Amazon To Release A Smartphone With 4.7″ Display This Year? [DigiTimes]

Last week, we heard rumours of Amazon working on a $99 version of its 7-inch Kindle Fire HD tablet and now, DigiTimes is reporting through its industry supply chain sources that the company is going to use a 4.7″ display for its smartphone, which is expected to be released later this year. The publication also claims that Amazon originally planned a 4.3″ display, but recent trends in the industry have led it to choose a larger, 4.7-inch screen.

According to the Taiwanese publication, who is known for its spotty track record on rumors of upcoming products, Amazon is looking at a second-quarter release date for the device. However, since the production progress at its manufacturing partner, Foxconn, has not been as smooth as expected, it may not be able to release the smartphone on schedule.

“Amazon has also reportedly been working on enhancing other specifications of the smartphone. However, the sources did not reveal if Amazon’s recent changes to the device were the reason for rumors in the market stating that mass production of the device may be delayed until later in the second quarter of the year or possibly later”.

Will the rumored Amazon phone be able to compete with high end smartphones like the iPhone, or will be it simply be targeted to compete with low-end Android smartphone makers?
