Apple Snatches The Title Of 3rd Biggest Cell Phone Manufacturer From LG Electronics

According to a fresh report (via MacRumors) by research firm IDC regarding global cell phone sales during Q4 and full-year 2011, Apple has surpassed LG Electronics to become the 3rd largest mobile phone maker. Only one year back, Apple was on the 5th spot in the largest global cell phone manufacturer’s rankings just behind ZTE, but the strong sales of iPhone 4S during the final quarter of last year have been enough to take the Cupertino giant straight up to the 3rd spot surpassing LG not only in Q4 but also in full-year numbers.

“Apple jumped into the third spot globally from the fifth spot last quarter thanks to a record-breaking quarter of shipments. That represents the Cupertino-based company’s highest-ever ranking on IDC’s Top 5 global mobile phone leaderboard. The launch of Apple’s iPhone 4S smartphone, which is now available in over 90 countries (as of mid-January), was the primary reason the company leapt over LG and ZTE in 4Q11. Device sales in the U.S. and Japan were particularly strong given extra sales days in the quarter and carrier distribution.”

Even though Apple has surpassed Samsung as the leading smartphone manufacture, it is still way behind Nokia and Samsung in the overall mobile phone sales on the volume of their low end cell phones.
