SaskTel Expands 5G to 160+ Rural and Indigenous Sites Across Saskatchewan

SaskTel on Wednesday said it has extended its 5G network to Air Ronge, Wilkie, and Thunderchild First Nation, along with more than 160 additional cell sites across rural communities, Indigenous lands, and highway corridors throughout the province.

The company has been quietly building out its rural footprint for several months. Its 5G network now covers nearly 90% of Saskatchewan’s population across more than 900 cell sites, which is a long way from where things stood when the network first launched in 2021.

SaskTel President and CEO Charlene Gavel said the goal is straightforward. “At SaskTel, we believe that geography should never be a barrier to opportunity,” she told iPhone in Canada. “By extending our 5G network to more communities and highway corridors, we’re not just enhancing coverage, we’re enabling innovation, economic growth, and a better quality of life for the people who call these regions home.”

Jeremy Harrison, the minister responsible for SaskTel, pointed to practical applications for rural residents. “From remote healthcare and online learning to smart farming and advanced transportation, 5G is unlocking new possibilities for our rural communities,” he said. “This isn’t just about faster speeds — it’s about delivering for the people of our province.”

Current speeds top out at 1.2 Gigabits per second, with faster performance expected as the network matures. Customers need a 5G-capable device, a compatible plan, and to be within a covered area to connect.
