We’ve long heard about the next generation ‘iPhone 5’ to have a smaller dock connector (via iMore). iLounge also earlier reported their sources noted a smaller 16-pin dock connector. Now, TechCrunch has boldly claimed they have ‘independently verified’ the next iPhone will come with a smaller 19-pin port:
Although the form factor and actual size are still unknown, TechCrunch has independently verified that Apple is working on adding a 19-pin port, replacing the current 30-pin port, to the new iPhone. It is a move that will surely send shocks through the iPhone accessory ecosystem
Reference was made to the following image leaks seen on MobileFun and a former purported ‘hands on’ with the apparent iPhone 5 metal shell that also shows the smaller port.
What do you think? A new smaller port means the possibility for a thinner iPhone design, but at the cost of having all your third party cable and accessories to go the way of the dodo bird.

The worst thing is that there will be a mixture of old and new connector devices in my household, and need two sets of accessories to service them.

Besides the market needs a new accessory, 30 to 19 pin connection extension next direction & points all makers increased sales projections.
to be honest i am surprised they havent gone to the MAG chargers much like those on the new Macbooks and Macbook air’s
That’s a cool idea! But dock connector is not just for power, also for data. I guess having a magnet around the pins won’t play well with data transfer.
Wondering, does it make any sense for the new connector to be based on Thunderbolt? It can supply 10W vs USB2’s 5W, and speed that’s finally acceptable for transferring large files like 1080p recordings. It recently took 7 minutes to download 800MB of recorded video from my iPhone, that’s ridiculously slow for a USB2 connection.
The 10W TB power means iPad can be charged from the TB-equipped computer again instead of the custom 10W USB charger.
TB-USB adapters apparently aren’t a problem so even computers without TB can use it, though they obviously can’t supply the higher power.

The rumoured small ‘size’ of port does resemble Thunderbolt, and the added wattage to charge the iPad again would be nice to have.
My guess would be that apple has decided to make a new direction since introducing wifi syncing. Magsafe connector is genius and I’m guessing they have re-engineered the 19pins to be just as efficient as 30pins. Im putting money on that apple will sell a adapter that will allow older 30pin accessories to work with the new dock connector on the iPhone 5.

Apple is famous for jettisoning obsolete accessories, ports, etc. regardless of the built-up eco-systems.
A 30 pin port stopped making practical sense long time ago.
