MasterCard Launches MasterPass Digital Wallet in Canada

Back in late February, MasterCard announced their new digital wallet would be launching by the end of March. The timeframe was a bit delayed but today the company announced the launch of their much anticipated digital wallet, MasterPass. Canada will be the first country to use MasterPass in North America.

The company says at launch Porter Airlines, WagJag, Jaunt.ca and Grocery Gateway have MasterPass-ready checkout services ready on their websites, with plans to expand to over 800 merchants by the end of this year and 2,800 by next year.

Essentially MasterPass acts as a secure repository to store your credit card info when making purchases online on your computer, tablet or smartphone, saving you time by not having to re-enter payment details over and over:

“Canadians are early adopters when it comes to digital payments and embracing new technologies; that’s why Canada is the first market in North America where we’re launching MasterPass,” said Jason Davies, Vice President of eCommerce at MasterCard Canada. “With eCommerce growing by double digits, more and more Canadians want a secure, seamless and simple payment experience.  MasterPass delivers this to consumers no matter if they are shopping on their laptops, tablets or mobile phones.”

MasterPass will enable users to connect up to 25 MasterCard and other branded credit, prepaid or branded debit cards (excluding Interac), and up to 25 shipping addresses. Two-step verification security will be included via a unique security code being delivered by text message.

Let us know if you are going to sign up for MasterPass. It looks to be a promising digital payment solution, but as of now more merchants need to jump on board for it to be successful.

MasterCard is a much more trusted brand to the regular consumer compared to ‘PayPal’.

So doesn’t work unless you have cell phone with you. How about SMS spoofing – will this be open to phishing texts?
