Apple Lightning to 30-pin Adapter Review Hits the Web

iLounge has received their Lightning to 30-pin adapter and has posted an early hands-on review of the accessory, which retails for $35 in Canada ($29 USD). Their initial tests have revealed the adapter works with their old speakers for audio and power and also the transmission of data over cables, plus it is strong enough to support the new iPhone and iPod models in docks.

However, video output is clearly labeled on the package that it is not supported and iLounge was able to verify this:

However, the video limitation is equally real: we have been unable to get the iPhone 5 to perform video either through Apple’s own Component AV Cables, or through docking video accessories such as Epson’s formerly iPod/iPhone-compatible protectors. Additionally, it’s worth noting that this Adapter is not compatible with the vast majority of iPhone 5 cases we’ve seen so far; Speck’s CandyShell Flip is a notable exception.

You can check out the rest of their Lightning to 30-pin adapter overview here.

Initially, during iPhone 5 pre-orders there was confusion as checkout pages noted the adapter was included, but this turned out to be false. Has your adapter shipped yet?

The no video option pretty much kills the iPhone 5 and most likely the new iPad mini and new Touch as a presentation tool until Apple releases HDMI Lightning adapter. I am really surprised they didn’t have this at launch.

Apple TV would make a great presentation hub for all their devices if it dealt with Corporate level wireless security. Unfortunately it doesn’t yet so I’ll keep running my Keynotes off my MacBook Air. At least the Keynote Remote app works on pretty much any level of WiFi security.

My company bought an Airport Express to get around that issue. We set the AE up with a private WiFi network with no internet signal. Set the ATV to the WiFi signal, plug in both little boxes and BAM, you got AirPlay. You also of course also need an HDMI to VGA converter box for most projector setups, but we’ve had lots of “wow” comments when we present wirelessly to our clients!

The damned thing should have been included. I don’t mind paying extra for Apple’s premium products but this is nothing more than gouging. The fact that I’ll probably have to buy three of them to have all my previous charging locations with their own adapter is even more of an insult to this long standing Apple customer. Not your finest hour, Apple.

Agreed, if you’re going to switch something for the entire product line, you should include an adapter. The whole thing was poorly handled- I can’t even find extra cables.

And when you do, you’ll have to drop a chunk of change to get all your old charging options back. Sad.

Not to mention why does Canada always get the royal shaft in paying more especially when our dollar is on par if not worth MORE than the damn greenback?

Mine says preparing for shipping on Apple Store website, and really hoping it’ll work with my car’s stereo. It’s literally the last year and last model by that manufacturer to not support at all AVRCP (which allows you to view currently playing song or play/pause/skip over Bluetooth).

I wonder if it will work with the old accessories that used the firewire pins for charging. Remember the “This accessory does not support charging”…

Will this not work?

Sure it will. The issue, for me, isn’t about video streaming, but about having to buy three or four adapters or new cables to have the same charging options I used to have. Having only one cable right now is a real PITA.

They made such an expensive adapter and didn’t bother to allow for a bit of clearance to accomodate phone cases? =/
