlike Apple.
