WhatsApp Messenger Is Currently FREE in the App Store
My favourite cross platform messaging app for the iPhone is WhatsApp Messenger, one of the most popular apps in the App Store. It allows me to communicate with anyone who is using an iPhone, Blackberry, Android, or Nokia device. You can group chat, send pictures, videos, audio, and even share your location.

WhatsApp Messenger is regularly priced at 99 cents, but it’s currently FREE in the App Store. Click here to download! I just spoke with Jan Koum, the creator of WhatsApp and he said this is a temporary promo. Get downloadin’!
Now that’s WhatsApp is free, you can shut up those cheapo friends of yours!
Thanks to Pat O’Brien for the email!

No single one of these alternate text message solutions are popular enough to be worthwhile, not to mention they lack any real integration into iOS, which isn’t their fault but still presents an issue.
They are great for the kind of thing most people use Skype for, cheap/free unlimited conversations with people they contact frequently. Besides that usage case, it’s just way easier to send an SMS/MMS.

Would Whatsapp charges money for future updates if I install the app for free now (instead of paying $0.99)?

No. If that happens, delete, and re-download if you get the “This update is
only for paid versions” message.

Does anyone know how long this promo will be going on for?

The developer said either a couple days, or weeks…undecided. I’d download
right away. 🙂
Ya I was just asking to see how long I would have to persuade my friends to switch to WhatsApp from LiveProfile
It’s not free when I go to it.
click download it’ll be free
Wouldn’t it say FREE if it were? It says 99cents in itunes.
Strange…the web view shows free, iTunes shows 99 cents. Maybe the promo
ended already?? ;(
When I clicked on your iTunes link in the article, it said 99 cents for me there as well. But now when I went there again, it says free. However, iTunes itself still says 99 cents.
I’m emailing the developer, will report back.

Those SMS replacement apps are really useful to send text messages with characters like êëèç or any other characters that will make the iPhone switch to Unicode (70 characters max in one SMS)… Because those SMS usually do not go through the inter-carriers gateway…
I can tell from your post that you haven’t used whatsapp yet. It’s the only app on my phone that I couldn’t live without. It has perfectly great integration into the iOS. It makes the built in SMS look dated and boring. 99 cents is a steal, but for free it’s a no brainer!
Apple will definitely have something like this in the next iOS. Whatsapp is the iPhone version of BBM but better. I have friends that switched from a blackberry to an iPhone because of this app. That’s how great it is.

FML . paid for it yesterday !
whatsapp is not as good as everyone makes it out to be
there is still a delay when connecting (no delay for BBM)
there is still a considerable transfer time when sending pics and audio notes (much smaller transfer times for BBM)
the user interface is not as slick and user friendly as liveprofile (although I am not a big fan of liveprofile either)
i don’t understand all the hype about whatsapp and definitely don’t agree that it is better than BBM
WhatsApp >>> LiveProfile
I didn’t download few times ago. Now I want to download and it’s not free anymore. Does anyone know when will whatsapp messenger be free to download again?
