WhatsApp Processed a Record 18 Billion Messages on New Year’s Eve

Cross platform messaging giant WhatsApp has announced on Twitter it reached a new milestone for total messages processed in one day: 18 billion. Those messages were sent on New Year’s Eve and totalled 7 billion messages inbound and 11 billion messages outbound. The discrepancy between inbound and outbound messages is due to the nature of group chats.

Back in November of 2011, WhatsApp surpassed 1 billion messages sent in a single day. As of this August, it was handling 10 billion messages per day. The popular app was even rumoured to be acquired by Facebook, but that was quickly shot down.

Just before Christmas (and the iTunes Connect holiday shut down), WhatsApp was discounted to a free download again (it’s still free!). The sky’s the limit for the growth of WhatsApp, which is still one of our favourite apps of all time.

Click here to download WhatsApp, it’s currently free but will quickly return to $0.99. Did you help pad those New Year’s Eve messaging numbers for WhatsApp?

I was one of them! The group chat feature is the best for keeping in contact with my closest friends.
