Apple’s Map Application Now Shows Canada Traffic And Road Closures [iOS 6]

As we learned a few months ago, Apple has discontinued Google Maps on iOS 6 and will instead use an in-house mapping system. Apple had brought features such as turn-by-turn navigation, traffic, and flyover to iOS. These are highly anticipated features that Google Maps lacked on Apple’s mobile operating system.

In Canada, iOS 6 maps previously failed to show traffic, construction, and road closures, affirms tipster Jonathan Anderson via Twitter. As of today, red lines indicate irritations on the road. A simple tap on the red line will even provide specific information on closures, construction, and traffic time (when available) .

I can’t recall noticing road notifications when taking iOS 6 maps for a test-drive in the past, so we are assuming the function has recently been activated.

When iOS 6 is released, or for those currently with the beta version installed, you can enable traffic by swiping the right-bottom corner upwards and tapping “show traffic.”

Let us know in the comments if you’ve seen traffic data in Canada prior to this past week.

Does anyone know if this feature will work on the iPhone 4?

I don’t see any reason why it would not work for the iphone 4.

Apple will always find a silly reason to not include a feature on a device that has the capability to support it

I know flyover doesn’t work on the iPhone 4, but traffic should. Where you live will depend on the updates. If you live near a large city, the more likely you will see road closings/traffic details posted.

We know navigation won’t work on the iPhone 4: https://www.iphoneincanada.ca/iphone-news/what-ios-6-features-will-work-with-your-iphone-or-ipad-chart/

It seems like these warnings and traffic is part of navigation…if tied to it…we might not see it. But I would be surprised if it wasn’t included. Apple wants us to buy the new iPhone or the 4S to get it.

It may have been, but we need to make everyone aware the feature now works.

Then why misinform people by saying “As of today, red lines indicate irritations on the road”? This is simply untrue.

We receive information from sources and the day we posted this is the day we were made aware of the update. And the statement is true Jason. “As of today” can account for the day of, or times prior.

This came out in beta 4 a few weeks ago. This is not new.

Not necessarily, map data can be updated in Apple’s backend.

You should take traffic off the list of things that google maps didn’t have, because I have definitely been using the traffic feature on google maps for years. Works great so I really hope apple maps has accurate traffic too

This has been available for weeks now if not since the previous beta and works at least on the iPhone 4 or newer as far as I know but I imagine it would show up in all of Apple’s maps (I have an iPhone 4). It not only displays road closures and traffic but also where road work/construction is taking place.
