A new publication by CNET claims to have unveiled the last big project which Steve Jobs was working on and it was not the iPhone 4S. Rather he was deeply involved in everything from concept to design of the all new, redesigned iPhone 5. In a research note by Ashok Kumar, an analyst at Rodman & Renshaw, the source found out that iPhone 5 project is going to be a “cult classic” because of Steve Jobs’ deep involvement.

In the note, Kumar said the phone will have a slimmer profile and larger screen size but with the same dimensions as the iPhone 4S (the relatively-small 3.5-inch screen is not one of the 4S’ best features). The iPhone is also expected to have LTE, or Long Term Evolution–what’s sometimes referred to as 4G.
Another source, who I spoke with this week and who claims to have knowledge of the redesign, said the iPhone 5 is a “complete redesign. This is a very large project that Steve dedicated all of his time to. He was not that involved in the 4S because his time was limited.”
According to Kumar’s research note, the iPhone 5 should debut around the time of Apple’s Developer’s Conference in the summer of 2012. Well that sounds a little early don’t you think?

why upset like every other piece of technology change is inevitable. Look at computers, cars, appliances, Flat screen tv’s. Better to have new technology. Just sell your 4S and buy a new phone or hold on to it for 3 years and don’t worry about it.

I’ll laugh my ass off if that comes to fruition! I’m eligible for a HU in March & specifically held off upgrading just for that very reason. It sure would suck thinking you have the latest & greatest (only to find out in 8-9 months you no longer do lol!)

I’ve decided tho that I’ll be an iPhone ‘S’ guy. My current phone is a 3GS and I’m still waiting for my reserved 4S. The S versions always have better stuff in them.
Same thing my bro’s doing. Might as well it works better with hardware upgrades. I’m not a “S” as I have the 4 but it makes sense to do it that way.
Depends on how you look at it. The non-S version, such as the next iPhone 5, will have more stuff than the S version.
This Apple’s iPhone version numbering system concept is really simple, to those of you who are completely clueless. The “S” signifies upgraded internals only. When there is a whole new number change, that signifies a whole new physical re-design AND upgraded internals.
Even then, I don’t think they’ll call it the iPhone 5. It ruins the numbering system. The iPhone 4 got its name from its generation number. It wouldn’t make sense to call the sixth iPhone, the iPhone 5.
I’ve been telling all my friends this ever since September (I’m the apple fanboy at my school so everyone’s been like “why aren’t you getting the iphone5/4s”)
Even if it were a 5 this year, I decided to wait.
And especially since there’s no redesign:
1. iPhone 6th gen would definitely have a redesign
2. A lot of new tech is just coming out, like NFC and LTE that Apple wouldn’t implement just in its infancy, but by 2012 they might finally include it.
3. I’m one three year contract; so next year summer (not trying to be like “I knew it first”, but just like I hope this article is right) I can get a contract free iPhone. However, if I upgrade now I’ll have to renew for 3 years, which I’m *sure* the iPhone 4s will be old as dirt by end of 2014
But I’m really starting to notice, these ANALysts don’t know sh!t. They’ve been spewing garbage of all varieties so they’ll always have a “right” prediction. Real sad. Pre-announcement there were all these articles on the redesigned iPhone 5. It doesnt take half a brain to think “hmmm lets say something about Steve job’s death” and submit “I’m an analyst and I think that Steve jobs was working on the iPhone 5 which will be a redesign.”

I think the release date timeline makes sense. They will probably go forward with the idea that a complete re design (ie iPhone 4/5) will last 14 – 15 months production and a facelift (ie 3GS/4S) only lasting 9 – 10 months. The iPhone 4 was so successful there’s every reason to exploit the sales by prolonging its production.
I wonder if the name will be iPhone 5 or iPhone LTE … Alla iPhone 3G?

Actually the timeline makes sense.
It would not have taken 16 months for the changes in the iphone 4s to be worked in. The release of case designs and LTE equipment in Apple stores as well as info in the Plist files shows that Iphone 5 has and is being worked on. In reality a year between phone releases is way to long in this day of better faster quicker releases by all the competition. The LTE chip from Qualcomm should be ready for primetime early next year so a release in June July would make a lot of sense.
We can only hope becasue the 4S can’t stand on it’s own for another year with all the more advance phones coming out in the next few monts.

Well maybe. I think the only delay was testing out iCloud. Remember the beta ran for quite some time so setting up iCloud probably pushed things back not building this phone. Well anyways guess we’ll see.

I saw this report late last night on another site. In my opinion, what does an ANALYST know? This rumour doesn’t hold any more weight than all the other iPhone 5 rumours that came before it, in my opinion.
I hope the new screen is only edge-to-edge on the same chassis as 4S (which it should be according to the above info)

Spoke to a software designer yesterday, who used to work for Apple. He had iCloud & iOS to play with a while ago, & seems pretty on the ball with what goes on at Apple. To summarise the discussion – Japan earthquake has delayed component availability for iPhone 5 (or whatever it’s going to be called), hence 4S release as an interim. Qualcomm’s LTE chip expected to be small enough by Spring 2012. iPhone 5 will have NFC & prob LTE & run on dual A6 processors. Likely launch Summer-Fall 2012. Do not buy a 4S, quote, unquote.
That’s exactly what I anticipated. I will definitely hold off upgrading my phone as I thought the earthquake/tsunami had most likely disrupted component availability. Plus I’ll get factory unlocked & then I’ll only ever have to worry about jb’ing (that is if I stick with Apple & there isn’t a more feature rich phone available when they launch the next iphone model).
Funny I spoke to someone just recently and he said the exact same thing! Although I think it was in a different order.

There are no plans to put dual A6’s in the next iteration of the iPhone. The next iPad will use the A6 series, not the phone. The energy (battery) required to power two A6 quad-core processors cannot be contained within a form-factor as small as the iPhone, yet. Your “source” is misinformed.

Weren;t these analyst bickering about “2 types of iphone to be release fall 2011, all new redesign iphones,” not too long ago and now they will begin abt iphone 5… None of them were even close to the outcome…
