NYT: Apple to Release Siri TV by 2013

The Apple TV rumours keep on coming!

When it was revealed that Jobs declared he’d “finally cracked” the secret to building an easy-to-use television set, and said it would have “the simplest user interface you could imagine”, many commentators assumed that he was referring to Apple’s plans to build a full-fledged television. But, according to Nick Bilton over at the New York Times, he was actually referring to Apple’s new artificial intelligent software, Siri.

According to Bilton’s sources, Apple engineers and designers have been struggling for years to find a new interface for the television. One of the biggest hurdles has been replacing the awkward remote control. They reportedly tried using iOS devices as a remotes, and even hand gestures. None of these concepts worked is a satisfying way. But then there was the “I finally cracked it” moment, when Apple realized you could just talk to your television.

Rather than fumble with several remotes, you simply talk: “Put on the next episode of the Wire”; “Play some some early Dylan”; “What’s new this week?” Siri does the rest.

The article finishes by noting that Apple is close enough that an Apple TV could be released by 2013.

Hmm and how is that going to work when there’s loud audio including talking coming out of your TV? (and what about when an ad for the Siri TV comes on)

Well right now to activate Siri, you have to press and hold a button. I assume the same would be the case with a TV. So Siri only listens when the button is pressed, and the TV volume can automatically be lowered by the TV, while Siri is active. I would assume they’re not going to get rid of remotes entirely, but rather “rethink them”, and probably include less buttons, or a touch screen instead. Plus make iDevices work as remotes as well. Or they might make you use the old-ipod-like remotes that they have now, which might work well too, with a dedicated Siri button.

iPhone, iPod Touch are already being used as remotes with HT systems.  I’m using it right now to change channels and browse the web on my HDTV connected HTPC.  There will most likely be an activate button on in the remote app to activate Siri and get it to listen.

So SIRI will be the one to kill us all eh? It is a lot less intimidating then Cyberdyne, or SkyNET ; )
