We have excellent news for Fido users, we have just received word that the LTE network has launched in and around the surrounding areas of Vancouver, Calgary, Toronto, Ottawa, Montréal and St. Johns.
During late July Fido announced those markets would first receive LTE coverage, then expanding furthermore into Moncton, Trois-Rivières, Sherbrooke, Québec City, Kingston, Ajax, Pickering, Oshawa, Oakville, Burlington, Hamilton, St. Catharines, Niagara, Windsor, Cambridge, Kitchener, Waterloo, Guelph, London, Barrie, Sudbury, Saskatoon, Regina, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Kelowna, Abbotsford and Victoria.
Currently Fido only has one device listed with 4G support, which happens to be a 4G hotspot device that allows up to 10 Wi-Fi connections. We will remind you though that the next-generation iPhone is expected to have LTE radio, and the New iPad is carrier unlocked.
Steven Sarfin, senior director of marketing, has information on the pricing:
“Our focus at Fido has always been on providing the best value to our customers. With data plans starting from $10/month, affordable LTE service is a perfect complement to the exclusive FidoADVANTAGE programs like FidoTRADE™, Fido LiveANSWERS™ and FidoDOLLARS™ our customers already enjoy.”

I have Fido and an iPhone 4, does this mean I will be getting LTE, or is this only for newer devices?
Unfortunately, you will not be getting LTE support because the iPhone 4 does not support it. However, anyone getting the iPhone 5 have increased chances of using Fido’s LTE plans as this iPhone is expected to have LTE support for sure. Also, if you have an iPad 3 (the “new” iPad), you could probably use their LTE service…
Marks correct. Only devices legible for 4G will be capable of using the service. All other devices use 3G at maximum.
I have my iPhone thru Fido, finally I won’t have to use Starbucks WiFi everywhere now!
LTE isn’t going to be free. It’s just a faster data connection technology for newer devices (which doesn’t currently include the iPhone). Unless you’re buying a new iPhone in a few months and adding a data plan, this won’t change anything for you.
I have a fido plan, and will be probably getting the iPhone 5 with Fido as well. Right now I’m on non-contract but will be getting a contract to leverage the price of the new phone. What does this mean exactly? When I get the iphone 5, I’ll have LTE coverage?
That’s what it sounds like, if the new iPhone supports LTE that is. Seems that they’re just including it with the standard data plan packages from what I can tell.
So from this announcement it sounds like LTE won’t be an upgrade surcharge, but will just be used as part of any data plan? That’s good news!

I have The 6gb data plan with fido, would I be able to convert that to LTE data when I get the next iphone(assuming it supports LTE) or would I have to pay off that data plan and get a new data plan altogether(with possibly less gb)?
Yes, but those rates “apply to a subscription to a Data plan without a Voice plan.”
I’m guessing, based on the quote from Sarfin stating that plans start at $10/month, that it’s just part of any data plan, meaning if you’re paying $10/month for a data add-on to your voice plan (the lowest-price data add-on that Fido offers), that will now include LTE as well. I’m hoping it also works for people like me that have the 6GB for $30/month plan.

Come to think of it, Rogers’ “upgraded” their iPad data plan to LTE with no modifications if I’m correct (would need verification on this)
I think that’s wishful thinking my friend 🙂 Carriers are evil. They’ll find a way to charge more for LTE.
