Apple TV to Get Revamped Software Update Next Week, Not Hardware
AllThingsD reports at Apple’s iPhone event next week, the company will introduce an updated version of software for the Apple TV, and not new hardware as speculated in a previous report from a couple days ago:
Despite speculation about new Apple TV hardware on the way, Apple won’t be unveiling any new boxes next week, according to people familiar with the company’s plans.
That said, the company will be tweaking the software inside its Web TV box. Apple has already said that it will be bringing its new iTunes Radio service to Apple TV. And it has been adding new content partners, including Disney and HBO, throughout the summer.
Sources say new features will allow users to play purchased content on someone else’s Apple TV via AirPlay. Previously, users had to sign into their accounts within Apple TV to watch purchased content. These new permissions will allow users to stream a movie or TV show they own at a friend’s house.
Apple has been expanding the range of apps on their TV “hobby”, recently adding a dedicated VEVO channel for music videos, while users in the USA have also had expanded channels as well.
