The iPhone 4S Was Outsold By The Samsung Galaxy S3 In August [Analyst]

When the iPhone 4S was released in October of 2011, the phone was thereafter ranked the best selling smartphone month-after-month. Ten months later, Apple’s phone may have been outsold by Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S3 smartphone. In the month of August, the Galaxy S3 ranked higher than the iPhone in two-of-three U.S. based carriers.

American carriers, Verizon and Sprint sold more of these Samsung devices than the raved iPhone. As a reminder, with August, many were well aware that Apple would soon refresh the iPhone. Apple even started sending out invitations for the September 12th event today.

With that said, Apple shouldn’t be worried, that is unless they see similar results in October. Here is what the analyst had to say:

We believe this is the first month since the iPhone 4S launched in October 2011 that it was not the top selling smartphone in the U.S. market.

However, our checks indicated strong consumer interest and likely demand for the iPhone 5, and we believe Apple will return to strong number one smartphone share in the U.S. post the iPhone 5 launch.

The statistics aren’t particularly fair for Apple either. The Galaxy S3 was just refreshed in July of 2012, while the iPhone 4S is at the end of its cycle.

Even know this is based off of U.S. carriers, I still found the statistic very interesting. We will have to wait and see if Canadian carriers had similar results.
