Google Nexus S: Enough to Switch Away from your iPhone 4?

Yesterday Google unveiled the Google Nexus S–the successor to the Nexus One. The new Nexus S is manufactured by Samsung and runs the latest Android OS, 2.3 Gingerbread.  Is this phone enough to lure you away from your iPhone 4?

Nexus S is the next generation of Nexus devices, co-developed by Google and Samsung. The latest Android platform (Gingerbread), paired with a 1 GHz Hummingbird processor and 16GB of memory, makes Nexus S one of the fastest phones on the market. It comes pre-installed with the best of Google apps and enabled with new and popular features like true multi-tasking, Wi-Fi hotspot, Internet Callling, NFC support, and full web browsing. With this device, users will also be the first to receive software upgrades and new Google mobile apps as soon as they become available. For more details, visit http://www.google.com/nexus.

Will the Google Nexus S Work in Canada? Pedram from AndroidinCanada.ca states:

Because this is an AWS T-Mobile phone, you will only be able to use it on Wind or Mobilicity if you want 3G here in Canada in its current form. That’s if you don’t think you’re patient enough and thinking about importing it in. Hopefully it’ll have more carrier band support like the Nexus One eventually did.

A couple things I noticed from yesterday’s announcement. Google’s Nexus S website is very similar to Apple’s iPhone 4 page. The videos of the Google employee reviewing features is a bit awkward to watch. Engadget has a full preview of the Nexus S, and they reckon it’s blazing fast.

For those deciding between Android and iOS, the competition is really heating up. What is enticing about the Nexus S is the fully unlocked price of $529. Compare that to an unlocked iPhone 4 and you’re saving a couple hundred dollars.

Anyone out there keen on switching it up to the Nexus S?

Competition is great, but Apple still leads in apps I’m addicted to, plus I have a Mac I control with my iPhone. I was debating & debating a possible change, but I’m one of the late folks who’s done months of research on the iPhone 4 B4 getting it; hopefully next wk, but an order placed doesn’t guarantee I get it, and it’s no lemon. :o)

Makes me wonder if thats why Rogers keeps tightening the belt around its current customers because they are slowly straying away, and rogers need to regain some of that money by cutting services and tweaking packages to gain extra income to cover their overhead costs.

I’ve already moved to android and gave my iphone 4 to my wife. Apps are coming here slowly but surely. I will get the Nexus S if either my contract is over with fido and I move to WIND or next gen of Nexus S supports the FIDO frequencies; whichever comes first.

when apps are as readily available and on par quality-wise, I will happily switch. I am so tired of being told how my phone should look and act. Yes Apple has been loosening the reigns as of late, but still being totally locked out of being able to customize my phone without jailbreaking is really annoying.

I admit, googles android phones are looking better and better. I do often check them out to see what’s new on the market, but I have so much faith and respect for Apple that I would rather wait to see what Apple releases next launch before I jump ship.

There is always the illness of shiny rock syndrome too

I am excited! One of the top reasons I went with iPhone 4 was that there was Galaxy S was not available unlocked.

Looks like I could sell my iPhone 4 and get a Nexus S with money left over to replace my key apps!

I have a Nexus One which has been a fantastic phone. Happy Google will be producing a successor since we need at least one decent phone that is available unlocked at a ‘reasonable’ price.

Yeah. If, my 3 year contract with an iPhone 3G ever expires or at least ever lets me upgrade to a new iPhone or nexus S.

I thought Mobilicity shared Bell’s towers in the East and Telus’ in the West… D’oh! Sorry… tower != transmitting frequency/standard. Hmm… Mobilicity and Wind should “share” their AWS equipment to speed up rollout.

Can we (I) get a refresher on the current state of technology? CDMA, GSM AWS, who’s got what and where are we going with it?

I think the improved touchscreen and better graphics processor alone would be worth the upgrade. But I’m definitely going to wait until the HSPA model.

I put my deposit down on the Nexus S. You have no idea how much I am looking forward to ditching my iPhone! I am so tired of Apple dictating how my phone should work for me, so tired of still waiting for basic features that cell phones have had since the late 90’s, and even better…since I have a 3GS, we are being treated like 3G owners, Apple gets us excited over an upcoming update only to find out it will not be available for your model. Buh-Bye Apple! Hello Android!
I find it hilarious when I read people commenting how Apple has so much more to offer in the App Store than the Android Market….um, ya….sure, Apple offers a million more garbage apps that make flatulent sounds. Just want I need! *rolls eyes*

In no time I’ll get my hands on a Nexus. Apple sucks and the iphone itself is simply boring. I’m with WIND and I pay $35 a month for unlimited everything and no contract. No other company can beat that! So for sure I’m going to buy the Nexus this weekend, and guesswhat, I’m not telling my wife!
