Apple Displays Stretched iOS Icons Outside Yerba Buena Center Possibly Hinting At Taller iPhone 5 [PHOTOS]

For the past couple of days, Apple has been prepping for the big media event on September 12, where it is widely expected to unveil the next generation iPhone, hanging all those colourful banners with a big Apple logo outside the Yerba Buena Center of Arts. As Apple has now finished decorating the venue’s front, one keen eyed forum reader at MacRumors has identified that the banners show stretched versions of iOS icons, possibly hinting at a taller iPhone 5.

The forum reader points out that once can see stretched versions of iOS icons including Game Center, iTunes, Music, Safari and App Store in the image and provides an example image.

“After taking the above image and skewing it and shrinking it, we’ve verified his findings. Several icons are clearly recognizable in their un-stretched form”.

Pretty impressive observation don’t you think?

I saw it too, based on the purple, clearly iTunes icon. But defiantly good eye. Are any of the unknown ones passbook? I’ve never seen the icon.

I’m guessing the blank one is the new maps icon.

I think the “secret” icon is Safari but Apple distorted it

You know, I admit to following all the rumors and speculation about the iPhone 5 religiously, BUT, I am now thinking we are in for a surprise. I think apple has pulled one over on the world. The bad screen size, the poor headphone jack placement, changing the charging port… It doesn’t add up. I think it’s going to be a total surprise.

It would certainly be exciting and I hope it’s true, but highly doubt it. Despite Tim Cook’s comments on doubling down on secrecy I think the reality is that with their rising popularity it’s getting hard for Apple to build millions of iPhones with parts from a variety of countries without anyone leaking information. Especially when the demand for such info is so high

Yep. With so many suppliers…it’s impossible to stop all leaks.

I still think that there will be one big surprise that we haven’t heard of so far… Could it be in the OS rather than in the phone? Maybe.

But there will be one big “wow”…

Apple can contain iOS leaks much better than hardware leaks, which are out of their hands. So, if anything, a new major breakthrough could come in iOS, via a new native app or feature.

I’ll bet you $50 the phone turns out just as we’ve seen in the leaks.

I’ll call your $50 and raise it by $100 that you’re right.

Haha. If you gave me odds I’d take you up on it. I’m only going on a hunch. You have pretty compelling evidence to the contrary…

The bigger the iphone gets, the harder it is for them to control the leaks. The first one was easy since they announced it in January and released it in June. It hadn’t entered production. Now they’re looking to sell more than 10 times as many units and have the phone available a week or two after its announced. This means that it has to go into production well before the announcement. The exponential increases in volume also mean that Apple’s manufacturers have way more employees moved onto these projects, creating way more opportunity for something to make it to the wild before show time. With all the hype that precedes these things, leaking an iphone is probably a pretty lucrative venture for a Foxconn employee. It doesn’t surprise me that these leaks are occurring. I’d also surmise that Tim Cook is a bit more tolerant of it than Steve Jobs.

It’ll be what it’ll be. We’ll know in three days.

For the blank one I think it’s the app store icon … Ignore the green (as the first iTunes has the same for some reason) and focus on the lower half of it and the blue and white look like the app store … In my opinion.

I don’t know about the Stocks icon, there is some red on the bottom which isn’t in the stocks.
It is at the centre of the icons so it could be something special in addition to the one on the right that is unidentified.

Can’t wait! Only 3 more days

All this speculation about what icon is what… I don’t think it means anything, I think a designer was looking for a good texture with a fitting color palette and made the brilliant decision to make a collage from a bunch of iOS icons and blur and stretch them. I don’t think each color band is necessarily one icon, there are definitely some you can pick out but I think there are a bunch mixed together throughout the design.
